1 The Alice Wain Memorial West Norway Eclogite Field Symposium 2003 June 21 st 28 th, 2003, Selje, western Norway SECOND CIRCULAR: CALL FOR PAPERS AND REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS AND REGISTRATION/PAYMENT : FEBRUARY 15, 2003 OVERVIEW A lecture and field symposium on the dynamic processes of high- and ultrahigh pressure metamorphism and exhumation of eclogites and associated rock types will be held in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway, in June The symposium will be held in the period 21 st -28 th June 2003, based in the Selje Hotel at Selje on Stadlandet, western Norway, within walking distance of the first documented Norwegian UHP eclogite occurrence at Gryttingvåg. The Symposium commemorates the outstanding contributions to west Norway eclogite research by the late Dr. Alice Wain, whose life was tragically ended by a fatal field vehicle accident in Scotland early in This symposium is being held under the auspices of the Task Group for ILP Project III-8 on Processes and Geodynamics in the Formation and Exhumation of Ultra-High Pressure Metamorphic Terranes and the International Eclogite Conference Committee. The organising committee for the symposium is headed by Prof. Tony Carswell (Sheffield University) with logistical support from the Geological Survey of Norway in Trondheim. MAIN SYMPOSIUM THEMES The main symposium themes cover micro- through macro-scale processes and include topics of mineralogy, geochemistry, microstructures, geochronology, field relationships and exhumation mechanisms, and kinetic and thermodynamic considerations of HP-UHPM rocks. The mineral resource potential and economic use of eclogites and associated rock types will be an applied theme also addressed in the symposium. SYMPOSIUM PROGRAMME AND CALL FOR PAPERS The conference will have a combined programme of lectures/posters at the conference hotel facility and field trips to local HP-UHPM localities. Pre- and postsymposium excursions are also planned. Andersen and Håkon Austrheim Four days; limit ca. 24 persons Starts: Bergen (vans at the Realfagbygget at the University of Bergen, 0900, 18 th June); Ends: Selje on conference registration day (21 st June) Themes: the Bergen Arcs and Sunnfjord eclogites and the extensional structures of the Kvamshesten and Hornelen Detachments; Excursion vans return to Bergen/Bergen airport on 28 st June, after Selje conference concludes Day 1: Wednesday, June 18th, From Bergen centre via Holsnøy to Brekkestrand (overnight Brekkestrand). Day 2: Thursday, June 19th, From Brekkestrand via Hyllestad-Drøsdal to Askvoll (overnight Askvoll). Day 3: Friday, June 20th, From Askvoll via Atløy, Førdefjorden, to Florø (overnight Florø). Day 4: Saturday, June 21st, From Flørø via Hornelen Basin and Bremanger to Selje. (Registration and overnight Selje). B) Optional post-symposium fieldtrip, 28 th June 3 rd July Nordøyane Otrøya HP and UHP Eclogites, Majoritic Garnet Peridotites Leaders: Peter Robinson, Mike Terry, Tony Carswell, Herman van Roermund 5 excursion days + 6 th final transport day; limit c. 25 persons Starts: Selje (vans at Selje conference, 0900 June 28); Ends: Lepsøya, morning July 3 with further transport to Ålesund (airport), Molde (airport), or Trondheim (airport) Themes: Tectono-stratigraphic - structural - metamorphic setting for formation and exhumation of eclogites and garnet peridotites. Group will stay five nights at the scenic and central-island-located Lepsøya Misjonsenter (discrete alcohol use allowed), traveling by ferry and van each day. Excursion vans travel Trondheim to Selje Sat. June 21, back to Trondheim Wed. July 3. Day 1: Saturday, June 28 - Selje (0900) to Lepsøya: Fiskå anorthosite, Dragsund sillimanite gneiss, Ulsteinvik coesite eclogite. Days 2-5 will be flexible depending on weather conditions. Day 2: Sunday, June 29 -Brattvåg region: Risberget, Saetra, Blåhø, Støren Nappes of Moldefjord syncline, basement and Saetra eclogites, nappe thinning, sinistral shear, mylonites, extreme strain partitioning. Day 3: Monday, June 30 -Haramsøya-Flemsøya: Eclogite-facies shearing and recrystallization of Haram and Flem Gabbros, Sandvik garnet peridotite, Nogva UHP kyanite eclogite, Ullaholmen tubular folds, Åkre mylonite. Day 4: Tuesday, July 1 - Brattvåg Otrøya: Deformation histories and associations of garnetiferous peridotites and pyroxenites, including occurrences of exsolved megacrystic orthopyroxenes and majoritic garnets.

4 Day 5: Wednesday, July 2 -Brattvåg--Fjørtoft: UHP kyanite eclogite w. quartz after coesite, microdiamond-bearing kyanite-garnet gneiss, kyanite-gneiss mylonite, eclogite-facies fabrics, monazite geochronology. Day 6: Thursday, July 3 - Lepsøya to Trondheim. Ålesund airport from Lepsøya via fast boat early AM. Molde airport by van early afternoon. Trondheim airport evening by van Depending on route and weather: eclogite on Averøya, tectonostratigraphy on Midsund, fjord scenery Sunndalsøra, early Ordovician Løkken stratified sulfide ores and pillow lavas. FEES 1) Symposium fee*: 7250 Norwegian crowns *Symposium fees include hotel accommodation and meals (seven breakfasts, seven dinners, six lunches, starting with dinner on the evening of the 21 st, through the morning of 28 th June); transport for local symposium field trips (22 nd -27 th June); registration/conference abstract volume. This will take the participants literally to within a couple of hundred metres of the hotel. Travel information can be found at (general travel information for western Norway); (express bus companies). Further practical information regarding travel, accommodation and conference program will be sent to all meeting participants after the registration is completed in February.

5 REGISTRATION Please send your registration either by telefax, regular post or to the contact information listed on the bottom of the form. Payment information is also included on the form. Symposium fees and optional excursion fees must be arranged at the time of registration (deadline February 15, 2003). Withdrawal from the conference with full refund of registration fees must occur on or before May 1, Fees will not be refunded after this date. We note that the total number of lecture slots will be limited at this Symposium, and it is likely that many delegates will be offered a poster slot in which to present their research findings.
