2 Title These days, getting into learning needn t mean sitting in a classroom - you could learn at your local library or a community centre, through volunteering or using a computer. Many courses are aimed at complete beginners and have no entry requirements - other than a willingness to learn. This booklet gives you information about what help and support is available from different agencies and organisations in Kirklees. Why Learn? Work Everyone gets stuck sometimes in a job they don t like. Whether you want a complete change of direction, or are ambitious to move on to the next level, there are hundreds of options for you. If you are unemployed, you may be entitled to course fee discount. You can get help to write a new CV and boost your confidence. Health & Friendship Life isn t about being stuck in the house. Make friends whilst learning something new at the same time. Whether you want to stay healthy in body or in mind, there is something for you. Why not try volunteering, get the skills you want and the satisfaction from helping people to succeed. Keep your mind and body active, whatever your age. Family Helping your son or daughter with their homework can be a fantastic incentive to learn. Help them get better grades by gaining the qualifications yourself. There are also many opportunities to learn with your family. Skills You may have heard a lot of Government talk about the importance of skills. In the current economic climate, skills for work are crucial strings to your bow. Competition for jobs is stronger than ever, so make sure you have the skills to succeed. Skills also stretch way beyond the workplace. If you have always wanted to know how to use your digital camera or shop on the internet, enrol on a course now. Introduction 2 3
