Finland has been a member of the European Union since The capital of the state is Helsinki. Close to 1 million people live in the capital region. Finland is known as the country of thousands of lakes and it has the largest archipelago in Europe. A sauna is a sacred place for the nation. Finns are all proud of the wide range of well-known national athletes and figures such as Santa Claus. In addition, Finland is also renowned for its toprated education system, technological knowhow such as the mobile manufacturer Nokia and international design brands such as Marimekko. 2

4 KYMENLAAKSO Kymenlaakso is a dynamic region in Southeast Finland offering a variety of services for commerce and trade, as well as expertise in forest and logistics industries. Located on the border between the EU and Russia, it provides a bridge between east and west. The province has a population of 183,000. 5 Kotka Kotka, a city by the sea, has 55,000 inhabitants and is known for its port, industry, and maritime festivals. Further, Kotka offers a wide range of educational and cultural services. The economic structure is based on public services, industry, trade, transport and logistics. The port of Kotka is the leading export port in Finland. The city is also known for its beautiful outdoor areas such as Sapokka Water Garden. Kouvola Kouvola is a diverse region with a population of 90,000. In Kouvola, the urban and the rural live side-by-side. The city is best known for its focal logistic location and global forest industry while wilderness areas, such as the Repovesi National Park, invite visitors to enjoy peaceful nature. In addition, the city offers a lively variety of culture and sports attractions. 5
6 KYMENLAAKSO University of Applied Sciences Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (KyUAS) offers multidisciplinary higher education in Kotka and Kouvola as well as in the capital region. The fields of study are: Technology, Communication and Transport Social sciences, Business and Administration Culture Social services, Health and Sport KyUAS has about 4,400 students, of which 3,500 in youth education and 900 in adult education. KyUAS has about 400 full-time employees. The profile of KyUAS is based on the promotion of socially, ecologically and technologically sustainable and safe development, innovation processes and expertise on Russia. The aim is to advance the prosperity of the province through high-quality education and services in collaboration with industry, economic life and educational and research organizations. 6
7 KyUAS graduates do well in job market KyUAS s vision for 2015 The national level comparisons of graduate employment rates show that the employment rate of KyUAS graduates is above the national average. Approximately 60 % of KyUAS graduates work in Kymenlaakso, and approximately 20 % work in the capital region. 11 DEGREES Bachelor s degrees qualify students for professional expert careers. Master s degrees from universities of applied sciences are compatible to other higher university degrees in terms of qualifying for public offices. The requirements of the working life are emphasized in the studies for both degrees. KyUAS strategic functions are based on the integration of education, RDI and services. 12 APPLYING for degree programmes Students apply for degree programmes through the national joint application system. The joint application process takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn. The joint application processes are arranged for youth education, adult education and programmes taught in English. However, applications for Master s level programmes taught in English are submitted directly to KyUAS. 16 INTERNATIONAL Affairs Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences is part of an international network of more than 100 partners which include educational institutions in nearly 30 countries. Each year approximately 15 % of KyUAS students take part in foreign exchange programmes, and a growing number of foreign students is received by KyUAS. in International Business Management are all available in Kouvola. The Industrial Management and Logistics programme is available in Kotka. Many degree programmes include courses taught also in German or Russian. International affairs are based on mutual agreements concerning studies and teaching abroad in higher education institutions and practical training abroad. Students can take part in foreign exchange programmes or independently arrange studies abroad in a higher education institution approved by KyUAS. In addition, KyUAS provides a wide range of courses and integral degree education taught in English. 17 TRAINING Services Training Services serve the community by providing diverse additional and continuing education services, specialisation studies, open UAS studies and education based on external funding. The services include planning and organizing training, events and seminars in addition to a wide range of consulting services. Training Services include Career and Recruitment Services which assist students in finding jobs, practical work placements and ideas for thesis study. In addition, Recruitment Services help KyUAS partners to find competent people to carry out various assignments and projects. Recruitment Services arrange career and recruitment events, organize company visits and recruitment events in co-operation with employers. 17
18 Research, Development & Innovation ACTIVITIES The RDI activities provide multidisciplinary services for the business life of Kymenlaakso. RDI activities at Kymenlaakso UAS are carried out in the RDI centres of each faculty: KymiDesign&Business: The International Business and Culture faculty KymiCare: The Social and Health Care faculty KymiTechnology: The Technology and Transport faculty The RDI projects are carried out by students in innovative open learning environments together with KyUAS s RDI personnel, teachers and the representatives of industrial and economic life. In addition, the RDI activities also offer an opportunity for students to work for companies during their studies. This supports students professional growth and helps other professionals to keep their own expertise up to date. 18
19 LIBRARY and Information Services Library and Information Services are provided by faculty libraries located on the campuses. The services are available to KyUAS students and personnel as well as other customers. The library provides a variety of up-to-date printed and electronic information including electronic books, magazines and databases. All electronic material is organized in an electronic library. The material is accessible on KyUAS computers connected to the web. The library s own collection database and the collection databases of other Finnish libraries can be browsed freely on the Internet. The Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka offers scientific archiving and library services provided by four organizations: the KyUAS, the Maritime Museum of Finland, the Museum of Kymenlaakso and the University of Helsinki. Vellamo s services include the Museum of Kymenlaakso the Maritime Museum of Finland the Information Centre Vellamo. The Information Centre Vellamo is an open-for-all learning and research centre which offers a collection of materials from nearly all scientific fields. 19
