Quick Start Information The Zip 100MB, 250MB, and 750MB ATAPI drive can be installed either as a standard removable drive (D: or higher) or as a bootable Drive A: drive. Install as a Standard Removable Drive 1. Verify that the host computer meets the system requirements listed on page 5. Pay particular attention to the recommendation that the BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive be disabled in the CMOS setup. 2. Install IomegaWare software. NOTE: While the Zip ATAPI drive is designed to perform basic functions using the operating system provided by your computer s manufacturer, however, many of the most helpful features of the drive are available only when IomegaWare software is installed. See Software Installation on page Install the Zip ATAPI drive. The Zip ATAPI drive s default jumper setting is Slave. Change this if necessary, see Jumper Settings on page 6. Iomega recommends connecting the Zip ATAPI drive to the secondary IDE channel. Do not connect it to the same IDE channel as the hard drive. Install as a Bootable Drive A 1. Verify that the host computer meets the system requirements listed on page 5. Pay particular attention to the Zip ATAPI drive model number and BIOS support requirements. Only certain BIOS versions will support the Drive A: mode. You will need to change the jumper settings to reflect Drive A: mode; see Jumper Settings on page 6. 4
Zip ATAPI Drive as Standard Removable Drive System Requirements Pentium 200MHz or higher IBM-compatible computer Empty drive bay with front panel access Embedded IDE interface or IDE controller card Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 through 9.x, Mac OS X verision 10.1 or higher (check with Iomega for latest operating system support) BIOS Support Iomega recommends that BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive be disabled in the CMOS setup. On some systems with auto detection, it will be necessary to specifically turn off auto detection for the Zip ATAPI drive. Refer to the computer s documentation if you need more information. Zip ATAPI Drive as Drive A: Pentium 200MHz or higher IBM-compatible computer Zip 100MB ATAPI drive model ATAPI2 or ATAPI3 (drive model listed on drive label), Zip 250 ATAPI drive or Zip 750MB ATAPI drive Empty drive bay with front panel access Embedded IDE interface or IDE controller card Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP BIOS Support The host computer s BIOS must support the Zip ATAPI drive as a bootable device and must be able to assign the drive letter A: to the drive. Current BIOS that support the Zip ATAPI Drive A: mode include: Phoenix 6 release 4 core with boot option AMI 6.30 core with ATAPI bootability Award 4.51PG core with ATAPI bootability 5
Installation Notes Jumper Settings Configure the jumper settings on the Zip ATAPI drive as needed for the system. Jumper block Settings when installing as standard drive: Slave (Drive 1) (Factory Setting) Master (Drive 0) Cable Select IDE Channels Iomega suggests that you connect the Zip ATAPI drive to the secondary IDE channel. Do not connect it to the same IDE channel as the hard drive. Pin 1 Orientation Make sure PIN 1 on the cable connects to PIN 1 on the Zip ATAPI drive. All IDE interface cable connections must maintain correct PIN 1 orientation in order for the drive to be recognized by the system. Mounting Screws Mounting screws must not extend into the Zip ATAPI drive farther than 4.0 mm (about 0.16 inch). Mounting screws that are too long could damage the drive. Software Installation While the Zip ATAPI drive is designed to perform basic functions using the operating system provided by your computer s manufacturer, many of the most helpful features of the drive are available only when IomegaWare software is installed. IomegaWare for the end-user is included in the integrator packet. 6
Installation Notes Using 750MB, 250MB and 100MB Zip Drives and Disks Together 100 Zip Drives Zip Disks Read Only Read and Write, Short Format Read and Write, Long Format Not Compatible Zip 100MB ATAPI drive: Allows you to read and write to 100MB Zip disks only. Zip 250MB ATAPI drive: Features backward compatibility that allows you to read and write to 250MB and 100MB Zip disks. Performance when writing to a 100MB Zip disk is significantly reduced, because of the higher capacity of the Zip 250MB ATAPI drive. To maximize the performance of your Zip 250MB ATAPI drive, you should use 250MB Zip disks. Zip 750MB ATAPI drive: Features backward compatibility that allows you to read and write to 750MB and 250MB Zip disks, and read only from 100MB Zip disks. Performance when writing to a 250MB Zip disk is significantly reduced, because of the higher capacity of the Zip 750MB ATAPI drive. To maximize performance of your Zip 750MB drive, you should use 750MB Zip disks. NOTE: Zip disk capacity calculated assuming 1 MB = 1 million bytes. The capacity reported by a particular operating system may vary. 7
Technical Notes for Drive A: Mode Using Zip Disks in Drive A: Mode Zip drives emulating a floppy drive will cause some variation to the characteristics of Zip disks, but if used properly, the disks will maintain compatibility with other Zip drives. Formatting Disks in Drive A: Mode It is important that you install the current version of IomegaWare software onto the host computer. If the Zip ATAPI drive is in Drive A: mode and a disk is formatted using an old version of Iomega Tools, the newly formatted disk will be unreadable in other Zip drives. Updated versions of IomegaWare software are backwards compatible; they will support all previously released Iomega drives. Microsoft Disk Copy Utilities in Drive A: Mode Do not run Microsoft diskcopy.exe or the right mouse CopyDisk utility with the Zip ATAPI drive (or any Iomega device). These two utilities were designed for floppy drives and do not handle other removable disk drives correctly. This is documented for end-users in the Zip ATAPI User s Manual. If you encounter a problem while installing or using your Zip ATAPI drive, check the Troubleshooting section for possible solutions. CAUTION! Electrical power should be turned off before connecting or disconnecting any cables; otherwise, computer equipment could be damaged. The Zip ATAPI drive icon does not appear. Follow the steps listed below under The Zip ATAPI drive is not assigned a drive letter. 8
The green activity light on the Zip ATAPI drive does not turn on. 1. Make sure the computer is receiving power. 2. Make sure the power cable connection to the Zip ATAPI drive is secure. 3. Make sure there is a Zip disk in the Zip ATAPI drive. Troubleshooting NOTE: On the Zip 100MB ATAPI drive the green activity light will remain on. On the Zip 250MB and 750MB ATAPI drive the green activity light will flash while reading and writing, and when the drive initially receives power. The Zip ATAPI drive is not assigned a drive letter, or the IomegaWare software is unable to find the Zip ATAPI drive. 1. Make sure PIN 1 is properly connected on all IDE interface connections. The stripe on the interface cable should align with PIN 1 on each connection. If the cable does not have a keyed connector, make sure the connector has not shifted a pair of pins. 2. Make sure the jumper setting on the Zip ATAPI drive is set correctly. For example, if you installed the Zip ATAPI drive as a Slave drive, the jumper setting must reflect Slave drive. Refer to Installing Your Zip ATAPI Drive in the User s Manual on the Start Here First CD for details. 3. If there is another drive on the same IDE channel, make sure it is also properly configured. Refer to the documentation that accompanied the other IDE drive for configuration information (often this information is on the disk case). If you cannot locate the documentation, contact the manufacturer of the drive. 4. Make sure BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive is disabled in the computer's CMOS setup. NOTE: This may require turning off autodetection for the Zip ATAPI drive. Refer to your computer's documentation if you need instructions on disabling autodetection. If you are unable to disable BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive in the CMOS setup and the Zip ATAPI drive does not appear on the system, the computer may have an incompatible BIOS that does not correctly understand removable ATAPI drives. You may be able to solve the problem by obtaining an updated BIOS from the computer manufacturer. If an updated BIOS is not available, it may be possible to install the Zip ATAPI drive successfully using an add-on IDE card. 5. Make sure the software drivers for the Zip ATAPI drive are correctly installed on the computer system. The necessary drivers are included with the IomegaWare software. Carefully follow the installation instructions under Installing the Zip Drive as the Only Device on the Secondary IDE Channel in the User s Manual on the Start Here First CD. 6. If the computer's operating system is Windows 98, make sure the system is running in 32-bit mode (Protected mode). To check whether the system is running in 32-bit mode, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click the Performance tab and check that File System and Virtual Memory are listed as 32-bit. If the mode is 16-bit, refer to the Windows 95/98 documentation for instructions on improving the system performance to 32-bit. 7. Some IDE hard drives do not work properly unless they are in a certain position on the IDE cable. You may need to reverse the position of the Master drive, such as a CD-ROM, and the Zip ATAPI (Slave) drive on the cable for the drives to work properly. 9
Troubleshooting 8. If the computer still does not recognize the Zip ATAPI drive, it may be that the existing IDE Master drive does not allow access to a Slave drive on the same cable. Try installing the Zip ATAPI drive on the other IDE channel. Computer does not recognize a Slave drive connected to the same IDE connection with a Zip ATAPI Master drive. 1. Make sure PIN 1 is properly connected on all IDE interface connections. The stripe on the interface cable should align with PIN 1 on each connection. If the cable does not have a keyed connector, make sure the connector has not shifted a pair of pins. 2. Make sure the Slave drive is correctly jumpered as a Slave. Refer to the documentation that accompanied the Slave drive for configuration information (often this information is on the disk case). If you cannot locate the documentation, contact the manufacturer of the drive. 3. Some IDE hard drives do not work properly unless they are in a certain position on the IDE cable. You may need to reverse the position of the Slave drive and the ATAPI (Master) drive on the cable for the Slave drive to work properly. Computer fails to boot correctly or hangs while booting after the Zip ATAPI drive is installed. Make sure BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive is disabled in the computer's CMOS setup. NOTE: This may require turning off autodetection for the Zip ATAPI drive. Refer to your computer's documentation if you need instructions on getting into the CMOS setup and disabling autodetection. If you are unable to disable BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive in the CMOS setup and the computer hangs during boot-up, the computer may have an incompatible BIOS that does not correctly understand removable internal drives. You may be able to solve the problem by obtaining an updated BIOS from the computer manufacturer. If an updated BIOS is not available, it may be possible to install the Zip ATAPI drive successfully using an add-on IDE card. My Zip disk works on my Mac but not on my PC. PC systems cannot read a Mac-formatted Zip disk unless special software is installed on the system. If you try to use a Mac-formatted Zip disk on a PC that does not have disk exchange software installed, you will see a message indicating that the disk is not formatted. Zip ATAPI drive performance seems slow. If you are using 100MB disks in a Zip 250MB ATAPI drive, drive performance will be reduced when writing files to the disk, see Using 750MB, 250MB and 100MB Zip Drives and Disks Together, see page 7. If you are using 250MB disks in a Zip 750MB ATAPI drive, drive performance will be reduced when writing files to the disk, see Using 750MB, 250MB and 100MB Zip Drives and Disks Together, see page 7. 10
Troubleshooting My system appears to hang when using Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP. If the system appears to hang when writing a large file to a Zip disk, you can verify that the Zip ATAPI drive is operating correctly by checking that the green power light is on or flashing. It is normal for the drive to continue to write data after Windows reports the copy is complete. When the green activity light is no longer on or flashing, the file writing process is complete and your system will be available again. You want to change the drive letter assigned to your Zip ATAPI drive. Drive letter assignments are controlled by the operating system in order to change a drive letter assignment, you must work with the procedures required by your computer's operating system. Windows 98/98SE/Me Users: If your computer is running Windows 98/98SE/Me, you can change drive letters as desired for any of your removable drives (including your Zip ATAPI drive and CD-ROM drive) by using Drive Letter Manager in IomegaWare software. The instructions are as follows: 1. Right click on the Zip ATAPI drive icon in My Computer or Windows Explorer. 2. Select Properties. 3. Click the tab for Drive Letter Manager. 4. Drive Letter Manager will display the current drive letters assigned on your system. 5. To change the drive letter for any removable drive, click the drop-down arrow next to the current drive letter and select the drive letter you want to use. The drive letters you choose will be effective after you restart your system. Windows 2000/XP Users The following instructions describe how to change drive letters for removable drives under Windows 2000/XP. NOTE: You must have administrator privileges for your local computer in order to change drive letters under Windows Select Control Panels, Administrator Tools, Computer Management, then Disk Management. 2. Right click on the icon for the Zip ATAPI drive and select Change Drive Letter and Path from the shortcut menu. 3. Click the Edit button. 4. Click on Assign a drive letter and select the letter you want to use for your Zip ATAPI drive. You can't change the drive letter assigned to your Zip ATAPI drive. Make sure BIOS support for the Zip ATAPI drive is disabled in the computer's CMOS setup. NOTE: This may require turning off autodetection for the Zip ATAPI drive. Refer to the your computer's documentation if you need instructions on getting into the CMOS setup and disabling autodetection. 11
Troubleshooting Disk automatically ejected when inserted into the Zip ATAPI drive. Make sure you are using a genuine 100MB, 250MB or 750MB Zip disk. If you attempt to insert a non-zip disk into the Zip ATAPI drive, the drive will automatically reject the disk. Zip disk won't eject using Windows It is recommended that you use the Iomega software eject command to eject Iomega disks. If you are using Windows Explorer and want to eject a Zip disk, make sure that Explorer is displaying the contents of a different drive (for example, highlight drive C:). If the disk still does not eject from the Zip ATAPI drive, try closing any open applications or windows listing the disk's contents. If the disk still does not eject immediately, it may be due to the way Windows 2000 handles disk caching. Eventually, Windows 2000 should allow the disk to eject. If it does not, please refer to the help files included with Windows NTFS formatted Zip disk won't eject. The NTFS format is a fixed disk file system, which locks the disk when it is mounted under Windows This means that once you access an NTFS formatted Zip disk, the disk will no longer eject using the eject button on the front of the Zip ATAPI drive. To eject the disk, you must first close any windows listing the disk contents, then use the software eject command that is available when you right mouse click on the Zip ATAPI drive icon in My Computer or Windows Explorer. 12
