14 Initial data Initial data is basic information of the existing environment or other documents that are needed before starting the project design Initial data can be for example in pfd, dgn, dwg, doc, tif, jpg formats Representing data in computer interpretable formats All the computer applications used in the project should be able to utilize initial data Everyone in the project should have access to initial database (project bank) 15 15

24 Planning the Helsinki City Rail Loop, Experiences during General Data about present state When you collect information, do it well Wrong information can be dangerous Distribute the information to owners, authorities, other planners Underground spaces and structures are laborious to model and inspect, do it as well as possible at once XY is not enough, Z and attributes are needed also (case: cables) Planning with BIM Plan the processes well, somebody always knows the best work flow and alternatives Determine the purpose of planning first, determine the actions only then Talk about the problems, somebody always knows the solution (or wait for a while) BIM: Don t wait, but act yourself and inform other people Do sketches, but accept the idea that they are not final design models Don t use too large elements 29 29

Borehole through the roof of an underground garage, minor damage 3. Borehole through the wall of a rock tunnel, minor damage It is important to Maintain and update data about underground structures Spread the information Be open with the mistakes and damages 30 30

Emergency exit, evacuation 6. Rock mechanics 7. Ground water flow 8. Noise and vibration analysis 9. Electricity and train operation 10.(Later: lights, acoustics) State of art My understanding is that experts make their own models Architecture and engineer models support in identifying the cases and in further modeling 31 31
27 Planning the Helsinki City Rail Loop, Experiences during Examples 1. Work flows are working and they are revised when needed 2. IFC- and DWG-models are widely used 3. LandXML (Inframodel) format is used only in rail alignment 4. City of Helsinki use Microstation (dgn) successfully also with IFC and DWG 5. Don t use too large models or too large elements, because it is difficult to identify the hotspots (the right clashes) 6. Conversion of source data works fine usually but not in all cases 7. Communication within design groups as usual, collaboration server is not used 8. City of Helsinki has very strict policy with computer security, this causes delay but can be worked with 32 32
