4 Introduction Modelling and use of machine control systems have provided significant benefits Destia s goal is to utilize model based design and construction methods in the whole infra construction process 1G: models for use of machinery 2G: models for use of people (site management) 3G: models for use of automatized processes Model Based Quality assurance is one of the first steps towards automatized processes The process development and the first practical testing was done on Destia s Riippa-Eskola RU2 railroad construction project in Introduction The pilot project Riippa-Eskola Project owner: Finnish Transport Agency Design and build project Model based design and construction process 30 km of double railroad, 22 new bridges Schedule: 04/ /2016 Contract sum 85 M

5 Introduction - model based construction process Model based railroad structural design Checking and finishing models XML Production using 3D machine control Cloud-based model management and real-time production control Background Model Based Quality assurance (MBQ) Traditionally quality assurance measurements have been performed manually by surveyors measuring, processing and evaluating thousands of points need a lot of manpower (too) much (useless) paperwork delayed availability of QA results improved machine control positioning systems are accurate work quality is more accurate and homogenous The new MBQ method has developed to replace the traditional manual quality assurance by applying machine control systems to document the position accuracy of the built road structures during completion providing a transparent and real-time view of production quality control automatizing the data flow and work flow decreasing unnecessary work

7 Results MBQ was used to measure as-built quality: For excavation and earthworks of all the structural layers By more than 20 excavators By motor grader and soil compactor with MCS and GNSS positioning Grader: % of as-built measurements within ±20 mm Compactor: % of as-built measurements within ±20 mm Results Inframodel testing LandXML based file format for storing 3D-models and metadata Inframodel 3 was tested throughout the process from design to quality control SW-tools have file support and worked well with IM3 models

8 MBC & MBQ: Conclusions Finalized production models, wide use of machine control systems and skilled professionals are the basis for use of MBQ MBQ provides a real-time, transparent follow-up and control Regular machinery accuracy checks are necessary and they prevent problems and mistakes Less faults and waiting time on construction site Less resources needed than in traditional quality control GNSS positioned compaction machine was used for quality assurance Inframodel 3 format supports almost the whole model based infra construction process full implementation needed More information
