2 2 Consultation Ageing in Europe Words of Welcome Consultation Ageing in Europe Programme 3 Words of Welcome Monday, November 5th, 2012 The motivation for this consultation is twofold: Firstly, we are looking back on more than 20 years of cooperation between the Social Service Agency of the Protestant Churches in Germany (DWEKD) and the Social Service Agencies of the Regional Churches with the Central and Eastern European Churches. And secondly, the consultation is being held in the context of the European Year for active ageing and solidarity between generations :00 p.m. Arrival Welcome Dr. Peter Bartmann, Diakonia Germany Protestant Federal Association, Berlin Since the fall of the iron curtain, a multitude of assisted living centers for senior citizens, nursing homes, and various services for assisting the elderly have been newly established in Central and Eastern Europe by social and church related organisations. Churches and in some cases, their diaconal or social organisations were given back their property by the state and set about renovating their estates. Thus, a variety of diaconal and ecumenical partnerships came into being in Central and Eastern Europe. This culture of cooperation is wide-ranging: it encompasses direct financial support as well as forms of indirect support, such as the exchange of experiences. Tuesday, November 6th, 2012 The EU accession countries had to implement EU requirements very quickly while receiving only very limited financial assistance from the state to do so. The reason for this is that the subsidiarity principle does not form the basis for a cooperation between state and welfare organisations in Central and Eastern Europe. This consultation will give us the opportunity to reflect on our experiences gathered from active and long standing partnerships. It also focuses on the topics of dementia, self-determined life and living spaces in old age, as well as living spaces for the young and old. What tasks and challenges do we face jointly with our partners in Central and Eastern Europe? Which common challenges affect us regarding the ageing of the societies in Europe? Which concepts, approaches and ideas exist? What culture of cooperation do we want?
