Thus, participants from local solar firms, industrial companies with an interest to install PV on their and distribution utilities can acquire important know-how that is relevant for the implementation of solar PV systems. Furthermore, the training serves to provide background knowledge for representatives of local banks and equity investors as well as regulatory authorities and policy makers to better understand the technical specifics of a wide range of PV system applications. General background The market for solar energy in Ghana is growing, with the government putting in place ambitious strategic policies and regulations to encourage the use of Photovoltaics (PV) in order to meet the rising national electricity demand. Economically viable alternatives to the use of existing fossil fuels include PV stand-alone systems, PV-diesel hybrid systems, as well as off-grid systems. German companies have gained broad experience in developing and applying these technologies as well as in providing engineering services that are relevant to the Ghanaian market. Key to the expansion of these technologies and services in the Ghanaian market is the building of local capacity as well as the establishment of business partnerships that include the Ghanaian solar industry, local power generation companies and the public sector. The German Solar Training Week, organized in the framework of the renewables Made in Germany initiative, aims to facilitate new business partnerships and strengthen existing ones.

The topics of the GSTW 2015 are Appropriate Applications of PV Systems, Batteries in PV Systems, PV-Diesel Hybrid and Off-Grid Systems, and Solar Pumping. Participants gain the following benefits by attending the GSTW: Build capacity in the technical and financial aspects of PV-Diesel Hybrid Systems, Off-Grid Systems, Battery Technologies, and Solar Pumping Identify new business partnerships with reliable German companies Strengthen existing partnerships with German companies Participants may attend the programme during the entire week or only choose individual sessions. Participation is free of charge. Each session is explained further below and the respective target groups are outlined.
