Lesson times Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 6:00 p.m. You ll learn in a group for approx. four weeks, either in a morning or afternoon course, depending on the institute you choose and the course level. There are 12 possible starting dates spread over the entire year. This will enable you to develop your language skills and combine any number of courses to create a systematic language-learning program. At the start of your course we will ask you about your individual learning goals and follow up with ongoing support during the learning process. This results in tight integration of the classroom lessons, selfstudy activities and practice. At all levels you also have the option of taking one of our examinations, which are recognized around the world. 4 INTENSIVE COURSES INTENSIVE 2 Approx. two weeks, nine days of lessons 45 UI (approx. 25 UI per week) max. class size: Lesson times Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 6:00 p.m. For participants who only have two weeks and want to activate their German language skills. You will take part in an Intensive 4 course for two weeks. At the start of your course we will ask you about your individual learning goals and follow up with ongoing support during the learning process. This results in tight integration of the classroom lessons, self-study activities and language practice. If you would like to continue learning at a later date at the level you reached in this course, please get in touch with us. We ll be happy to advise you. There are no lessons on those dates. Lesson times First week: 8:30 a.m. 12:00 noon; second week: 8:30 a.m. 12:45 The Heidelberg Summer Course will sweep you away to Germany s most enchanting city. In the mornings you ll take part in active language training sessions. The afternoon program features a wide variety of cultural and leisure activities carefully coordinated with the lesson contents. You ll try out your new German skills amid the spectacular architecture and old-world charm of Heidelberg, benefiting from advanced learning technologies in a fully equipped conference environment and inspired by the ambience of Germany s oldest university city. Your accommodation will be in the four-star Chester Hotel on a lively campus. Enrollment for this course is handled through the Goethe- Institut Mannheim. 8 INTENSIVE COURSES DSH EXAM PREPARATION Approx. four weeks, 17 days of lessons UI, approx. 25 UI per week max. class size: 16 1,095 1 / 1,225 1 Lesson times Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 6:00 p.m. Are you planning to attend college or university in Germany? First you will need to provide proof of an adequate knowledge of German. You can demonstrate the necessary skills by completing the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH). In this exam preparation course you will receive instruction from specialized teachers as well as individual advice and support. You ll become familiar with the DSH exam, practice the various question types in all sections of the exam and improve your language skills. Our well-equipped media resource center offers a wide selection of additional practice materials for individual study. The Goethe-Institut Mannheim provides preparatory courses for the DSH at the University of Mannheim and conducts the examination jointly with the university. The examination is recognized by other universities. Language course with 600 UI Orientation course with 60 UI In the language course you will practice communication for various areas of everyday life in Germany. In the orientation course that follows, you will learn about German culture, politics, history and the legal system as well as values and customs that are important in German life. After completing the Level B1 Deutschtest für Zuwanderer DTZ language test and the Leben in Deutschland test, you will receive the Integration Course Certificate. 9

10 EVENING COURSES TestDaF EXAM PREPARATION Approx. eight weeks, 16 evenings UI (6 UI per week) max. class size: Lesson times Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 8:30 p.m. For advanced learners at Level B2 and higher. Learners will get to know the examination structure on the basis of examples and simulations of the various sections while practicing techniques/strategies. At the institute, you will learn in modern, well-equipped classrooms and will have full access to a media resource center, including an extensive collection of practice materials. 11 EVENING COURSES GERMAN IN THE EVENING Approx. 12 weeks, 24 evenings UI (6 UI per week) max. class size: Lesson times Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:15 8:45 p.m. Are you living in Germany and interested in improving your German? Our German in the evening courses offer you efficient language training with plenty of variety as well as qualified level placement and advice. In communicative lessons geared to the target group, you will get practice in all of the skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. There is a strong focus on the language skills needed for real-world situations. At the institute, you will learn in modern, well-equipped classrooms and will have full access to a media resource center, including an extensive collection of practice materials. The German in the evening courses are based on the Common European Framework for Languages, and each course builds on the content of the previous one. 16 SPECIAL COURSES FOR PROFESSIONALS GERMAN COMMUNICATION TRAINING FOR DOCTORS Four weeks, 16 days of lessons UI max. class size: 16 1,080 Lesson times Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 6:00 p.m. This communication training course is intended for doctors. This is the course for you if you have been working for some time in Germany or are about to begin a residency to train as a specialist at a German hospital. The focus is on communication skills and intercultural competency as key requirements for working effectively in the field of medicine. Doctor-patient communication as well as interactions between medical colleagues are explored and practised in various scenarios. You will learn medical and pharmaceutical terminology, the everyday German terms for symptoms and anatomy, various forms of clinical documentation and the correct way to write a doctor s letter. We will practice patient interviews with you, for example for case histories and examinations. Other topics include the German health care system, clinical structures, patient and case presentations and equipment diagnostics. 19 SPECIAL COURSES FOR PROFESSIONALS / EVENING COURSE GERMAN COMMUNICATION TRAINING FOR NURSING SPECIALISTS Eight weeks UI, 6 UI per week max. class size: Lesson times Monday and Wednesday, 6:15 8:45 p.m. This is the course for you if you are a nursing professional currently working in Germany or planning to take on a position at a German hospital or nursing care facility. Our German course will enhance your communication and intercultural skills for the clinical working environment. You will expand your knowledge of medical German and the language skills needed for professional life. Practice activities will prepare you for verbal communication with patients and family members, team colleagues and superiors. You will also practice written documentation. Another focus of the course is on intercultural differences, for example with regard to standards of care, procedures and responsibilities, as well as everyday dealings with patients and their family members.
