1 Tim Malloy, Assistant Director, Quinnipiac University Poll (203) Rubenstein Associates, Inc. Public Relations Contact: Pat Smith (212) FOR RELEASE: JULY 30, 2015 TRUMP TOPS REPUBLICAN PACK BY WIDE MARGIN, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; BUT DEMS TRUMP TRUMP IN GENERAL ELECTION With 20 percent of Republican voters, Donald Trump is the clear leader in the crowded Republican presidential primary field, but he trails any of three leading Democratic contenders by wide margins in general election matchups, according to a Quinnipiac University National poll released today. Trump s 20 percent is the largest tally for a Republican contender in any national poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Behind Trump are Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with 13 percent and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 10 percent. No other Republican tops 6 percent and 12 percent are undecided. Trump also tops the no way list as 30 percent of Republican voters say they would definitely not support him. New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie is next at 15 percent with Bush at 14 percent. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets 55 percent of Democratic voters nationwide, with 17 percent for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and 13 percent for Vice President Joseph Biden. No other candidate tops 1 percent with 11 percent undecided. Clinton tops the Democrats no way list with 9 percent, followed by former Maryland Gov. Martin O Malley and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee at 8 percent each. They love him and they hate him. Donald Trump triumphs on the stump so far, but do voters REALLY want him? Maybe not so much, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. The good news for Secretary Hillary Clinton is that she is over 50 percent among Democrats and has a double-digit lead over Trump. -more-
2 Quinnipiac University Poll/July 30, 2015 page 2 The not-so-good news is that she is locked in too-close to call races with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. And Vice President Joseph Biden runs just as well as her against the top Republicans, Malloy added. Matchups among all American voters show: Clinton thumps Trump percent. She gets 41 percent to Bush s 42 percent and gets 44 percent to Walker s 43 percent. Biden tops Trump percent. He gets 43 percent to Bush s 42 percent and ties Walker percent. Sanders beats Trump percent. Bush edges Sanders percent and Walker slips past Sanders percent. Trump has the worst favorability rating of any Republican or Democrat, a negative percent among all voters, with Clinton getting a negative percent score, her worst ever. Ratings for other leading contenders are: percent for Bush, his best score ever; percent for Walker, also his best ever; percent for Biden, his best score in seven years; percent for Sanders, his best score ever. Naming the most important quality in deciding their presidential vote, 37 percent want a candidate who is honest and trustworthy, while 33 percent want someone who cares about their needs and problems and 26 percent want some with strong leadership qualities. Trump and Clinton have the worst scores among top candidates on honesty and caring: Trump is not honest and trustworthy, voters say percent, and he doesn t care about their needs and problems, voters say percent. Clinton is not honest and trustworthy, voters say percent, and doesn t care about their needs and problems, voters say percent. Republicans say Trump is honest and Democrats say Clinton is honest, but among all voters, both candidates come up short, Malloy asked. How can you become a general election front-runner if most voters don t trust you? From July 23 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,644 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 710 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points and 681 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
