1 Office 2010 OPK Q&A System Builders 1. Why do I run the OPK s oemsetup batch file in the command prompt window and get the following error message? Answer: this error message usually comes-up when the installer does not run the OPK setup from an elevated command prompt window. Run the command prompt window as an administrator. The best option is installing the OPK with the PC s operating system in audit mode (refer to Windows sysprep). 2. Are all Office SKUs included in a single Office OPK disk image? Answer: each disk image contains all Office 2010 SKUs, Office Starter, Office OOBE and documentation for each language. That is, one disk image contains everything necessary for a specific language. 3. What are the Office SKUs and the applications available with each one? Answer: the following table and graphics outline the Office SKUs and the applications contained within each one. After that, those non-purchased applications will enter in reduced functionality mode (RFM) and the user will only be allowed to open, view and print files created with those applications. 4. Why I should not preload the Office bit version? Answer: end-users will not benefit from the 64-bit version unless they plan to run 2GB+ Access databases or similar sizes Excel spreadsheets. Furthermore, the 64-bit version currently lacks compatibility with most plugins that end-users currently install in their Office suite, creating a frustrating customer experience. Therefore, Microsoft recommends that the System Builder only installs the Office 64-bit version if specifically instructed by its customer. The 32-bit version is completely compatible with 64-bit OSs. 5. Office 2007 was preinstalled and Office 2010 is preloaded. What is the difference between preinstalled and preloaded? Answer: the preinstall process encompasses copying all Office files to the PC and then expand them, register keys in the registry among other tasks, which used to take System Builder s valuable time. The preload process only copies the files to the PC. The installation only takes place when the user decides to buy a key and initiate the Office setup process. 6. What if the user does not want to buy the Office key immediately? With Office 2007 the user could try Office for 60 days. Answer: Office 2010 allows users to experience several of the Office features through Office Starter, which includes simpler versions of Word and Excell. The customers can use those two applications for unlimited time and when they decide to buy Office, both Office OOBE and Office Starter provide a clear upgrade path. 7. I no longer see Office OOBE and Office Starter when I install Office Answer: this is by design. The Office 2010 setup includes uninstalling Office OOBE and Office Starter.

3 8. Why I cannot run the Office 2010 OPK installation on PC running Windows XP? Answer: this is by design. The Office 2010 OPK only supports Windows Vista SP1 and Windows 7 RTM and above. 9. Will customers who buy PCs running Windows XP today upgrade their Office 2007 to 2010? Answer: Yes. Office 2010 supports Windows XP. 10. Can I preload the Office 2010 OPK in a different language than the PC s OS? Answer: Yes. The Office 2010 OPK supports installation on different language OS. 11. Why Microsoft says I should keep the drive letter Q: free? Answer: Office Starter uses a virtualization technology that requires the use of a drive letter as if it was a fixed drive. Despite it is not an actual drive or partition its letter ID is taken by the OS. The letter Q: was chosen for its low usage. 12. Why I get an access denied message and cannot access the drive Q:? Answer: this is by design. This feature prevents users or other applications from accidentally damaging the Q: drive file structure. 13. How much disk space does the Office OPK take? What are the Office 2010 system requirements? Answer: it varies according to the language. The OPK image size can vary from approximately 1.7GB to 2.1GB. However, since it only loads one version of Microsoft Office (32 or 64-bit) the size on the customer s PC can vary from approximately 1.1GM to 1.5GB. Answer: All required OEM IDs for Windows Live, Bing Bar, and MSN / Bing browser defaults are included directly in the PC Essentials Deployment Guide. There is one set of codes for the entire System Builder Channel, we do not track System Builders individually. Inclusion of these codes is a requirement of the PC Essentials Program. These codes are used by Microsoft to track the origination of traffic to Bing and Windows Live properties. 15. How often will Windows Live and Bing Bar applications be updated on OPC?

4 Answer: Windows Live and Bing Bar applications are updated periodically. Currently Windows Live operates on an 18-month development cycle and Bing Bar on a 6-month development cycle. The latest versions of these products will be made available on OPC as soon as possible. System Builders will be notified by when updates become available. System Builders must ship the latest version of each product. 16. What is the difference between Windows Live Toolbar and Bing Bar? Answer: Windows Live Toolbar and Bing Bar are separate toolbars. Windows Live Toolbar will be discontinued in late 2010 (when Windows Live Wave 4 releases), and Bing Bar will become the only PC Essentials toolbar. Until then, System Builders should ship Bing Bar if it is supported in their market, and Windows Live Toolbar otherwise. Details are included in the PC Essentials Deployment Guide. 17. What home page should I expect to see? Answer: The home page default for PC Essentials is This is a vanity URL that currently redirects to the country-specific bing.com site. In the future, this redirect may be changed to MSN.com in markets where it is available. System Builders will be notified of this change in advance.

This means the Q: drive letter is already being used by something else on this computer. Office Starter To-Go requires installation to this drive letter. If the Q: drive cannot be made available, you will not be able to use Office Starter To-Go on this computer. 4. Why do I have a Q: drive when using Office Starter To-Go? Office Starter To-Go uses the Click-to-Run technology that requires the use of a virtual application drive, which is why you see the Q:. 5. What is the Q: drive? This means that you have chosen to install an Office 2010 Click-to-Run suite, such as Office Starter 2010, Office Starter To-Go, Office Home & Student, or Office Home & Business. These products are based on Application Virtualization technology. The Q:\ drive is the virtual file system drive where virtualized apps "live" in the file system namespace. The Q:\ drive is not a real drive; it has no space and is not accessible from Windows Explorer or My Computer. 6. Are my Office documents also stored in this Q: drive? By default, Office will save your documents to the My Documents folder. NOTE: Microsoft strongly recommends you do not save any Office documents to the Q: drive, as they will not be accessible from Windows Explorer. Also, if a repair is needed to the Office installation files, the entire Q: drive may be removed and recreated, therefore any Office documents that are stored at that location will also be removed. 7. Can I hide or delete the Q: drive? No. Any access to the Q: drive, including hiding or deleting it, has been removed. 8. Can I rename the Q: drive? Yes. Just right-click your mouse cursor on the drive and rename it. 9. Why is my backup program giving me errors when attempting to access the Q: drive? The Q: drive is non-accessible in order to protect the integrity of the Office installation files. Why can t I access the Q: drive in My Computer, but I can access it from the File, Save menu inside my Office applications? When an Office Click-to-Run application is running, it requires access to the virtual file system. This is why you can access the Q: drive from your File and Save menus.

If I do save any documents or s to the Q:\ why can t I see them from My Computer? The Q: drive is non-accessible from My Computer in order to protect the integrity of the Office installation files. Also, if a repair is needed to the Office installation files, the entire virtual drive may be removed and recreated, therefore any Office documents that are stored at that location may also be removed. 12. Can I install other applications to the Q: drive? The Q: drive is non-accessible to external applications in order to protect the integrity of the Office installation files. 13. If I obtain a full version of Microsoft Office 2010 by clicking on the Purchase button from within Microsoft Office Starter, what will happen to Microsoft Office Starter when I install Office 2010? During the installation of Microsoft Office 2010, Office Starter is automatically removed from your machine, including the Q drive. 14. What if I go to the local retail store and purchase a single Microsoft Office 2010 application, such as OneNote or Outlook? If you have installed your single Office 2010 application by clicking on the Activate button inside the Microsoft Office 2010 window, then Microsoft Office Starter will be removed. Note: Microsoft does not recommend this method of installing a standalone program alongside of Office Starter. We recommend inserting the DVD or CD and running the setup program from that location. That installation method will not remove Office Starter 2010, and you can enjoy both programs.
