6 mainstage concerts alice tully hall DESTINATION VIENNA: MOZART, SCHOENBERG, & BRAHMS Vienna has likely produced more music beloved by more people than any city in the world. No Grand Tour would be complete without a stop in the Austrian capital, and on this visit listeners will experience Vienna during three of its definitive artistic eras. While Mozart represents Classical perfection, Brahms supplies Romantic fervor, and Arnold Schoenberg bids a nostalgic farewell to the nineteenth century while offering a tantalizing taste of music to come. Mozart Quintet in C minor for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Cello, K. 406 (1788) Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 4 (1899) Brahms Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 18 ( ) tuesday 11/15/16 Sean Lee, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Violin Matthew Lipman, Richard O Neill, Viola David Finckel, Keith Robinson, Cello SOLO BACH The power of Bach is felt as deeply in his solo works as in his music for large ensemble. CMS presents a rare opportunity to hear six extraordinary artists performing works of astounding ingenuity, revealing Bach at the height of his compositional skill as he mines each instrument s unique expressive potential. Bach Partita in A minor for Flute, BWV 1013 (after 1723) Bach Suite No. 3 in C major for Cello, BWV 1009 (c. 1720) Bach Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major for Organ, BWV 552, St. Anne Bach Suite in E minor for Guitar, BWV 996 (after 1712) Bach Sonata in G minor for Violin, BWV 1001 (1720) Bach English Suite in A minor for Keyboard, BWV 807 (before 1720) 12/04/16 Paul Jacobs, Organ Anne-Marie McDermott, Piano Ani Kavafian, Violin Colin Carr, Cello Jason Vieaux, Guitar Tara Helen O Connor, Flute REFLECTIONS Like all composers of the 1820 s, Mendelssohn was awestruck by the powerful profundity of Beethoven s music. In his early Op. 13 string quartet, he freely borrowed ideas from Beethoven, fusing his own youthful style with the voice of the master. The concert s second half finds three diverse composers drawn to a common inspiration: the power of Jewish music, both spiritual and folk-inspired. Beethoven Sonata in E-flat major for Violin and Piano, Op. 12, No. 3 ( ) Mendelssohn Quartet No. 2 in A minor for Strings, Op. 13 (1827) Bloch Nigun ( Improvisation ) from Baal shem, Three Pictures of Hassidic Life for Violin and Piano (1923) Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet, and Piano, Op. 34 (1919) Schoenfield Trio for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano (1986) 11/20/16 Anne-Marie McDermott, Piano Ida Kavafian, Violin Calidore String Quartet (Jeffrey Myers, Ryan Meehan, Violin Jeremy Berry, Viola Estelle Choi, Cello) David Shifrin, Clarinet david shifrin 10 11
