2 General: Spiet djustable Locknuts adjust, preload, and secure bearings and oter macine components on safts and spindles wit a ig degree of stiffness. Tey permit te correct setting of te axial preload of bearings and ensure tat te working loads are carried safely. Te locknuts are secured positively witout additional components, keys, or extra macining. Te ig loadcarrying ability of te locknut is acieved troug full 0 contact around te tread flanks guaranteeing a vicegrip locking effect. Tis contact around te full circumference ensures tat te locknut will not loosen, even wen subjected to extreme sock loads. Tis is an important feature, since locking wit many coercially available locknuts relies on only one or a few "pinc" points on te circumference of te tread. noter advantage of te SPIETH locknut is te feature of aligning its contact face eiter wit zero runout or, if necessary, adjusted to suit inaccuracies of inline connecting components, tus compensating for minor errors of parallelism due to te stackup of mating parts. Spindle runout, due to uneven bearing loading, can terefore be eliminated. ig degree of accuracy can be maintained even wen repetitive tigtening and loosening are required. Te benefits of te SPIETH locknuts offer solutions for a wide range of general precision, eavy macinery, and equipment applications. Te unique locking capability, wit ig stiffness and accuracy, is excellent for spindle applications especially suited for ig speed and/or ig dynamicallyloaded spindles or mecanisms. Tread sizes are equivalent to te standard bearing locknut series N/N merican Standard National Class Fine, and metric sizes to ISO H fit. Te widts approximate two N/N locknuts. SPIETH SERIES MSW eavyduty DJUSTBLE LOCKNUTS are applied in conjunction wit combined needle and roller trust bearings, plain trust bearings, or taper roller bearings, on ballscrews, worm drives, bevel gears, and oter igtrustcarrying components. Design: Two axiallyarranged radial grooves, one from te outside and one from te inside, result in a diapragmlike crosssection wic gives te nut a predetermined axial elasticity. Te internal groove divides te nut into a clamping and locking section. Depending on te nut size, tree to eigt axially arranged socket ead cap screws are used to clamp te sections togeter. Tis eliminates te tread flank clearance between te saft tread and locknut and allows for sockproof locking. Depending on te size and load capacity, two types of locknuts are available. For all MSR, MS, and MSW sizes up to locknut 0., te axial bearing preload is adjusted by tigtening te locknut troug direct face contact. Size MSW 0.0 and larger use a number of clamping screws to reduce friction on te nut contact face, tus allowing for accurate preload adjustment. MSR Locknuts are made of alloy steel, MSW Locknuts are made of eattreated alloy steel. Bot locknut series ave a black oxide finis for rust protection. Te nut tread is manufactured to merican Standard Class Fine or ISO H fit. Te contact face is macined square to te treads witin.000 in. Bot types of locknuts are syetrical in construction and are manufactured from solid stock. Treads and contact faces are macined by special singlepoint treading tools in one setup to guarantee squareness. Balancing, terefore, is required only in extreme igspeed cases. Te SPIETH Locknut s main feature is its capability to lock onto te treads over te entire 0degree circumference. PRELODING NUTS: ll MSR, MS sizes, and MSW sizes up to 0.: Tese nuts ave oles or slots on te outer diameter, wic are suitable for available radial spanner wrences. Wen te nuts are used in recessed applications, a tubular face spanner wrenc wit exposed prongs for MSW series and pins for MSR or MS series is recoended. See Fig. 1 on page. PRELODING NUTS: Size MSW.0 and larger: Tese nuts are screwed into position eiter by and or by an available ook spanner wrenc and locked into position witout making face contact. Hardened clamping screws are ten used axially for preloading; wic, after adjusting, are secured in position by radial set screws troug aluminum slugs. See Fig. on page. Mating Component: MTING THRED: Te saft tread must be manufactured to merican Class fine or ISO Class if applied for igprecision spindles or class medium or ISO class g for general applications. Surface rougness must be low to avoid compaction during sock loads. MTING PRTS FOR LOCKNUTS UP TO SIZE MSW 0.: Te preload torque is applied directly to te nut. However, means must be provided on te saft to counter te torque. For optimum results, te accuracy of components assembled between te saft, soulder, and locknut contact face (bearing, gears, spacers, etc.) must be parallel and square to te bore witin.000 or better. In addition, te surface finis of te assembled components sould be a minimum of microinces or better in order to avoid surface compaction under load. MTING PRTS FOR NUTS SIZE MSW.0 ND LRGER: Te axial preload applied troug te ardened clamping screws must not act directly on te bearing face or soft surfaces. trust ring at least as tick as te bearing race sould be sandwiced in between te bearing and locknut. Te ring must be ardened, parallel, and square as specified above. If te design requires oter components suc as gears to be placed between te bearing and te locknut, again te accuracy must be eld as specified above to avoid excessive deflection and surface compaction. If tese components are ardened, te clamping screws can press directly against tem witout a trust ring. Page

3 Locking screw luminum (slug) Set screw Clamping section Locking section Clamping screw Clamping screw Fig. 1 Fig. Setting an axial pretensioning force: Fig. Te axial pretension of a treaded connection often plays a decisive role in successful function and must terefore be set wit accuracy. However, in most assembly sops, direct measurement of tis variable is not possible, making indirect metods of setting necessary. For tis purpose, te locknut tigtening torque corresponding to te required pretensioning force is calculated. Tis factor can be determined using te following equation. For all MSR, MS and MSW sizes up to 0.: Mv = (Fv + B) ( + µ r ) Mv = Tigtening torque of te locknut [Nm] Fv = Required axial pretension force of te screw connection [N] B = Locknutspecific allowance [N], compensates face end relief due to te locking process = Constant [], includes te calculation factors for te respective tread diameters (see table) µ = Coefficient of friction for te face contact surface of te locknut. pproximate value µ = 0.1 steel/steel r = Effective mean friction radius for te face contact surface of te locknut [] 1 N = ˆ 0. lbs 1 Nm = ˆ. inlbs 1 inc = ˆ. kg cm =. inlbssec Te locking process places te saft tread under stress and develops intensive surface contact (=ig axial rigidity). t te same time, tis serves to relieve tension on te face contact surface of te locknut. Tis effect can be simply compensated for by increasing te tigtening torque at assembly. Tis iger tigtening torque is determined by using te allowance B relative to te required pretensioning force Fv. For MSW size.0 and larger: Te tigtening torque for te set screw is determined according to te following formula: MD = Fv d ( + µd ) MD = Tigtening torque per set screw [Nm] Fv = Required axial pretensioning force of te screw connection [N] = Constant [], includes te calculation factors for te respective tread diameters (see table) µ D = Coefficient of friction for te face contact surface of te set screw. pproximate value = 0.1 d = Dog point dia. of te set screw [] (see table) Page

10 SSEMBLY OF SPIETH DJUSTBLE LOCKNUTS: Note tat te locking screws can only be tigtened wen te nut is engaged entirely on te male tread to avoid distortion of te locknut. Clean and oil te tread before engaging te nut. Once a Spiet locknut as been preloaded and locked on a tread, it sould not be put on anoter tread. Oterwise, ig adjustment accuracy migt not be acievable. For all MSR, MS and up to size 0. (Radial or face spanner wrences are available upon request). Ten loosen te locknut and torque to te desired preload. Secure te locknut in position by tigtening te locking screws D gradually, evenly, and crosswise. Face and radial runout of te mating component caused by suation of small errors in parallelism in te connecting parts can be eliminated by individually adjusting te locking screws (Fig. ). Fig. 1 C D Wit an llen wrenc, sligtly tigten eac locking screw D crosswise and uniformly until te locknut is barely turnable by and (te flank clearance is nearly eliminated). In tis condition, te centerline of te locknut as coincided wit te centerline of te spindle, te mating face is perpendicular to te coon centerline, and te tread flanks of te locknut are in uniform contact over te full circumference of bot te clamping and locking section (Fig..
