Internal and Party walls YTONG interior walls are masonry-based, solid, non-flammable, durable and smooth surface. XELLA supplies walls that meet the construction industry s demands for quality, reliability, security, comfort and an attractive finish. Versatile YTONG interior walls are made of story high partition panels. Full details of the unique properties of these elements can be found in the ETA certification available with the product. YTONG panels are highly versatile and ideally suited for the high speed construction of: partition walls, storage room walls, non-load bearing party walls, corridor walls, service ducts. Because these panels are not sensitive to moisture they are extremely suitable for use in damp areas like storage rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. But they can also be used for specialised projects like care centres, hospitals, schools, etc. YTONG panels are also ideal for the high speed construction of solid, high quality walls for offices. The walls are available in three types: 70 mm thick, 580 kg/m 3 dry weight density, 100 mm thick, 580 kg/m 3 dry weight density and 100 mm thick, 720 kg/m 3 dry weight density for extra sound insulation performance. Productivity Speed without loss of quality. That is the main characteristic of YTONG interior walls. Because aerated concrete is impermeable to ingress of moisture, the panels can be delivered to site at an early stage in the construction process when the structure is still open to the elements. A significant advantage that substantially reduces the time required to construct the interior walls. The panels are relatively light weight and smooth finish also contribute enormously to the speed of construction. And there are many other advantages: by supplying the panels as modular elements for partition walls, storage room walls, non-bearing party walls and corridor walls, conduit ducts. XELLA offers contractors the opportunity of constructing the entire non-load bearing structure of the building from a single material that also can be sourced from a single sub-contractor. Superior solution YTONG internal walls are superior to alternative solutions. Creating greater added value for all those involved: the developer, whose invests in a high quality performance, the contractor, who can build faster and better, the installer, who benefits from the ease of installation of the system and the end user, who enjoys greater comfort and peace of mind. This brochure goes into all these specific qualities in detail, describing the choice of material, the various wall applications, the technical properties of aerated concrete, installation methods and panel jointing and sealing. When combined with YTONG blocks and lintels, YTONG interior walls form a complete building system, creating extra added value that further emphasises the quality of this product. Interior walls: introduction 3

Single source The entire non-load bearing part of the building from a single supplier. True convenience, both in terms of product and construction. An intelligent building system that saves time and offers significant construction advantages. In short, the success formula behind YTONG interior walls. Successful track record Partition walls made of YTONG panels have a long and successful track record and have been used in countless new construction projects. No more than you would expect in view of their unique characteristics: single story height walls that rise out of the ground with astounding speed. Highquality, masonry-based, durable and uniform finish. There are other significant benefits for contractors: aerated concrete can be exposed to the elements after delivery to site, without adverse affects. in addition to partition walls, other structures such as storage room walls, corridor walls, and service ducts can be constructed from YTONG panels, the panels are of solid core construction, but still relatively light in weight, efficient hydraulic equipment is used to place and align the panels, resulting in a perfectly flat and uniform wall that is easy and simple to apply finishes. Density classes YTONG interior walls are available in a variety of types and sizes. The requirements of the application determine the choice of product. The density class and thickness should be selected on the basis of the degree of sound insulation and fire resistance that is required. Aerated concrete is a material that combines strength, design, flexibility and an effective acoustic barrier through its micro cellular construction. YTONG panels are offered in two density classes: G4/600 and G5/800 (for extra sound insulation), with a dry weight density of 580 kg/m 3 and 720 kg/m 3 respectively. The standard and high-performance sound insulating walls are 100 mm thick, as opposed to the basic wall, which is 70 mm thick. The length of the panels var ies between 2400 and 3400 mm, increasing in size in increments of 20 mm. These extensive lengths satisfy specific market demands. More and more homes are being built with a ceiling height of up to 3400 mm, as ceiling heights of up to 3400 mm are becoming normal in offices YTONG panels cater to these requirements as well. 4 Interior walls: single source

Partition walls YTONG interior walls satisfy the sound insulation requirement of the United Kingdom Building Regulations Part E2 (2003). For example, partition walls between two bedrooms, or two offices, should be constructed from 100 mm thick panels in the G5/800 weight class. If there is a door in the wall, lower sound insulation requirements apply and a G4/600 panel of 70 or 100 mm thickness can be used. All the other partition walls in a building can also be made of this type of panel. The panels are: strong, masonry-based, quick to install exert a low floor load, installed with hardly any waste, have a high quality finish non-flammable. provide an acoustic barrier simple for wall fixing close tolerance of material thickness (+1mm / -1mm) Interior walls: single source 5

Speed and quality Speed with no loss of quality is one of the key advantages of YTONG interior walls. The success of this type of wall is largely attributable to the storey high separation panel. The panel has been designed specifically for use when creating room layouts inside both residential and commercial buildings. The walls do not require any further preparation prior to wallpapering. The YTONG panels are fast and efficient to install and, after the joints have been filled, they can be wallpapered with no further preparation. Calculating the quantity of panels required is simply a question of dividing the length of the wall by the panel width. The result will not generally be a whole number, but the flat, rectangular panels are easy to cut to size. The height is also easy to determine by subtracting 30 to 50 mm from the storey height. And then it is just a question of placing the panels and filling the joints. An easy job when the tools and installation materials provided by YTONG are used. Speed The speed of construction depends on three factors impermeability to moisture, light weight and ease of handling simplicity of installation and finish. Because aerated concrete is impermeable to moisture, the panels can be delivered and erected on site at an early stage in the construction process. A site crane transports the panel packs to the correct location for distribution around the relevant floors. An YTONG special unloading hook attached to the crane is used for this. The walls can be installed 6 Interior walls: speed and quality

The speed of building depends on three factors: - indifference to moisture, - light weight, - simple finishing coat. and aligned when the structure is still open to the elements. This substantially reduces the final construction time required for the interior walls. The panels relatively light weight also contributes enormously to the speed of construction. A hydraulic installation trolley can also act as a saw table, which allows workers to install the panels efficiently and quickly. Ready for wallpapering The surface of the interior walls is smooth and ready for final finishing. This means that the walls do not require any further preparation prior to wallpapering. Even though aerated concrete is a type of masonry wall, it is easy to cut when chasing out channels for electrical conduits and pipes; also cutting holes for electric power sockets is a simple operation. This increases the speed of finishing; thus likewise, the overall speed of construction. Interior walls: speed and quality 7

151 apartments in Den Helder, the Netherlands Working with panels keeps waste to a minimum. Construction sequence An efficient sequence of construction for a project where all the non-load bearing building sections are made completely from YTONG panels is summarised below. This is not the only solution: other sequences that achieve maximum speed of construction and result in an optimum construction plan are also possible. A practical sequence is: delivery to site in full 24tonne loads distribution to various areas on working floors setting-out of internal floors installing with specialist equipment (information available on request) Building without waste Not only are YTONG interior walls fast and efficient to install and result in a high quality end product, they are also environmentally friendly. Cellular concrete is made of natural raw materials with recycling and high efficiencies during production while the construction process minimises any adverse effects on the environment. Prefabricated products should be used whenever possible in order to keep building site waste to a minimum. YTONG interior walls can best be described as tailor-made prefab products. The number of panels needed is calculated prior to delivery to keep costs as low as possible. Another important consideration is that the panels are easy to cut to size and the panel remnant from one wall is used to start the next wall. 8 Interior walls: speed and quality

Technically a more suitable material The unique advantage of YTONG interior walls is that all non-load bearing parts of the building are made from a single material. This creates a homogeneous structure using partition panels that are made of aerated concrete, a building material of excellent quality. Product range Partition panels are flat and rectangular. Each panel incorporates three 4mm diameter reinforcing bars that strengthen the panel to allow transportation and safe handling. are placed on pallets and shrink wrapped in film before delivery. The panels are generally transported to site on a flat bad articulated vehicle. Unloading requires a relatively even, preferably reasonably dry surface and a site lifting device in the form of a crane or fork-lift truck. Density class G4/600 (standard) Thickness mm Width mm Length* mm G5/ (sound insulating) * Length increase in increments of 20 mm Thickness/height relationship The table shows the minimum thickness of non-load bearing interior walls (G4/600), installed using thin-bed mortar, relative to wall height. Minimum wall thickness relative to wall height Wall height mm < > Thickness mm Because of the low density of aerated concrete, an average lateral loading of 0.5 kn/m 2 should be calculated when separation panels are used as non-load bearing interior walls. Due to the weight of the panels a hydraulic installation rig must be used during placing and positioning. Weight Non load-bearing interior walls can withstand various shearing loads such as those exerted by washbasins, kitchen cabinets and so on. The wall thickness recommendation assumes that the walls are anchored to the load-bearing structure at the top. Interior walls: technically a more suitable material 9

Fire resistance Aerated concrete can be considered inflammable according to the definition in BS 476 Part The extent to which fire can be contained by non-bearing walls is partially dependent on how the joints have been constructed. The panels satisfy or exceed all the fire regulations that apply for residential construction. Where fireproof foam is used, the width of the joint between the wall and the ceiling may not exceed 10 mm and the foam must be covered using modified gypsum or fire retardant mastic. Minimum fire resistance of separation panels Thickness Fire resistance mm Cellular concrete + Cellular concrete fireproof joints* * Connection and dilation joints filled with fireproof PUR. Heat insulation Specifying aerated concrete automatically means specifying high heat insulation. As a building material, aerated concrete offers the highest insulation value achievable with a masonry-based material. This may mean that less insulation is required when the panels are used as inner cavity wall leaves, allowing a reduction in the total thickness of the cavity wall needed to meet the thermal requirements as set out in the United Kingdom Building Regulations Part L (1 and 2 April 2006). Heat-insulation Density-class Coefficient of thermal conductivity W/mK Thickness mm Rc value m 2 K/W U-value W/m 2 K G4/600 (standaard) 0, ,44 1, ,63 1,26 G5/800 (sound insulation) 0, ,45 1,63 In all other cases, the thermal resistance of the partition wall construction is calculated using the values in the table. 10 Interior walls: technically a more suitable material

Sound insulation Because of its unique surface structure, aerated concrete possesses greater inherent sound insulating properties that one would expect based on the weight of the material. This gives the material excellent noise insulating and noise absorbing properties when used in interior wall applications. Non-load bearing party walls Non-bearing separation walls should be made of two 100 mm thick leaves in combination with a flexible finish (thin coat plaster or other suitable surface finish) The cavity must be at least 75 mm in width and may be insulated with 45 mm mineral wool (Isotherm/ Rockwool/ Fibre Glass) The cavity wall leaves may not be bridged in any way. Masonry floors and walls that are in direct connection with this structure must be of sufficient mass (at least 500 kg/m 2 ) or a movement joint must be present where they meet the cavity wall. A movement joint must also be used where wooden structures are in contact with the wall. Masonry-based separation walls with a surface mass of between 30 and 100 kg/m 2 must be abutted to the external wall using a flexible joint. Partition walls and noise insulation The United Kingdom Build ing Regulations Part E 2 (2003) require partition walls between a room with a bath or water closet and other habitable rooms- to have an airborne sound insulation value of 40 db RW. YTONG partition walls made of 100 mm separation panels in the G5/800 weight class satisfy this requirement, when finished with 4 mm skim plaster on both sides. Technical data Technical data is indispensable when performing structural engineering calculations. General technical data and a summary of the most commonly used calculation values for cellular concrete are shown below. The density of aerated concrete is extremely low in comparison to many other masonrybased materials. 12 Flexible installation Regardless of how high the intrinsic quality of a product is, final installation determines perceived product quality. This is true of YTONG interior walls as well. The installation instructions for placing one storey high separation panels, which are also included in the ETA certification available with the product, provides a clear guideline. While panel processing is fast and convenient, we have summarised the installation methods that give the best end result below. Joints to the main structure Allowance should be made in the design at the head of wall for deflection from the floor: All junctions and joints must allow movement. These joints are a nominal 10 mm wide and should be filled with building foam or mastic. Generally, during construction, a joint width of 15 mm should be maintained between the separation panels and the load-bearing structure. Preventing cracks Shrinkage cracks can be prevented by introducing movement joints when the length of a wall exceeds 5 metres. There are two simple methods by inserting an angle bead and finishing with mastic or by recessing the surface and using plaster mesh. In both cases, the joint is filled with building foam. Walls that are shorter than 5 metres in length do not require movement joints.. Joints between YTONG panels Because of deflection in the floors, two YTONG interior walls installed at right angles to each other will behave differently. The wall that stands parallel to the load-bearing construction presents no problems; the wall at right angles to it will tilt. To prevent cracking, the surface of the panel must be recessed at the point where the walls join. Building foam is injected into the joint, which is then finished using plaster mesh. 12 Interior walls: flexible installation

Ceiling and wall joints Non-load bearing interior walls must be installed in a way that allows some degree of movement. This is required as the floor structure can deflect with time. It is also important to limit the difference between floors, or the roof structure, to less than 15 mm. The various wall to ceiling joint options are indicated in the table. Ceiling joints Building foam and spacer blocks Spacer strips made of expanded polystyrene are placed on the top edge of the separation panels. This creates a joint of approximately 15 mm between the ceiling and the top edge of the wall. This joint is filled with a flexible material. The panels must be anchored to each other. Rebate constructed on site A rebate can be constructed on site by attaching strips of wooden sheet material to the ceiling. A strip of polystyrene foam is then inserted between the rebate and the wall to allow the expected vertical movement in the floor of the upper storey. The panel joint is then finished on each side using a wooden profile. An anchor must be installed at each wall end. Plastic trim profile The trim profile is glued to the ceiling. A strip of polyurethane foam is inserted into the profile. The height of the foam depends on the individual situation. The thickness of this foam strip should be 20 mm in the case of a floor laid on sand. The polystyrene foam strip should be used in the case of a flat roof with hollow channel floor panels. Wall joints The wall joint should be created as follows: Flexible filler A 15mm seam is required at the joint with the external wall. This seam is completely filled with flexible mastic.. Rebate constructed on site A rebate can be constructed on site by attaching a strip of wooden sheet material to the external wall. The panels are then butted up to the strip and finished on either side using a wooden profile or similar. 14 Walls with character Everybody is incredibly enthusiastic about YTONG interior walls. This just goes to prove that it is a product with real character. It can be installed with virtually no waste, is easy to handle and is perfectly flat and virtually ready for the final finsh. Easy to handle Not just buildings themselves, but also the workers who build homes, offices and industrial units, deserve a sustainable product. Sustainable in this case means easy to handle, convenient and consequently more cost effective as sickness absenteeism reduces when workers are well motivated. And there is no greater motivation than working with a high quality product, which, in combination with specially developed tools, is as easy to install as the YTONG panel. With the introduction of more stringent Health and Safety requirements for the United Kingdom construction industry, employers have increas ingly recognised the importance of working conditions, product safety and safe tools and working methods. Research has indicated that the YTONG panel satisfies the demands that modern construction industry logistics place on building products. In fact, installing non-load bearing interior walls in single storey high panel form is much less physically demanding than with many competitive products. Easy manoeuvrability The convenience of the YTONG panel is evident in all phases of the construction project. Delivery for example. YTONG panels can be installed extremely quickly and only require a two-man team. To make transportation even easier, XELLA has developed a special pallet hook which can be attached to a building site crane. As you would expect, the hook is totally safe in use and can be used to deposit the exact number of panels required for each home, apartment and building storey. The ability to place the panels at the desired locations in the phase when the building is still open not only speeds up the construction process, it also reduces the physical demands placed on workers. Moreover, having the right number of panels in the right place ensures minimum waste. This is important for the environment and contributes to better working conditions: a cleaner, better organised workplace is a safer workplace. The advantages of being able to transport panels by crane in this way are particularly significant when erecting tall buildings: comparable products can only be transported to the workplace once the building has been fully sealed against rain and wind. Not only do these products have to be transported by hand, they also have to be moved from place to place several times. 14 Interior walls: walls with character

Easy to install YTONG panels can be installed extremely quickly and only require a two-man team. At first sight, you would expect the job of placing large panels to place extra physical demands on installers. Nothing could be further from the truth: XELLA has also developed a range of tools and accessories that make installation even more convenient. A hydraulic installation rig allows the panels to be installed quickly and easily with a minimum of manual handling. Very little strength is required; the rig does all the hard physical work. The rig also acts as a saw table when a panel has to be cut to size, making this task as effortless as placing the panels. The panels do not have to be sawn by hand either: a circular saw can be used for this, complete with a connection for a vacuum cleaner to suck up dust. Once the panels have been loaded in position on the rig, an installation jib is used for final positioning. The jib is used to raise the panels and then manoeuvre them into the right position. Smooth finish YTONG walls are construction industry front-runners in terms of the amount of finishing they require. Once the panel joints have been cleaned up and any irregularities have been filled, a partition wall, service duct made of YTONG panels is ready for wallpapering. Channels for cables and pipes can be cut quickly and easily and are easily filled once the cables and pipes have been installed. Deformation can occur in all joints where thin-bed mortar has not been used. For example, the plaster layer above flexible joint material needs to be cut to allow movement and the wallpaper covering has to be cut along the ceiling and wall profiles. Interior walls: walls with character 15

Complete building system All non-load bearing walls from a single source of supply. That is the unique advantage of YTONG interior walls. However this building system offers much more than just partition walls, storage room walls, non-bearing walls, corridor walls and service ducts. This complete building system includes blocks and lintels, which allow the construction of bath enclosures, thermal bridge interruptions, chimneypieces and raised floors. Handy building material The YTONG block is a handy, cost-effective building material. Cellular concrete blocks are the best solution for those who want to achieve good results fast. The block is easy to handle (< 18 kilogram), can be installed quickly and is suitable for many different applications. In addition to the practical rectangular block A wide selection of lintels completes the range. The range of blocks and lintels matches the walls in terms of dimensions and physical properties to allow the construction of homoge neous cellular concrete structures that can be finished in a uniform way. 73 apartments, Sequoia, Dordrecht, the Netherlands More details can be found in the dedicated brochure for the blocks and lintels. 16 Interior walls: complete building system

Consumables and trim products XELLA also offers an extensive range of consumables and trim products. Surface damage can also be repaired using proprietary YTONG product. Thin coat plaster can be used to finish YTONG interior walls in preparation for wallpapering or a sprayed coating. There is a plaster available supplied by YTONG Fixings As you would expect, it is possible to attach objects to YTONG interior walls. This is inherent in the requirement for a masonry-based wall with a high quality finish. However, mirrors, for example, should be hung using a different type of fixing than those used for a washbasin. XELLA specifies a wide variety of fasteners that are suitable for use with aerated concrete. YTONG interior walls can be subjected to dynamic loads without any undesirable effects. In addition to simple guidelines for hanging objects in the home, specific solutions have also been provided for mounting sanitary products and other objects like handrails in toilets for disabled persons.
