It was the scene of great triumphs, such as the return of the Medici in 1530 as well as the Bonfire of the Vanities instigated by Savonarola, who was then himself burned at the stake here in 1498 after he was denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic. A marble circle inscription on the piazza shows the location where he was burned. Every year, millions of visitors to Florence and Tuscany enter into the Uffizi to see with their own eyes some of the most famous works of art and masterpieces that have marked mankind s artistic innovation through the centuries. 12 THURSDAY - MAY 26 Page 12 of 19 9:00 AM Vatican Gardens/ Museum 11:00 AM Sistine Chapel 3:00 PM St. Peter's Basilica and Square 6:00 PM Explore Vatican City Vatican City Vatican City, Skip the Line: Vatican Museums Walking Tour Including Sistine Chapel FRIDAY - MAY 27 9:00 AM Explore Ancient Rome, Monti & Celio Although no longer the heart of the city, this is where Rome began, with the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Imperial Forums, and Circus Maximus. This area offers only a few hotels most of them inexpensive to moderate in price and not a lot of great restaurants. Many restaurant owners have their eyes on the cash register and the tour-bus crowd, whose passengers are often herded in and out of these restaurants so fast that they don t know whether the food is any good. Just beyond the Circus Maximus is the Aventine Hill, south of the Palatine and close to the Tiber, now a leafy and rather posh residential quarter with great city views. You will get much more of a neighborhood feel if you stay in Monti (Rome s oldest rione, or quarter) or Celio. Both also have good dining, aimed at locals as well as visitors, and Monti, especially, has plenty of life from aperitivo o clock and into the wee hours of the night. Read more: 10:00 AM Roman Forum 11:30 AM The Colosseum
Page 13 of 19 2:00 PM Imperial Forums Via dei Fori Imperiali Via dei Fori Imperiali, Roma, Lazio, IT 3:00 PM Palatine Hill Palatino / Palatine Hill Roma, LAZIO, IT, :00 PM Explore Monti MONTI You don t actually have to venture far from the tourist traps to find Monti the neighborhood s hidden in plain sight, east of the Roman Forum and just north of the Colosseum. In ancient Roman times, Monti was considered a slum, though it s hard to picture that today; with its eclectic boutiques, chic wine bars, organic markets, and indie galleries, the area is hip with a bohemian edge. At the same time, Monti has somehow retained a cozy, small village feel and still possesses fragments of old-world Italian charm with its Renaissance remnants and old-fashioned trattorias. WHY VISIT? Monti is smaller and arguably less popular than Trastavere and that s exactly why you should go. Here, you ll get a real taste of community, particularly at the lively Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. Sit on the sunny, crowded steps of its fountain while enjoying the terrific gelato from nearby Fatamorgana, or dine al fresco at La Bottega del Caffè and watch as kids play and locals go about their business. SATURDAY - MAY 28 8:00 AM Explore Villa Borghese and Parioll
Page 14 of 19 Villa Borghese & Parioli -- We would call Parioli an area for connoisseurs, attracting those who shun the Spanish Steps and the overly commercialized Via Veneto. It is, in short, Rome s most elegant residential section, a setting for some of the city s finest restaurants, hotels, and public parks. Geographically, Parioli is in fact framed by the green spaces of the Villa Borghese to the south and the Villa Glori and Villa Ada to the north. It lies adjacent to Prati but across the Tiber to the east; it s considered one of the safest districts in the city. All that being said, Parioli is not exactly central, so it can be a hassle as a base if you re dependent on public transportation. The star here is unquestionably Piazza di Spagna, which attracts Romans and tourists alike to idly sit on its celebrated Spanish Steps. Some of Rome s most upscale shopping streets fan out from here, including Via Condotti. In fact, this is the most upscale part of Rome, full of expensive hotels, designer boutiques, and chic restaurants. Read more: SUNDAY - MAY 29
SUNDAY - MAY 29 Page 17 of 19 9:00 AM Explore Centro Storico & the Pantheon Centro Storico & the Pantheon -- One of the most desirable (and busiest) areas of Rome, the Centro Storico ( Historic Center ) is a maze of narrow streets and cobbled alleys dating from the Middle Ages, and filled with churches and palaces built during the Renaissance and baroque eras. The only way to explore it is on foot. Its heart is Piazza Navona, built over Emperor Domitian s stadium and bustling with sidewalk cafes, palazzi, street artists, musicians, and pickpockets. Rivaling Piazza Navona in general activity, the cafe scene, and the nightlife is the area around the Pantheon, which remains from ancient Roman times and is surrounded by a district built much later. South of Corso Vittorio Emanuele and centered on Piazza Farnese and the square of Campo de Fiori, many buildings in this area were constructed in Renaissance times as private homes. West of Via Arenula lies one of the city s most intriguing districts, the old Jewish Ghetto, where the increasingly fashionable dining options far outnumber the hotels. 18 MONDAY - MAY 30 Page 18 of 19 6:45 AM Small Group Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Drive with Positano Stop Pompeii Pompeii, Campania, IT, TUESDAY - MAY 31 9:00 AM Explore Trastevere 10:00 AM Santa Maria basillica in Trastevere Santa Maria in Trastevere This basilica is cavernous and dark. The air here feels ten degrees cooler, and if you go in the early morning, you re often the only person there. You may be alone, but a rich history surrounds you. Legend says that in 38 B.C., a stream of mineral oil erupted at this very place. People took it as a sign the messiah was coming. Pope Calixtus erected a shrine on this location in the 200s A.D. and the spot has never been without a place of worship since. So history lovers, this is your place. This is also your place if you crave beauty. The apse is one of the most stunning in Rome. Created in 1140, the golden mosaic work still shines as if no time has passed. 12:00 PM Lunch at Dar Poeta You re about to discover the best pizza in Rome. Traditional Roman pizza has a very thin crust. Personally, I like something a little thicker. Dar Poeta has the perfect wood-fired crust and absolutely delicious toppings. If you order the Super Bufala you will not be disappointed: Buffalo mozzarella, Parmesan, olives and artichoke hearts. I can literally eat this every week (and I do). If you want something spicy, try the Lingua di Fuoco: Covered in a cured meat that lives up to its name tongue of fire.
Page 19 of 19 This restaurant is relaxing because the food is amazing and the prices are fair. You can eat a very satisfying meal without feeling guilty for overspending your travel budget. Even if you decide to order wine! 2:00 PM Climb Janiculum Hill/ Doria Pamphilj Park That s why you must climb the Janiculum Hill (which looms over Trastevere) and find this park. This large and historic park is full of expansive lawns, umbrella pines, and crumbling statues. Here, nature collides with history. An Italian Wall Lizard darts across a nose-less statue. Pond turtles sun themselves beside a 17th century villa. Rose-ringed Parakeets screech from one palm tree to another. This is where you ll discover you love Rome. The panoramic view is ancient, medieval and modern combined; the Pantheon, Saint Peter s Basilica, the Altar of the Fatherland. Standing here, you peer back in history while feeling completely in the moment. There is no better view of Rome. This is the place that converts tourists into expats.
