1 CHRISTIE S ART JOURNEYS: Art of the Renaissance 5 Days: 23rd 27th April, 15 19th October & 29th October 2nd November Join Abercrombie & Kent and Christie s on a journey through Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance and once inspiration for masters including Brunelleschi, Bernini and Michelangelo. Here history pours from every crevice and the volume of magnificent art and architecture at seemingly every turn makes the fashionable city one of the world s finest open-air museums. Christie s Florence expert Marco Riccomini will join us for part of the tour to share his unrivalled knowledge of the Pitti Palace. For the remainder of the trip we will be accompanied by an A&K guide who is an expert in her field.
2 YOUR A&K GUIDE: ELISABETTA CAPPUGI Elisabetta is a Firenze native, having studied History of Art at the city s acclaimed university before enrolling on the register of the Experts of Arts. Her knowledge of Italian art is lengthy thanks to her position as a guide for the Public Museums of Florence, including the educational section of the Uffizi. She has worked as an artist s agent, coordinated exhibitions and worked with Harvard University professors on Siena works of art, and has written a number of catalogues, campaigns and books. Elisabetta is currently appointed as the expert of art for the Court of Florence and still works as a private professional guide in Florence, much to the delight of her clients. SIGNATURE MOMENTS Expert guided tours of Florence s key sights, including the Duomo, Galleria dell Accademia and Uffizi Gallery Private access to the Vasari Corridor Privileged access to the Pitti Palace with Christie s expert Marco Riccomini Wine and cheese tasting at Alessi, a renowned local enoteca, with the owner Giorgio Alessi Behind the scenes private tour of the Giambologna Chapel, where you ll watch a small team of art restorers work their magic Private viewing of Michelangelo drawings in Casa Buonarroti Private dining at Alle Murate, a palazzo and museum home to the earliest known frescoes depicting Dante and Boccaccio Enjoy lunch and a wine tasting at Villa Corsini in the Tuscan countryside YOUR CHRISTIE S EXPERT: MARCO RICCOMINI Part of your Florence tour will be led by Marco Riccomini, who recently held the position of Director of Department of Old Master Paintings at Christie s in Italy. Prior to joining Christie s in 2005, Marco studied Art History in Florence and Bologna before beginning his career at the Walpole Gallery in London. He was then appointed Head of Department at Finarte Casa d Aste, publishing seven exhibition catalogues on Italian 17th and 18th century paintings and drawings. He also published the complete catalogue of the drawings by Donato Creti at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, and wrote a number of articles for journals such as Nuovi Studi and The Burlington Magazine. Marco says: Florence, where else? Is there a better place on earth to see such an amazing concentration of Renaissance art? This is why I chose the University of Florence to begin my studies in Art History and is why I still regularly visit Florence to study and research in the unparalleled Art History libraries. Of all the museums in Florence, Casa Buonarroti is one of my favourite places. The house where Michalangelo lived part of his life has now been turned into a small but enchanting museum. Pitti, on the other hand, has some of the best collections in the world displayed in a regal palace overlooking the gardens of Boboli. I can almost guarantee you ll want to spend hours there, and the best news is the crowds are (usually) much fewer than those that flood the Uffizi. 2 CHRISTIE S TRAVEL ABERCROMBIE & KENT CHRISTIE S TRAVEL ABERCROMBIE & KENT 3
3 DAY 1 On arrival in Florence a member of the A&K team will meet you at the airport and drive you by private car to your hotel in the centre of the city. The rest of the day is yours to find your Florentine feet. We will provide you with tickets to the National Museum of Bargello, a landmark building that dates back to 1255 and one of the oldest structures in Florence. The Bargello is home to some of Florence s finest sculptures from the 14th and 16th centuries, including four masterpieces by Michelangelo: Bacchus, Madonna with Child, Brutus and David-Apollo, as well as Donatello s David and the two panels entered by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi for the infamous Baptistery door competition of In short, the Bargello boasts some of Florence s greatest sculptures, and provides a perfect introduction to the city and its history. This evening you will meet your fellow art lovers for welcome drinks and dinner. MEALS: D DAY 2 Florence is a compact city of cobbled streets and hidden piazzas, all of which tell a story of historic daily life, and the best way to explore is on foot. Today, accompanied by a private expert guide, we will delve deep into the city for a walking tour of some of the major sights that form the backbone of Florence s history. Our first stop is Galleria dell Academia. Founded in 1563, the Academy was the first school in Europe established specifically to teach the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture, and in 1784 an art collection was formed so that students could copy the works. These masterpieces form the collection that is in place today, which includes several sculptures by Michelangelo including The Prisoners, St. Matthew and perhaps his most influential work, David. We ll continue with our guide to the 13th century Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, where we ll have exclusive access to the Chapel of the Artists and the Giambologna Chapel which houses all of the Basilica s works of art. Today both the Giambologna Chapel and the works it holds are in dire need of restoration, and a small team of art restorers will be on hand to show us how they are steadily bringing the work back to its former glory. After lunch our guide will take us into the heart of Florence: the Duomo. This famous landmark looms high above the city and those who are feeling fit can climb the 463 steps of the dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, to be rewarded with a bird s eye view of the terracotta rooftops and beyond. The climb takes us into the interior of the dome, allowing us to see Giorgio Vasari s frescoes of the Last Judgment up close. Later this afternoon we ll visit the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, a global leader in the field of art restoration, before a well-deserved cheese and wine tasting at a local enoteca, Alessi, with the owner, Giorgio Alessi. The enoteca is a piece of art in itself, with ancient vaults holding a wide selection of grappa, whiskey and cognac, while the antipasti selection is vast and deliciously fresh. MEALS: B, L 4 CHRISTIE S TRAVEL ABERCROMBIE & KENT CHRISTIE S TRAVEL ABERCROMBIE & KENT 5
4 DAY 4 Today we ll experience two highlights of Tuscany: the Uffizi Gallery, one of the world s most famous museums, and the bucolic Chianti countryside. After breakfast we ll start with a visit to the infamous Uffizi Gallery. Literally translating as office, it was once home to the Florentine magistrates. Today it holds the Medici s art collections, including paintings such as Carravagio s Medusa, Botticelli s Birth of Venus, Leonardo da Vinci s Annunciation and Raphael s Madonna of the Goldfinch. After you have viewed these masterpieces, we ll continue to the Palazzo Vecchio, which was the main residence of the Medici family, and the famous Vasari Corridor. In 1564 Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici commissioned the renowned artist and architect Giorgio Vasari to design a passageway between the Palazzo Vecchio and Pitti Palace, allowing him to move freely between his residence and the government palace, and more importantly without being seen by the public. We ll have exclusive access to parts of the corridor not normally open to the public, passing the Boboli Gardens and the self-portrait section of the Uffizi Gallery, all ahead of the crowds. DAY 3 This morning we ll be joined by Christie s expert Marco Riccomini, an authority on the Pitti Palace, which is the focus of this morning s tour. Once the residence of the infamous Medici s, the Pitti Palace is one of the city s most complex examples of Renaissance architecture and home to several museums, including the Palatine Gallery and Silver Museum. The former is adorned with perhaps the most important pieces in the palace, including works by Raphael, Titian, Correggio, Rubens and Pietro da Cortona, while The Silver Museum contains an eclectic collection of precious objects such as gems, cameos, semi-precious stones, ivory, jewels and silver that give an insight into the sumptuous life of the princes. Marco will be on hand throughout to share his specialist knowledge. After lunch overlooking the Arno River we ll continue to Michelangelo s burial place in the impressive Church of Santa Croce. Here he lies alongside many other famous Florentines including Machiavelli and Galileo, and it s fitting that afterwards we ll continue to Casa Buonarroti, where we ll be treated to a private viewing of Michelangelo s drawings, not usually available for public viewing. Once owned by Michelangelo, the property was passed down through generations until his great nephew turned it into a museum dedicated to the artist. Aside from the drawings, the collection includes two of Michelangelo s earliest sculptures, the Madonna of the Steps and the Battle of the Centaurs. Before venturing back to the hotel we ll be treated to a private tasting and lesson on ice-cream making at Venchi, a renowned gelateria in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo. After walking in the footsteps of the Medici Royal Court it s time to head into the country to the Chianti region, characterised by its rolling hills and vineyards. We ll sample typical Tuscan delights for lunch before visiting Corsini s Villa and the complex network of cellars where we ll be able to undertake a private wine tasting. The estate also houses the family s archives which we ll have the chance to view, giving an insight into this historical Florentine family. We ll return to Florence in the evening for a farewell dinner at Alle Murate, which is just as much a museum as a restaurant, savouring the traditional Tuscan delights underneath the frescoes of famous Florentine heroes, soldiers and poets, including the earliest known portrait of Dante. MEALS: B,L,D DAY 5 Our last morning is left free for you to explore the city at your own pace. We have arranged entrance to the San Lorenzo Church should you wish to visit, where all of the principal members of the Medici family are buried. Highlights include the colourful Chapel of the Princes and the New Sacristy containing four statues by Michelangelo: Dawn and Dusk and Night and Day. After a final chance to explore the city you will be driven by private car to the airport for your return flight home.
