Work Lamps may not be used while driving (on public roads), but rather only when the vehicle is at a standstill, e.g. for loading and unloading. An exception is vehicles used for building, street cleaning or refuse collection, if the trip is part of the working process. Work Lamps may then be switched on only if they do not dazzle other road-users. It must be possible to switch on Work Lamps independently of all other headlights or lights, e.g. electrical connection together with the back-up light is not permitted. There are no special regulations in relation to approval, e.g. in accordance with ECE or SAE, because, when driving, Work Lamps may be used only off public roads. 3

4 Four technologies compared Halogen H3 Halogen H9 Why does Hella offer four types of technology for its Work Lamps? So that every user can realize an optimum price-performance ratio for his or her specific type of use. The four comparative photos show, by way of example, which illumination and light colors can be achieved with the different technologies. Further decision criteria are the work area to be illuminated and the position on the vehicle. Hella shows specific recommendations in the following pages. 6 Information on lighting technology LED Work Lamps using LEDs are completely maintenance-free. The latest generation achieve light outputs similar to Xenon Work Lamps. The color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin is very similar to daylight. People working in such lighting conditions stay alert for longer. The selection of the LEDs, their current feed and the thermal management of the Work Lamp are essential factors in achieving optimum light output (lumen). The quality of the components used by Hella ensures, for example, that the light output is constantly bright even at higher ambient temperatures. All of the advantages of modern LED lighting technology are implemented by Hella in an optimum manner. 2. LED manufacturers always state light outputs which are based on a very low l t f d ith t th i fl k 4. The lumen specifications of Hella Work Lamps are always based on photometrically determined values. They correspond to the light that actually comes out of the Work Lamp - measured lumen (lm). 5. The reduction of the LED light output arises mainly through the influence of temperature. Only good thermal management of the Work Lamp ensures the long service life of the LED. During product development, Hella uses stateof-the-art simulation programs, in order to ensure optimum heat dissipation results from the housing design. Hella LED Work Lamps are equipped with a thermal sensor which reliably protects the LEDs from overheating. Only in this way is the extremely long service life achieved.

7 Xenon Halogen Hella Xenon Work Lamps make use of the advantages of Xenon lighting technology. The result is visible performance advantages in comparison with Halogen Work Lamps. 8 Angle of inclination The job of the Work Lamp is to illuminate a certain work area. In order for it to do this in the best way, five questions have to be answered: 1. Where is light needed? Here, a distinction is made between closerange illumination, long-range illumination and off-road illumination. 2. How intense should the light be? Here, the technologies H3, H9, Xenon and LED come into play. 3. How long and how bright should the luminous cone be? This is the reason there are different types of Work Lamps. 4. Where can the Work Lamps be mounted? 5. At what angle of inclination will the Work Lamps be mounted? When answering the first four questions and selecting the Work Lamp, help can be found in the sections subdivided according to user groups. The illustration on this page makes answering question five easier. Here, by way of example, we show what effects different angle of inclinations have on the projection of the luminous cone. 8

9 13 3 Tips The angle of inclination is measured at the mounting point of the Work Lamp, below the horizontal. Large angle of inclination: The luminous cone is closer to the vehicle. The larger the angle of inclination, the more intense the light is in the center or at the start of the luminous cone. Small angle of inclination: The luminous cone shines into the distance. The smaller the angle of inclination, the larger the luminous cone becomes in the distance. By combining several, even different, Work Lamps, customized illumination of the surrounding area can be achieved. 9

11 The Value of Hella Work Lamps Hella knows that in practical use, Work Lamps are exposed to harsh conditions. Therefore, during development and also during manufacture (!), all types of Work Lamp are specifically tested to meet the high Hella quality demands. To start with, there are two tests to determine and check compliance with the IP protective rating. The splash-water test reveals how a Work Lamp withstands rain, splash water, silt and the high-pressure cleaner. To do so, the Work Lamp is constantly sprayed with water as if from a high-pressure cleaner, in a closed chamber. The purpose of the dust-protection test is to test to what extent a Work Lamp is protected from the penetration of foreign solid bodies, including dust. To do this, the test sample is exposed for a certain time, in a chamber, to a flow consisting of an air/ dust mixture. There are then three further stages to this tortuous testing. Two-part heat test: Part 1 is the 24-hour test. Over this period, the Work Lamp remains switched on constantly. In the second part, the Work Lamp is subsequently exposed to a temperature of 50 C for a period of one hour. A value which can quickly be reached in summer use. Shake test and vibration test: Here, the behavior of the Work Lamp during driving is simulated. Work Lamps that pass this test always illuminate correctly. Fogging test: In the fogging test, Hella tests how the Work Lamp handles moisture penetration. If the fogging disappears in a specified short unit of time, the Work Lamp is operating correctly. GGVSEB and IP protective categories: GGVSEB means hazardous-goods directive for roads. Work Lamps marked are approved for mounting to transportation equipment which meets the regulations of the GGVSEB/ADR B Rn and Rn for electrical alignment. IP protective categories provide known standards when purchasing. How well is a product protected from the environmental influences Work Lamps are exposed to e.g. dust and water? The IP protective category states how resistant the product is. The classes are determined in accordance with DIN Part 9. In the case of Hella Work Lamps, these protective ratings are used: Protective category IP 5K4K Dust may only penetrate to such an extent that function and safety are not impaired. Water that sprays against the housing from every direction under increased pressure must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 4 bar. Protective category IP 5K9K Dust may only penetrate to such an extent that function and safety are not impaired. Water that is directed against the housing during high- pressure/steam-jet cleaning must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 80 bar. Protective category IP 6K4K Dust must not penetrate. Water that sprays against the housing from every direction under increased pressure must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 4 bar. Protective category IP 6K7 Dust must not penetrate. Even in the event of temporary submersion, no water may penetrate. Protective category IP 6K9K Dust must not penetrate. Water that is directed against the housing during high pressure/steam-jet cleaning must not have any damaging effect; water pressure approx. 80 bar. 11
