3 Introduction Welcome to the new edition of our Coach Education and Training booklet spanning October November This resource will provide your club or team with the relevant information regarding training opportunities over the coming months. Following recent club engagement sessions, we have added a couple of our own workshops, Funding, Nutrition and Fitness; to provide a greater range of generic CPD workshops. We also highlight the range of Sports Specific courses that can be delivered by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Cultures Sports Specific Development Officers and Active Schools Coordinators. We trust you will find a course that will benefit your club. If however there is something you wish to discuss re the workshops, or add value, please contact us. Community Sports Hubs Most of the courses or workshops are scheduled to take place mainly in or near one of the many hubs (where practical), where we will endeavour to work with clubs to meet their coaching/cpd needs and could include athletics, football, rugby, netball and other if requested, as well as Emergency First Aid, Sports Coach UK courses. Please take time to look through the brochure. If you find a course that will benefit you, and therefore your club, simply follow the instructions below. Funding Support You may be eligible for support funding through your Local sports council - The main criteria for sports council funding, is that you are resident and attached to a club from the relevant area (below): Club SL*. 4 How to book All courses administered by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture are book and pay. These courses must be paid at time of booking (prior to course commencing). Bookings and more information South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Cancellations/refunds Please be advised that refunds will not be given if course cancelled within 7 days of it taking place. Likewise, courses booked within 7 days of the course taking place will be non refundable. 5 Child Protection Workshops Safeguarding and Protecting Children. This sports coach UK workshop meets the same learning outcomes as the original Good Practice and Child Protection workshop. Therefore, despite this revision to the content and change of title, previous attendance on a Good Practice and Child Protection workshop will still be valid. When coaches are required to update their certificate of attendance, they will attend the new Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop. There is no need to undertake the new workshop immediately as a result of this change. Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching, and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. 6 Children 1st In Safe Hands Child Protection Officer Training This 3 hour workshop helps clubs to put child protection policies into practice. It is most suitable for those acting as the club Child Protection Officer, but is also relevant for those responsible for managing or organising the club. 7 First Aid courses Basic First Aid This course aims to provide you with basic first aid knowledge of CPR, heart attack, stroke, head injury and more. This course will also have sports injury content including strains/ sprains broken bones and cuts/grazes. 8 Sports Nutrition This workshop will cover the basics of nutrition and a balanced diet and how we derive energy from food, the function of nutrients and how they are used for health and physical activity. It will also look at the importance of fluid replacement and food choices for exercising. 10 Performance Psychology workshops for Coaches New to our course on offer, it is recognised that the psychology of the athlete and the coach will play a key role in performance, coaches consistently ask for more information, and is becoming more relevant to developing not just athletes, but adding knowledge to the coaches tool box. All these sessions are 2.5 hours in duration. Motivation and Communication This is an interactive workshop that will help develop your communication skills and enhance athletes performance through positive language. Additionally, this workshop will help you develop your non verbal communication skills so your day-to-day coaching sessions will improve. This workshop is also aimed to increase your awareness of motivation and also to give you tools to motivate others. You will: be aware of communication and understand the barriers of communicating in sport have developed your own communication skills and be able to use them effectively in any coaching session be aware of and understand both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation be able to develop ways to enhance athletes motivation levels Team Building This is an interactive workshop that will help you build cohesion within your team through giving you the understanding of a team s stages of development, and specific goal setting techniques. This workshop will give you the skills to enhance team cohesion by giving you different tools and techniques. 10
11 You will: be aware of team cohesion and understand the stages of team development develop skills to conduct goal setting with team and athlete identify strengths and weaknesses of your team gain activities to help build team spirit Confidence Building and Anxiety Control This is an interactive workshop that will help you build athletes self confidence through gaining a greater understanding of self esteem and self confidence. You will gain understanding about anxiety, and how we can use it to enhance our performance. This workshop will give you skills to build confidence of others, and helping them with anxiety control. You will: be aware of self esteem and self confidence and how these can affect our athletes share ideas on ways to build confidence and self esteem identify sources of confidence and anxiety Be the Best Leader You Can Be This is an interactive workshop will give you a greater understanding of your strengths and weaknesses as a leader, and how to develop your current skills. This workshop will give you ways to self evaluate your leadership skills through practical tools, and understanding of leadership theory. 12 Sports Coach UK workshops sportscotland and Sports Coach UK have a range of suitable CPD workshops that are designed to support coaches and volunteers with clubs and covering a range of subjects. North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture are committed to working together to provide support to their club volunteer coaches and administrators that operating throughout Lanarkshire and provide the best available workshops. Below are the workshops that are currently available. These course are priced at 25 per person. * A Guide to Mentoring Sports Coaches: Mentoring is a powerful tool in education and development of sports coaches at all levels. This workshop will help you as a mentor to support coaches learning and focus on how learning occurs. Analysing your Coaching: Discover methods of analysing your own coaching performance and identify areas for development. Learn how to develop and implement an action plan to enhance your coaching. Equity in your Coaching: Explains what sports equity means and how to identify and challenge inequitable behavior. Shows how equity can enhance coaching and what is the appropriate language and terminology to use. Disability Inclusion Training This course aims to provide practical ideas on how to include young people within your sporting sessions that have a disability. Teachers attending this course will on completion will receive 1 credit at level 6 for the SCQF (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework). How to Coach Disabled People in Sport: Develop your coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled people in sport. Determine how to include disabled people in sport by selecting appropriate coaching activities and creating effective coaching environments. 12 Continued overleaf.
13 Coaching Disabled Performers: Develop your coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled performers through inclusive and separate coaching sessions. Discover new ways to adapt equipment and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your performer s needs. Coaching Children and Young People: Discover the needs and motivation of young performers. Learn how to deliver effective coaching sessions to meet the level of skill, developmental stage and motivation of each young performer. 14 Sports Specific Coach Education South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, supports a wide range of volunteer coaches across the wide range of sports and activities throughout Lanarkshire. There are a number of officers that can deliver courses as well contact we have with most Sports Governing bodies to meet interest / demand - if the courses can t be delivered by our own officers, we will work with the those organisations and other partners to deliver. The following pages provide a list of sports where coach education can be arranged based on demand. If your club or organisation requires or interested in any of these courses, or indeed any coach education issue, we can work with you to arrange course(s) that is suitable for your club. 15 2. Level Coaching Young Footballers This 12-hour (2 x 6 hours) course is designed to assist coaches with the planning, preparation, organisation and evaluation of their coaching sessions. 17 Netball Netball Leaders Award The Netball Leaders Award is a 2 hour workshop for 14 years+ something that Netball Scotland Education team have been working on in order to assist senior pupils and Community Leaders to organise safe, enjoyable and purposeful, development activities for primary school aged children. Together we can help prepare young people for their progression into coaching while working in partnership with local and feeder primary schools to coach young school children the skills required to play netball. This award has been designed to provide an introduction into group games and the focus is on the development of the fundamental skills. Getting Started Getting started is a 6 hour (alternative 2 x 3 hours) workshop. This new award built around the Fun 5z game. It provides the very first step on the coaching ladder for anyone interested in getting started in netball coaching. The award focuses on skill acquisition through the Fundamentals of Netball and builds in netball specific skills and the basics of attacking, defending and shooting. 18 Rugby 1. Rugby Ready - Getting Started Getting started as a coach - what you need to do to first IRB Rugby Ready Online Course With an emphasis on safety, Rugby Ready is an excellent online resource that you can register to use for free. This course is now a minimum requirement for any coach or teacher in Scotland (at every level) and covers correct technique, physical preparation, injury prevention and injury management. Rugby Ready Practical (mini course = 2hrs, adult/youth course = 3hrs) The Rugby Ready Practical courses aim to increase awareness of all aspects of safety in the game. The course is a minimum standard for all coaches and teachers in Scotland. Candidates must be aged 16 or over. 2. UKCC Level 1 Rugby The UKCC Level 1 in Coaching (Rugby Union) is a practical-based course, taught over two days and one evening. It includes opportunities to coach and develop your coaching. The overall aim of this course is to enable you to coach players under some direction, for example from a head coach or coaching co-ordinator. Coaches applying for the UKCC level 1 course must have attended the mandatory Rugby Ready annual practical course. Is the UKCC Level 1 suitable for me? Due to the focus of the course being your coaching delivery skills (how you coach), Scottish Rugby recommends that every coach commences their qualifications at UKCC Level 1. Qualified PE teachers who have attended the mandatory Rugby Ready practical course and possess relevant rugby coaching experience can progress directly to UKCC level 2. 18
19 3. UKCC Level 2 Rugby The aim of the UKCC Level 2 course is to enable you to prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions to a group of players, as a club coach or teacher. It is a four-day course, taking place over two months and features a mixture of practical-based exercises and home study tasks. Is the UKCC Level 2 suitable for me? To qualify for entry to level 2, candidates must possess a UKCC Level 1 Certificate in coaching Rugby Union or be a qualified PE teacher with an appropriate rugby background. Candidates should demonstrate an involvement with the coaching or teaching of rugby and attendance at coaching seminars, courses or conferences. Please complete the simple self-assessment (below) to check that you are ready for Level 2. Only active coaches will be accepted for a Level 2 course. 20 Swimming UKCC Level 1 Swimming Teaching Aquatics The Level 1 Certificate for Teaching Aquatics is an all inclusive qualification that sits as the first formally assessed qualification on the teaching qualifications pathway. Unit 1 is a common unit to all of the aquatic strands (Teaching Aquatics, Swimming Coaching, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and Water Polo) and has a focus on the how to coach skills with the technical emphasis on movement literacy (as defined by the Long Term Athlete Development framework for swimming). It is envisaged that this unit can be delivered to all teachers/coaches who wish to work in the aquatic environment. Unit 2 has a focus on teaching aquatics; technical knowledge and practical skills that will allow the Coach to fulfil the following Role Descriptor. Role Descriptor Once qualified the holder of the Level 1 Certificate for Aquatic Teaching is able to actively support a more senior qualified /licensed aquatic teacher at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session. This person will be expected to have an understanding of the aquatic and a basic understanding of appropriate correction to common aquatic faults. 20
21 UKCC Level 2 Swimming Teaching Aquatics The Level 2 Certificate for Teaching Aquatics is an all inclusive qualification and sits as the second formally assessed qualification on the teaching qualifications pathway. Units 1-3 are common units to all of the Aquatic Strands (Aquatic Teaching, Diving, Swimming Coaching, Synchronised Swimming and Water Polo) and has a focus on how to teach/coach skills. It is envisaged that Units 1, 2 and 3 can be delivered to all teachers/coaches who wish to work in the aquatic environment. 22 Walking / Cycling 1. Walk Leaders Training This is a one-day course delivered locally. It is aimed primarily at volunteers who are leading health walks for the general public. The course provides practical advice on how to lead a walk safely and effectively and how to motivate people. By the end of the training day, participants will be able to: Relate their local health walk project to the national perspective - Paths to Health. Outline the main benefits to be gained from a programme of regular walking. Recognise the main barriers faced by people in participating in a programme of regular walking. Explain the current recommended amount and type of physical activity for health benefits. Explain the concept of a health walk and its components. Outline the roles and responsibilities of a Walk Leader. Recognise potential hazards on a health walk. 2. Cycle Leaders This one day course is aimed at those who are interested in volunteering and leading groups through a variety of rides, on pre-planned risk assessed route, within their local area, usually as part of a larger project. Such training programmes are likely to be aimed at adults and the emphasis may be on those returning to cycling, those who want to be more active, health focused, interested in volunteering or merely to highlight the range of rides available locally. Rides will be easy to moderate in terms of both physical and technical difficulty, with a range of rides suited to your client group available through your local project. The aim of this programme is to encourage adults to make more use of their bikes. It is not designed to be an instructional programme.
