The Mediterranean Sea bathes its shore and the Malaga Mountains surround it, forming a mountainous barrier that defends it from the cold, characterising its climate with mild temperatures due to the sea acting as a thermal regulator. Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. It has been declared a Historic Site, as few cities in the world can claim to have so many layers of footprints from previous civilizations from across the centuries. Phoenician ruins, Punic ruins, Roman and Arab ruins, etc, have converted the centre of the city into an authentic historical palimpsest in which we can find monuments such as the Roman theatre, the Alcazaba, the Cathedral, the Aduana, Jewish quarter as well as a rich archaeological heritage. Today, Malaga is a modern city while still maintaining its special character. As a cosmopolitan city, Malaga still retains its cosy feel despite the large influence that foreign tourism in the Costa del Sol has had on other cities and towns along the coast.
