2 MASTER OF DESIGN COURSE INFORMATION KEY INFORMATION Course codes C04243 Course length 1.5 years full-time or 3 years part-time. Fees Local students are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place, meaning fees are subsided by the Australian Government and the contribution can be deferred using FEE-HELP. Additional application requirements also required, more information at: find-a-course/courses/c04243 Unique in Australia, the Master of Design is intellectually vibrant, socially engaging, visionary, practice-focused and industry oriented. The course centres on building a design community network and has two main components: specialised studios addressing areas of emerging design practice; and theory and technology subjects taught across the program. COLLABORATE WITH DESIGN THINKING SPECIALISTS The program focuses on and integrates research, internationalisation and a design culture through the delivery of specialist, core and transdisciplinary subjects. It provides a postgraduate education that is flexible in both its practice orientation and research integration. It enables students to explore design issues under the supervision of a practice leader, to learn new strategies and the application of research and theory. It supports best practices in postgraduate design education through learning and research strategies that critically examine design practice. EXPLORATION AND EXPERIMENTATION IN PROFESSIONAL STUDIO SETTINGS With a focus on design evolution, innovative integration of new technologies, practice and student experimentation, this Master of Design is delivered by experienced studio leaders who are acknowledged leaders in their specific industries and professions. Designed to produce a balance between high levels of specialisation and lateral thinking, the program enables students to examine design from a transdisciplinary perspective. Graduates of this course are known leaders in design and related industries through their expertise in product and service development. They are able to utilise strategic processes, creative tools and research skills for innovation in design.

3 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT For her major project Laura Jade Hindes was keen to explore the area of science visualisation and demonstrate how design allows scientists to see patterns and findings in a new light. Developed in conjunction with programmer Sam Gentle and neuroscientist Peter Simpson-Young, The Brain Light Project is a large sculpture of the brain that turns raw brainwave data into digestible and even playful, interactive visualisations to provide a real-time display of brain activity. I ve always been fascinated with how art and science blend together; I feel as though both require very similar thinking and historically both disciplines had been intertwined. But then things changed and there was less collaboration between science and art so I m thrilled to be part of the movement that seems to be making a comeback, said Laura. The sculpture which is made of acrylic, features filaments lined with multi-coloured LED lights edging the large piece. Once a user places an EEG headset on, the sculpture lights up according to mood and movement to provide an accurate register of brain activity. I wanted the piece to be a replica of an actual brain so I teamed up with a neuroscientist who was really interested in unlocking the true potential of mind through technology, to guide me through the project. Together we then found a software developer looking for a creative project; the three of us learnt a lot about each other s respective fields during the whole process so it was true merging of multiple disciplines, continued Laura. The sculpture has recently featured in exhibitions at the Australian Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and the Museum of Contemporary Art. 5 UTS: MASTER OF DESIGN Critically examine design practice under the supervision of a studio leader in: Advanced Animation Interaction Lighting Product Design Service Innovation and Change Spatial Design Textiles Visual Design COVER IMAGE: KALEIDOSCOPE Kaleidoscope creates portals of infinite space by manipulating perspective with light and mirrors. Merging the ideas of an infinity mirror with an infinity room, the viewer is taken on a journey of a never ending space. The design incorporates four elements that create the dynamic visual: the viewer being submerged into the blackness of the shipping container, the mirrored slanted walls that create a triangular room, the inter-reflections between the rooms themselves and finally, the backlit, dichroic, three dimensional screens in the floor and ceiling to create the kaleidoscope through the infinity space. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Stephanie Shehata is a recent graduate of the UTS Master of Design in Lighting Design having previously completed Bachelor of Design in Interior Design/ Bachelor Arts in International Studies, also at UTS. Her production of design solutions are based on a balance of function, value and aesthetics while also bridging the gap between the physical environment, behaviour and the being in space. stephanie.shehata@gmail.com Erin Slaviero graduated from the UTS Master of Design in Lighting Design in She believes that light is a crucial link for creating a spatial interaction between people and their environment. To her, light is an experience that generates and controls the way we feel and interact with the world around us.
