4 photo: Richard Jansen photo: Richard Jansen Public Library Amsterdam Oosterdokskade DL Amsterdam The Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings on the restructured Oosterdokseiland, near the Central Station The main shape of the building is attuned to the surroundings: both the apartments to the west of the library and the street to the eastmust receive enough daylight At the same time, situated as it is beside the open waters of the Oosterdok, the library had to contribute to an attractive skyline A raised plinth offers a refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors, and the reading and study rooms resemble terraces, arranged around large voids The top floor accommodates the library theatre and conference rooms Project is public! m² Jo Coenen City of Amsterdam Naomi photo: Richard Jansen Every day from 1000 to 2200 h From the Central Train station in Amsterdam, it's about 5 min walking For more information on the developments of this Island, take a look at 4

8 Beurs van Berlage Damrak ZJ Amsterdam The Beurs van Berlage (stock exchange of Berlage) is a milestone in the history of modern architecture It is build in the same period as Amsterdam s Centraal Station and the State Museum, but what is really special about the Beurs, however, is that 80% of it is authentic The Beurs van Berlage was built by Hendrik Petrus Berlage ( ) for the Municipality of Amsterdam to accommodate all forms of stock trading Construction started in 1898 and was completed in 1903 It was Berlage s first really large commission and it would make him world famous The building was constructed on a reclaimed tract of land alongside the Amstel river, where trading ships used to moor photo: Fernando Miguel García Martín Project is public! 1903 Hendrik Petrus Berlage Cafe opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 10-18h Sunday: 11-18h Tel: (0) , Beurs van Berlage Café: (0) In the Main Hall of the Beurs van Berlage exhibitions are hosted on a regular basis For an overview of current and coming exhibitions see their website Take a train, tram or bus to Amsterdam Centraal Station Follow the signs to the Centrum exit and walk towards Dam Square (southern direction) On your lefthandside you can already see the Beurs van Berlage, a large orange-brick building with several towers etc 8
