1 REGULATIONS GOVERNING ONEYEAR TWO SEMESTER MASTER DEGREE PROGRAMME IN EDUCATION (M.ED.) 1. TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT: (Framed under Sec. 44 (1) of KSU Act. 2000) i) These regulations shall be called the regulations governing the Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree Programme. ii) These regulations shall come into force from the date of assent of the Chancellor. 2. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION: 2.1 Candidates who have passed the B.Ed. Degree Examination of Mangalore University or the B.Ed. (Regular or Distance or Special Education) of any other University and B.A.Ed./B.Sc. Ed., recognized by the NCTE and considered as equivalent thereto by the Mangalore University, with 55 percent marks (50 percent in the case of SC and ST) are eligible for admission to the programme. However, in the case of in-service teachers a relaxation of 5 percent marks shall be provided, if they have put in at least three years of service as certified by the D.D.P.I. of the concerned region. 3. DURATION OF THE PROGRAMMME: 3.1 The duration of the programme shall extend over two Semesters of eighteen weeks each. (one academic year) including instruction and examination. 3.2 Maximum period for the Completion of the Programme: The candidates shall complete the programme within three years from the date of admission. The term completing the programme means passing all the prescribed examinations of the programme to become eligible for the degree. No candidates shall be permitted to appear for the examinations after the prescribed period for completing the programme. 4. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: 4.1 The medium of instruction shall be English. A candidate may be permitted to write the Examination either in English or in Kannada. 5. HOURS OF INSTRUCTION PER WEEK: 5.1 There shall be 28 to 34 hours of Instruction per week including field work and supervision of B.Ed. internship programme in schools.
2 6. ATTENDANCE: 6.1 Each paper shall be treated as an independent unit for the purpose of attendance. A student shall attend a minimum of 75% of the total instruction hours in a particular paper. There shall be no provision for condonation of shortage of attendance and a student who has fallen short of attendance in a paper shall be required to repeat that Semester. 7. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION: There shall be a University Examination at the end of each Semester. First Semester: Code No. Subject Hours of Exam. Educational Measurement and Evaluation 9. Social Psychology and Group Dynamics 10. Any other Subject approved by the Academic Council.

Any other Subject approved by the Academic Council. 2. A Grade (A,B,C,D,E) for Internship in Teaching will be provided to the students for the following components using suitable scales: - Supervision with Feedback of Twenty B.Ed./D.Ed. Micro Lessons/Classroom Lessons/Innovative Lessons; - Discussion with Faculty on Lessons Observed; - Reports on Observation and Feedback of the Twenty Lessons. 8. VALUATION OF ANSWER SCRIPTS: 8.1 Each written paper shall be valued by one Internal and one External Examiner. 8.2 If the difference in marks between the two valuers is more than 20% of the maximum marks the Registrar (Evaluation) shall check the entries and the total marks assigned by the two valuers. If there is any mistake in totalling it shall be rectified. While checking the total if it is observed that any one or more of the answers is not valued by one of the Valuers the Registrar (Evaluation) shall advise the Internal Members of the Board of Examiners to value that Paper. After receiving the marks the Registrar (Evaluation) shall make necessary corrections. Despite all these
4 corrections if the difference between the two valuers is still more than 20% the Registrar (Evaluation) shall refer such answer scripts to the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for arranging the third Valuation by Examiners from among the approved panel of Examiners. 8.3 In all cases involving either two or three valuations, the average of the valuation shall be taken for declaring the results. 9. INTERNAL ASSESSMENT: The marks of internal assessment shall be awarded on the basis of class tests, seminars and assignments. The internal assessment marks shall be published on the notice board of the College. The internal assessment marks shall be communicated to the Registrar (Evaluation) fifteen days before the commencement of the University Examination who shall also have access to the records of such internal assessment evaluation. 10. REGISTRATION FOR THE EXAMINATION: A candidate shall register for all the Papers of a Semester when he/she appears for the examination of that Semester for the first time. 11. MINIMUM FOR A PASS: 11.1 No candidate shall be declared to have passed a Semester unless he/she secures not less than 40% marks in each of the theory papers, 45% marks in the aggregate of theory and internal assessment for each paper and 50% marks in the aggregate of a Semester A candidate who fails to secure the minimum pass marks as above and has failed in a Semester may be exempted from appearing for the examination in the paper/s in which he/she has secured 50% and above. Such candidates shall secure 50% marks in the failed papers in their subsequent appearance. 12. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES: 12.1 Successful Candidates shall be placed in Distinction, First Class and Second Class as the case may be at the end of the Second Semester based on the aggregate marks of the Two Semester examinations in the first attempt. the repeater candidates are not eligible for any class or rank. Distinction : not less than 70% of the aggregate marks First class : 60% and less than 70% marks Second class : 50% and less than 60% marks Pass class : other successful repeater candidates
5 13. REJECTION OF RESULTS: 13.1 A candidate may be permitted to reject the results of the whole examination of any Semester. The rejection of results Paper-wise/Subjectwise shall not be permitted. A Candidate who has rejected the result shall appear for the subsequent examination that follows The rejection shall be exercised only once in each Semester and the rejection once exercised cannot be revoked Application for rejection of results along with the payment of the Prescribed Fee shall be submitted to the Registrar (Evaluation) through the college of study together with the original Statement of Marks within 30 days from the date of Publication of Results. 14. CARRY OVER PROVISION: 14.1 A candidate who fails in the first semester will be permitted to go to second semester and keep term. (Approved by the Chancellor on as communicated in Government letter No. ED 26 UDS 2004 dtd and notified under Notification No. MU/ ACC/ CR27/ /A2, dated ) Sd/- Registrar
