1 STATUTE A4 DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS (EDUCATION) 1. The period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education) is four academic years. 2. On admission to the course of the Bachelor of Arts (Education), a candidate for the degree may opt for the general track or the specialisation track, the latter in the subjects of Art, Chinese Language and Literature, Malay Language and Literature and Music. 3. The degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education) for general, Art, Chinese Language and Literature and Music tracks are for Primary specialisation based on one academic subject. 4. The degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education), Malay Language and Literature course is for Secondary specialisation based on two subjects, Malay Language and Malay Literature. 5. During the period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education), a candidate for the degree must pursue such courses of study as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the National Institute of Education. 6. (1) (a) For candidates admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education), the minimum number of academic units candidates must obtain for successful completion of the course is as follows: For Primary (General) (with Academic subjects 129 other than English Language and Literature) For Primary (General) (with Academic subject in 135 English Language and Literature) For Primary (Art specialisation) 135 For Primary (Chinese Language Specialisation) 135 For Primary (Music Specialisation) 135 (b) For Secondary (Malay Language and Literature 130 Specialisation) (2) passed in all essential modules, core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives and general electives as determined by the National Institute of Education; (3) fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. 1

2 7. No candidate shall be permitted to take more than seven years or less than three and half years to complete the prescribed course of study for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education). For non-graduate candidates with professional teaching qualification admitted to the degree course, the maximum and minimum periods shall be five years and two years respectively. For candidates from the National University of Singapore who cross over at the end of their second year and admitted to the degree course in Malay Language and Literature specialisation, the maximum and minimum periods shall be five and two years respectively. 8. A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education) who in the course of study for the degree, has passed all the core modules and fulfilled the requirements for the prescribed electives and general electives required for the Diploma in Education or Diploma in Physical Education but fails to complete or for any reason does not continue with the course may, on the recommendation of the Dean of Foundation Programmes, be awarded a Diploma in Education or Diploma in physical Education (as the case may be) by the Board of Studies of the National Institute of Education. 9. The Academic Board may make regulations prescribing the form and scope of examinations and the admissions of candidates thereto. For this purpose, the Academic Board may, in its discretion, seek the views of the National Institute of Education. 10. The Academic Board may, on the recommendation of the National Institute of Education, grant such exemptions as it thinks fit from any of the requirements of this Statute. REGULATIONS MADE UNDER STATUTE A4 Course of Study 1. (1) The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education) primary specialisation comprises modules in the following seven groups. Group 1 - Academic Subject Group 2 - Education Studies Group 3 - Curriculum Studies Group 4 - Curriculum Content Group 5 - School-based teacher training (the Practicum) Group 6 - Essential Modules Group 7 - General Electives (2) With the approval of the Dean of Foundation Programmes, National Institute of Education, a student may offer modules from those in his preceding or subsequent year of study. (3) Each module will be assigned a certain number of academic units as may be determined by the National Institute of Education. (4) The distribution of modules for each semester will be determined by the National Institute of Education. 2

Each candidate for the degree for primary specialisation shall offer core modules and prescribed electives in one academic subject from Group 1 as well as core modules and prescribed electives in Groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. In addition, (a) each candidate shall offer at least 6 academic units ( 9 academic units in the case of a candidate specialising in Chinese Language and Literature) of general electives that can be chosen from any of the modules offered by the University, whether within or outside the Institute, with the approval of the Dean. (b) Group 2 comprises modules in - Education Studies (c) Group 3 comprises modules in the following - Teaching of Art Teaching of Chinese Language Teaching of English Language Teaching of Mathematics Teaching of Moral Education Teaching of Music Teaching of Science Teaching of Social Studies (d) Group 4 comprises curriculum content modules in - Art English Language Mathematics Moral Education Music Science Social Studies (e) (f) Group 5 comprises modules in the Practicum Group 6 comprises essential modules in the following; Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills Environmental Studies and Global Issues Critical Reading and Writing The Teacher and Society Multicultural Studies (g) Group 7 comprises general elective modules in Arts, Science, Education and Physical Education 3. (1) The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Education) in Malay Language and Literature (secondary specialisation) comprises modules in the following six groups. 3

4 Group 1-2 Academic Subjects Group 2 - Education Studies Group 3 - Curriculum Studies Group 4 - School-based teacher training (the Practicum) Group 5 - Essential Modules Group 6 - General Electives (2) With the approval of the Dean of Foundation Programmes, National Institute of Education, a student may offer modules from those in his preceding or subsequent year of study. Each candidate for the degree for secondary specialisation shall offer core modules and prescribed electives in two academic subjects from Group 1 as well as core modules and prescribed electives in Groups 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. In addition, (a) each candidate shall offer at least 12 academic units of general electives that can be chosen from any of the modules offered by the University, whether within or outside the Institute, with the approval of the Dean. (b) Group 1 comprises modules in Malay Language Malay Literature (c) Group 2 comprises modules in Education Studies (d) Group 3 comprises modules in the following Teaching of Malay Language Teaching of Malay Literature (e) (f) Group 5 comprises modules in the Practicum Group 6 comprises essential modules in the following: Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills Environmental Studies and Global Issues Critical Reading and Writing The Teacher and Society Multicultural Studies (g) Group 7 comprises general elective modules in Arts, Science, Education and Physical Education 4

Every candidate who has not passed the written component of the English Qualifying Test at the time of his admission to the National Institute of Education must offer and pass the subject Language Communication Skills before proceeding with the subject Critical Reading & Writing. In addition, a candidate who fails the oral component of the English Qualifying Test is required to offer and pass the subject Oral Communication Skills. 6. The Academic Board on the advice of the National Institute of Education shall have discretion to determine the syllabuses of subjects and the conditions under which a candidate may offer subjects. Examinations 7. (1) There shall be an examination towards the end of each semester in such subjects as may have been offered under Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 in the course of study as prescribed in regulation 2 of these Regulations. (2) Unless otherwise determined by the National Institute of Education, there shall be at least one paper for each of the subjects offered by the candidate. (3) The National Institute of Education shall have discretion to determine such forms of assessment of a candidate s work in the course of study as it thinks appropriate and the results of such assessments shall form part of the results of the examination. 8. The examination for the Practicum of the course of study shall be held at such times as may be determined by the examiners. 9. A candidate may proceed with the next stage of the course of study if he satisfies the requirements prescribed by the Academic Board. End of Statute A4 5
