2 WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Our goal is to enable you to meet the challenges and opportunities of an interconnected global economy, and we thrive on providing business education and training in an era of great economic and social change. With a uniquely Indigenous perspective, our education pathways are based on local and global knowledge, and encompass appropriate cultural business practices: that is, the way business is done in different countries and different cultures within countries. The past two years have been a period of expansion for us. We have opened new centres in Sydney and Melbourne, and grown our online student population. As of late-2014, we will be headquartered in purpose-built facilities in Darwin s Waterfront Precinct, establishing a distinct CBD hub for our learning community. Located in Darwin, Australia s northern-most capital city, makes the School of Business a natural connection point between Northern Australia and Southeast Asia. Our course offerings reflect this, with study exchanges to, and partnerships with, universities in Southeast Asia, and an incountry program in Timor-Leste. We also recognise the needs of Northern Australia-based smallto-medium-sized enterprises servicing both the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and offer upskilling and professional development courses tailored to business needs. At School of Business we offer a personalised education. As a dynamic regional university with smaller class sizes, excellent teachers and extensive support services, all our students get a level of attention that is hard to match. At School of Business, your success is our success. Professor Arthur Shulman Executive Director/Dean Charles Darwin University Business School

Territorians are also enjoying and benefiting from online learning and the variety of courses the School of Business has on offer. Casuarina campus The main CDU campus is at Casuarina, 14 km from Darwin city. A shuttle service runs between Casuarina campus and the Waterfront Business School. Students are required to satisfy CDU admission requirements, are enrolled as CDU students, follow the CDU curriculum and assessment, and graduate with a degree from CDU. Australian Technical and Management College 104 Franklin Street Melbourne, 3000 T: +61 (0) W: cdumelbourne.com I enrolled in a Bachelor of Accounting as an external, mature-aged student, after being away from study for nearly 30 years. I juggled study with full-time selfemployment on a cattle property and part-time work in my local town. The online materials were valuable for consolidation and I kept up with my studies through audio recordings of lectures and tutorials, which I listened to when I had time. On graduating, I received four academic awards including the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in the Bachelor of Accounting. These are very proud personal achievements. I now work as an Accounts Manager and am investigating further study options. Margaret Vetter School of Business Prospectus

9 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING COURSES The School of Business provides nationally accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses in business, finance, and training and assessment qualifications across a range of industries. These courses focus on developing practical skills, presenting an opportunity for individuals and organisations to learn, refresh and build upon existing knowledge. We offer a range of Certificate I IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma level qualifications in: Accounting Business administration Bookkeeping Business Human resources Management Marketing Work health and safety Project management Training and assessment Pathways All accredited VET training courses have pathways from Certificate and Diploma level to Higher Education courses. Business short courses The CDU team also develops tailored programs, nonaccredited training and short courses to meet industry needs. Training programs are delivered at CDU campuses, remote communities or in the workplace. The Simulated Centre Full-time students studying Certificate II IV in Business can develop their skills in a simulated business environment at the Crocodylus World Simulated Business Centre (CWSBC), run in partnership with Crocodylus Park at Berrimah, 13 km from central Darwin. The CWSBC provides students with the opportunity to learn and practise effective and innovative business practices in the areas of finance, administration, human resources, management, and sales and marketing in a simulated environment. Although no actual transfer of money or goods occurs, all other business planning, marketing and transactions take place. Students complete the required competencies in a practical manner and in addition learn decision-making, problem-solving and team participation skills. Contact E: businesstopend@cdu.edu.au T: +61 (0) W: cdu.edu.au/cdu-vet/business-service/businesstopend Note: As course details are always changing, refer to the website for the latest course information. I chose CDU because I wanted to study on campus, network and improve my English. I started with a Certificate IV in Business, which helped me get a full-time job, then did a Diploma in Human Resource Management part-time. After my diploma I enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce. I was at first concerned about moving from VET to Higher Ed, but I had a lot of support from lecturers, staff and fellow students. Fast forward to graduation and I was awarded the NT Government Medal for Commerce, and secured a traineeship in the NT Public Service. This proved to me that hard work and dedication don t go unnoticed. Winnie Liu School of Business Prospectus

12 HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS The School of Business programs advance knowledge and competencies to enable you to take advantage of the changing nature of work and society, and are designed to foster sustainable business practices. We offer undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees including Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Master degrees. All our programs are available on-campus, online and in mixed mode delivery. Undergraduate degrees Bachelor of Commerce (BCOMR); Bachelor of Accounting (BACC) These programs assume limited practical knowledge in entrepreneurship and business theory and prepare you for employment in new enterprises, for entry level management roles and for working with more experienced practitioners and clients. The BCOMR is designed for students who intend to become managers, and offers exposure to a wide range of management competencies. The BACC prepares students for professional accounting qualifications. Students with satisfactory progress can move from the Bachelor of Accounting to the Bachelor of Commerce without any penalty. Postgraduate degrees Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma programs These programs assume prior exposure to the particular knowledge base through an undergraduate degree or through middle-to-senior level job experience. Graduate Certificates provide an update on relevant best practices and certification of that knowledge in a business profession. The Graduate Diploma takes this one step further, incorporating the Graduate Certificate units but providing more advanced knowledge and practice. Advanced standing and credit transfer Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas can serve as stepping blocks to Master degrees, for those who have a prior undergraduate degree and as well as students with 4 5 years previous managerial experience but have not completed an undergraduate degree. Direct entry into a Master degree is also available for those with an appropriate undergraduate degree. Credit transfer is applied for on the basis of completed relevant studies previously undertaken. W: cdu.edu.au/student-central/advanced-standing Master of Professional Accounting (MPAE) The Master of Professional Accounting qualifies you for entry into the accounting professions. Students who do not have relevant prior work experience can choose to enroll in the extended version of this degree (MACPP) which incorporates a professional placement component. Master of Business Administration (MBAP14) Our MBA is intended to advance your ability to think outside the box, to lead and to manage others who have areas of competency and advance your organisation s goals. The MBAP14 provides an additional placement opportunity for students to gain the required management experience. Postgraduate degree by research The overall research strategy of the Charles Darwin University Business School builds on local and global knowledge, and studies the influence of culture on business practices. Research aims to contribute to the sustainable business growth for Northern Australia and for businesses operating in the Asia-Pacific region. Our research programs are sponsored by both industry and government, are often multidisciplinary and often conducted in conjunction with the Charles Darwin University s Northern Institute.
