Using These Notes These notes refer to the IWBs in the Music Classroom slides from the presentation given in the workshop and they give an explanation of how each slide was created. The instructions are general in nature so that they can be applied to any type of IWB software, Powerpoint or Keynote. Not all techniques will be achievable in all software programs. Please consult your IWB software reference manual (or Google!) for instructions specific to the IWB used at your school. General Skills to Learn When using your IWB software, the following skills will come in handy: Duplicating objects Ordering/arranging (change which object is on top) Word translation: convert handwriting to typed text Adding website links Adding pictures Adding music (audio) and video Using sound effects, other special effects Reveal answers by erasing Animation Record yourself drawing symbols Using provided games (flash games) Gathering and Organising Your Materials Keep all the images, audio files, videos and anything else you re going to use to create your presentation in a folder together on your hard drive. If there are items you think you ll use repeatedly, save them to the Gallery or Resources area of your IWB software program so they re easy to find. Interactive Listening Project Composer Image Set background colour (often in the Format or Edit menu) Create text about composer Insert an image of the composer Resize it or move it if necessary Create a link from the image to a website with more information 3
Insert Images You can find a great selection of images online that are legal to use. Look for Creative Commons licensed (the creator assigns a license which allows reuse) or royalty- free (which doesn t always mean cost- free) images. See the Links section for a couple of suggestions Download the image by right- clicking on it and choosing Save Image As or similar. Save it somewhere useful and give it a descriptive title. I usually save the name of the creator of the picture in the title so that I can attribute them when necessary. To add it to your presentation: drag it from the Explorer window (PC) or from the Finder (Mac) straight on to the current slide or insert it by going to the Insert menu and choosing Picture or Media Link To A Website You can link images, or text in your presentations to websites that provide more information about the subject. Select the image first (or text) and then choose Link or Hyperlink from the Insert menu You can often also right- click on the object and choose the Link option there A window will open and there will be a place to insert a website address (URL) Visit the website in your internet browser and copy the address Go back to your IWB software and paste the URL into the appropriate place Click Insert link or OK to exit the window Interactive Listening Project - Character Themes Set the background colour Create text: title and description Insert an image of the character/animal (ie. Peter and the bird) Insert an image of the notation Create a link from the notation image to a sound file 4
Notation To create an image of a snippet of notation from Sibelius: Create a new score in Sibelius Input the notes, dynamics and articulation Press Alt+G (Option+G on Mac). Your mouse pointer will become a cross Click and drag around the part of the score you want Adjust the size of the box if necessary using the handles Press Ctrl+C (Command+C) Go back to your IWB software program and press Ctrl+V (Command+V) to paste This works in Word (great for creating exam papers), IWB software, Powerpoint and Keynote Preparing Audio Files It s a good idea to prepare the audio before adding to a presentation. If the audio file is short, you may not need to do anything at all. However, if you need just a small part of a longer audio file you can edit it in the free audio editor Audacity first. Audacity allows you to chop off the beginning and/or end and create fade- ins and fade- outs. Adding Audio You can attach an audio file to an image or text. Select the image/text Go to the Insert menu and choose insert sound/media/audio/music (called various names in different programs) Click on Choose File or From File Find and select the audio file Click Insert/OK Music Literacy Melodic and Rhythmic Dictation Create custom- made staves or use provided manuscript with your IWB software Create the song title with the text tool Insert an image of a snail (large) for the title Duplicate or clone the large snail and make it smaller so it can be used as noteheads Duplicate the small snail (or use Infinite Cloner on Smartboard or Drag A Copy on Promethean) so there are many noteheads for students to use 5
Custom Made Staves IWB software usually comes with ready- made manuscript in varying sizes and styles, but sometimes you might find that you need a custom- made stave for your classes. Create one line using the line tool. Adjust the thickness, colour and length of the line if necessary Duplicate the line 4 more times (shortcut is usually Ctrl+D or Command+D) Position the 5 lines so that they re evenly spaced When you re happy with the way they look, lock the 5 lines in place. This means that students won t accidentally drag them out of position Save your stave to the Gallery or Resources area of the IWB software so you can use it again in the future Song Shapes (Images for Noteheads) Find an image to use as a song shapes (ie. the pink snail for Snail, Snail) Make them small so they fit nicely on the stave (test it out!) Alternatively, you or your students can draw a an appropriate picture to use Turn on Infinite Cloner (Smartboard) or Drag A Copy (Promethean you can also add it to your Toolbox) to use the object many times on the same page Rhythmic Dictation Using a similar technique, you can use the IWB for rhythm (or melody) dictation exercises. Set the background colour of the slide See if your IWB software has any rhythmic elements as part of its gallery: note values, clefs, barlines and time signatures Set up some of the elements ahead of classtime: I set up the title, time signature and barlines and locked them all in place Drag one of each of the rhythmic elements to the bottom of the slide and turn on Infinite Cloner (Smartboard) or Drag A Copy (Promethean). If your IWB doesn t have that function, have students duplicate the item before they use it in the rhythm 6
Music Literacy Rain, Rain Set the background colour, create the title and add an image Create the stick notation elements and move them to the bottom of the page Create a beat circle that s big enough to fit the joined quavers Duplicate the circle 3 more times and then position the 4 circles evenly in a row Then duplicate the group of 4 circles to create a second line Stick Notation Create one crotchet stem using the Line tool Duplicate the single stem two times and then add a horizontal line to make joined quavers Group the 3 lines that make up the quavers so they can be moved around as a single unit Duplicate the group and flip horizontally so you have stems up and stems down Tempo Words The Magic Star Create the tempo words: type each term and the matching definition next to each other, separated by a space, like this: fast allegro Change the colour of the text: make all the tempo words one colour and all the definitions another colour Set the background colour, making sure that it s the same colour as the definitions Create the Magic Star using the Shape tool. Fill it in and make sure it s the same colour as the tempo words Create a title and instructions using the text tool When a tempo word is dragged on to the star, the definition will magically appear 7
Music technology training Free monthly newsletter Help - The Words Keep Going Behind the Star! If the text objects end up behind the star instead of on top of the star, you ll need to rearrange the order of objects that is, which object should remain on top (forward) and which one should remain behind (backward). Select the object (the text) Right- click on it and choose Order/Reorder/Arrange Select Bring to Front Repeat for each text object Parts of the Guitar Erase to Reveal #1 Basic Steps Set the background colour Add the guitar image (I used one of the provided Smartboard images) Use the Line tool to create the black lines that indicate the different parts of the guitar Type the answers next to the end of the black lines Cover up the answers by choosing the Pen tool and colouring over the answer with the same colour as the background Starlight Starbright Erase to Reveal #2 Basic Steps Set the background image (starry sky) Add the beat hearts and lock them in place Add the correct rhythm (stick notation) in black and lock each one in place Colour over the answers with red Students can write their guesses over the top and then erase them to reveal the correct answers 8
Soundscapes Optional: find a background that suits your soundscape theme Discuss with students which objects/creatures you might find in your chosen scene Draw each one using the IWB pens Select the drawing (all parts of the picture) so that it becomes an object that you can move around. If there are lots of parts to the drawing, you may need to group the parts together Ask the students to decide on a sound for each one Draw an object that will move around the scene visiting each item in the scene (ie. a submarine in the under- the- sea theme). This object will act as the conductor Perform the soundscape by conducting the piece with the submarine Record Drawing of Symbols Create a custom stave as before Activate the screen recorder (see note below) Draw the symbol and narrate the steps Stop the recording and play it back for students to watch Screen Recorders Some IWBs such as the Smartboard - come with a built in screen recorder. However, if your IWB software doesn t have one you can use a free screencasting program such as Jing which is available for both Mac and PC. Jing can take screenshots (static photos of your screen) as well as screencasts (videos). Screencasts are limited to 5 minutes. Download Jing here: 9
Score Markup Drag a PDF or image of a score into your presentation Use the IWB pens to mark- up the score Use the Eraser tool to remove handwriting Younger Students Rhythmic Literacy Create a score in Sibelius and remove the stems from the notes: Select all the bars (click in the first bar and shift- click in the last bar) Open the Properties Window by going to Window > Properties Click on the Notes tab Choose notehead number 8 from the drop- down menu) Select the section of score you need as an image (see earlier instructions), copy it and then paste it into the IWB software Alternatively, turn your score into a PDF (File > Print select PDF) and drag it into your IWB software Lock it in place Older Students: Score Analysis Use the same steps above to add a more complex score to your IWB software. You and/or the students can use the IWB pens to mark up the score when discussing form, motifs and so on. 10
Puzzles: Word Search Find or create a word search puzzle Convert it into a PDF, or an image (PNG) and drag it into your IWB software Students can use the IWB highlighter and pen tools to identify the words Contact me (I m happy to answer questions ) Contact me regarding Face- to- face training for your school/network/event Online courses Mobile: Website: Facebook: Twitter: katie@midnightmusic.com.au
