Curse Descriptin This curse teaches principles f health prmtin (nutritin, hygiene, sexuality/hiv preventin, sanitatin/water, maternal/child health and fitness) and interventins with peple wh are sick r injured (first aid and early interventin, infectius diseases, and sexually transmitted infectins, addictins) and finally, building a healthy sciety. It des this within a cntext f whleness, in which health is nt the absence f disease but a state f physical, emtinal, scial, and spiritual wellbeing. The curse is applied, causing students t reflect n hw t apply lessns t their wn lives r the lives f family and friends. 2. Curse Objectives Specific bjectives: By end f curse students will: Define and apply cncepts in health and whleness, including relatinships f physical, mental/emtinal, scial, and spiritual health factrs Identify and describe (subjectively) hw persnal behaviurs and chices affect shrt and lng term health f self and family Develp persnal gals and make recmmendatins t family, friends r a lcal cmmunity fr imprving health Identify and apply cncepts in preventin (hygiene, nutritin, healthy sexuality, maternal/child health, fitness) Identify and apply cncepts in interventin (first aid and early interventin, infectius disease, sexually transmitted infectins, addictin) Identify and apply cncepts in cmmunity/envirnmental health (sanitatin, water and land use as well as scial tpics that influence the health f sciety. 3. 2 4. Curse Cntent 4.1 Curse Outline and Cntent Descriptin This curse prepares students t becme health seekers and health leaders in their wn cntext. UCU graduates shuld seek that which is healthy and gd fr them, and encurage the same fr their family, cmmunity, and sciety. Gals fr the curse include: Students will be encuraged tward better health seeking behaviur. Students will knw strategies t maintain and prmte health and seek help with health prblems. Health is nt autmatic, ne must wrk t attain and then keep it. Students will acquire knwledge, skills and abilities that are intended t prmte a lnger, healthier and mre cmplete and hly life. Health and whleness is a key t success in what they pursue. Students will acquire basic health tls, skills, knwledge t carry fr their entire lives. Students shuld recgnize that health and whleness is a prduct f individual, family and cmmunity factrs, including knwledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviurs. We live and make decisins in families, and live and wrk in cmmunities. Hw we live affects thers; hw thers live affects us. Students will understand hw the Christian cncept f the whle persn is integral t cmplete health. Christian values influence health; ethics and mral decisins have direct and lng lasting effects n health. The Bible is full f useful guidelines fr imprving health. Students will recgnize their rle as health leaders even if they are nt emplyed specifically in health services r prgrams. A health leader will encurage thers tward healthier and hlier lifestyles. Students shall cmplete a grup assignment in class each week during tutrials. Attendance and participatin is required. Essay 1 shall be a 500 wrd essay n integrating spiritual health with physical, emtinal, and scial health issues. Essay 2 shall be a 500 wrd essay n health leadership within an individual s wn cntext. Scrapbk: Read thrugh articles n health frm any frm f media papers, fr example newspapers, magazines, weekly articles frm varius health perating rganizatins, etc. Lk fr any articles related t the tpic cvered that week under health and whleness. Each week select an article that relates t the tpic fr that week r a previus week. Cut r phtcpy the relevant articles and stick them in either a file r an exercise bk. They shuld be in the rder f the lessn tpics. Write the surce and date f the article n the article, e.g., New Visin, p.3, Write 3 paragraphs abut the subject. Paragraph 1: brief summary f the article. Paragraph 2: describe impact it has n sciety Paragraph 3: Yur pinin, cnclusin, r recmmendatin. Prepare at least eight articles fr the scrap bk. 4 6. Faith in Teaching Faith is integrated in three ways. First, the cre definitin f the title Whleness is A state f persnal physical, emtinal, scial, and spiritual health, in which a persn knws their value in the eyes f Gd, their families and their cmmunities, and where they are empwered t make gd health decisins. This definitin is wven thrughut the curse, e.g. even fitness includes spiritual fitness (spiritual strength, flexibility, and endurance). Secnd, each week there is a Bible passage entitled The Whle Truth selected fr each week s tpic. This passage is in student wrkbks and is read and discussed during class.
