3 Trainee information Before you start The assessor/observer will talk about what you need to do. You may have been observed doing some of these tasks already, or there may be workplace documents you have completed, such as a workplace incident report, which documents what you have done at work. You may bring evidence of what you have done already, such as your induction training log, or proof of competency from a course you have completed, eg a marked assessment or project. This may be recorded as evidence. As you go Follow the instructions for each task. For knowledge assessment questions you can choose to write your answers or your assessor may record your verbal answers for you. Your assessor or observer will use the observation form in this Trainee Assessment when they observe your work. Sometimes they may ask you to do a specific task or ask a question about what you are doing. If you need help with this assessment, please contact your assessor. 4 Definitions The word trainee in this assessment refers to you, the person being assessed. Other terms that may be used are student, candidate or employee. An organisation s policies and procedures are the policies and procedures of the employer and include ethical codes, standards and other organisational requirements. A workplace assessor or assessor is the person who will assess you. An observer is someone who understands the assessment, works closely with you and can confirm that you have performed the task competently. The terms verifier and verification may be used in some assessments instead of observer or observation. Cleaning agents refer to commercial cleaning chemicals, water and other agents used to clean and/or disinfect. PPE is the abbreviation for personal protective equipment. For example, gloves, safety glasses, protective clothing, helmets. Carpet types refers to different types of carpet. For example, tufted, woven, fusion bonded, needle punched. Industry guidelines Work practices must comply with the following guidelines: AS/NZS 3733:1995 Cleaning & maintenance of residential & commercial carpet. 5 Task 1: Carpet identification For this task, you need to show that you can correctly identify two carpet types, their construction, where they are commonly used and any specific requirements to be aware of when cleaning them. Complete the following table to show your knowledge about two different carpet types, their construction, common use and specific cleaning requirements. 1 Carpet identification and construction. You must: name two types of carpets. describe their construction. say where they are used. name one requirement to be aware of when cleaning each type of carpet. An example has been done for you. Example Carpet type: Fusion bonded carpet. How is the carpet constructed? This type of carpet has a nylon face yarn glued to a backing material. Where is this type of carpet used? It is common in rest homes, hospitals and malls. What is one requirement to be aware of when cleaning this type of carpet? Nylon is strong but it can yellow with oxidation and UV damage and this is hard to correct. Carpet 1 type: How is the carpet constructed? Where is this type of carpet used? Task 1: Assessor s feedback to trainee When the assessor agrees that you have completed this task successfully, they will sign it off on the assessment summary page at the front of this assessment. 7 Task 2: Clean carpet for a client For this task your observer will observe you cleaning carpet as part of your job. Your observer will complete the following observation form and may ask questions about what you are doing or what you have done previously. They may have recently seen you do one or more of these tasks. If so, they can record on the form evidence previously seen, heard, documented or filed. Before you are assessed make sure you know: your organisation s policies and procedures. any relevant legislation. industry guidelines. Read the observation form to make sure you cover all requirements. Observation The trainee must do the following tasks. The observer/assessor may also use this column to record comments. Assessor/observer to complete Clean carpet for a client. Observer to write down what type of carpet was cleaned: Date: Negotiate the carpet cleaning schedule with the client by finding out: when to clean. what to clean. how often the cleaning is to be done (the frequency). any other instructions (if required). Assess the condition of the carpet and complete a risk assessment. If you provide the client with a written report, attach a copy of the risk assessment report for your assessor, if possible. 8 Tell the client the outcome of the risk assessment and agree on the cleaning procedures. You could mention any risks to the carpet, for example shrinkage from drying or any damage and any pre-existing conditions. Change your work practices to suit the client s circumstances and needs. For example, only use noisy equipment after normal business hours. Put on your PPE. Observer to write down what PPE was used: Choose the correct equipment for the site, carpet type and type of cleaning to be done. Make sure all equipment is safe and in good working condition. Observer to write down what equipment and cleaning agents were used: Choose and prepare the correct cleaning agents for the site, carpet type and type of cleaning to be done. Make sure all cleaning agents are safe to use and prepared following the manufacturer s instructions. Clean the carpet by: inspecting the carpet to identify the areas that need cleaning. vacuuming to remove any dry dirt/soil. spot removing stains (if required). applying the pre-spray, rinsing and neutralising if using a carpet cleaning machine. Follow your organisation s policies and procedures at all times. Dry the carpet by: grooming the carpet. drying the carpet following industry best practice. 9 Advise the client when the carpet may be used after cleaning. Replace furniture and fittings to prevent carpet damage. Remember to follow client instructions and if required, use protective material under furniture legs. Complete all work within the agreed timeframes and to organisational cleaning standards.
