HSC 2020 The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is going ahead in 2020, and NESA has three important messages for HSC students: We know you are worried. While we recognise we are facing an unprecedented situation, we want to assure you that you will be able to get a HSC certificate this year, and that the certificate will facilitate access to university, further education and employment, as it has for students over the past 50 years. Keep learning, do your assessments as advised by your school, make progress on your major projects where you can and, most importantly, look after yourself, whether you are at school or at home. Reach out to family, friends and your teachers if you need to. If you get sick, your school and NESA have provisions to ensure you are not disadvantaged. 4 Mullumbimby High School The Lyrebird Page 4 Term 1 Week 10 MONDAY 30 March 2020 INDONESIAN It s been a busy term for Languages students this term in Indonesian. As well as having a plethora of new and exciting learning opportunities at our fingertips due to our school being part of our ipad Pilot Program, students have been exploring contemporary Indonesian culture, learning about themselves and their own intracultural identity, and connecting with teenagers from our Sister School, SMAN 5 Mataram, in Lombok (Indonesia). Mullumbimby High School (MHS) is proud of the partnership that exists under the Australia-Asia Bridge School Partnerships Program, and in late 2019 the facilitating teachers from each school involved in the program, Bu Mount and Pak Endang, were successful in obtaining a $15,000 grant over three years to further strengthen our partnership. The grant has already been put to good use with SMAN 5 purchasing their first ever Interactive Whiteboard, and hosting professional learning run by Australian representatives of the BRIDGE program for teachers in their region. At MHS, we plan on using the grant to help support students to further engage with their friends in Indonesia by supporting school exchange programs, and more. This term, we have been building new friendships by exchanging s and Video Blogs (Vlogs) with the students in Lombok (the photos are of our awesome Year 9 Indonesian students filming their class introductory video). Through these experiences, our Languages students are able to put their Indonesian to practical use, deepen their understanding of Indonesian culture and connect with teenagers who live a very different life from their own. We have watched an Indonesian movie that was recommended by our Indonesian friends, and reported back with our own reviews and suggestions of Australian films to watch. As we move towards an online learning platform during these uncertain times, I encourage all parents and students to be regularly accessing our Google Classroom and Sentral Parent Portal. If a parent would like to be added to our Google Classroom as a guardian and receive either daily or weekly updates of what is happening in the Classroom, please contact me via the portal or ([email protected]) with your preferred address and I will organise this. I really look forward to staying connected with you all, and to an action-packed Term 2 - tetap aman dan tetap bersikap positif! - Ms Sophie Mount, Indonesian Teacher

The P&C Federation are constantly adding links and information relating to COVID-19. You can find information, links and resources on their website and on their social media platform. We are really thankful to our principal Greg Armstrong and the staff at MHS for also keeping the school community informed and up to date with the latest information and directives from the government in regards to COVID-19. Former Mullumbimby High School student Kirra Prendergast has much a wealth of information and handy hits for supporting parents to understand the Information Technology that many of our children confidently roam. You can click on Kirra s website on This week Kirra shares information about the second coming of an app called HouseParty. And just to finish with some positive news: We have been successful with a Community Building Partnership grant from the State Government. This will fund the installation of another Chubbler at the school. Thank you Laurel Cohn for all your work in securing this grant. 11 Mullumbimby High School The Lyrebird Page 11 Term 1 Week 10 MONDAY 30 March 2020 MATHEMATICS THIS TERM AND BEYOND The Mathematics staff have been working hard to ensure all students have access to work during this period of uncertainty. The main access point for all work will be through google classroom. From here, students will be provided work through variety of new and fun online platforms such as: Education Perfect - An online learning program for all topics. Schools have been provided free access to the program until May. It is a helpful and fun way of learning Mathematics as simple explanation of each topic are provided before final questions. Quizizz - Online Quiz program that links straight to google classroom. Teachers will prepare multiple choice questions that students answer. When students answer a question correctly they attain power ups which can be used to help answer further questions. Khan Academy - an online Mathematics tutorial program that has excellent explanation of mathematical concepts. Zoom - Online conferencing website. Teachers in the Mathematics departments are aiming to have one Zoom conference with each class every week from next week. Helpful at home learning tips for Mathematics: Make yourself a clean and tidy workspace you can use everyday If working from the textbook, read the explanations at the start of the textbook and go through the worked examples. Check your answers to see if you have been working out correctly. Make a schedule of work (this could be similar to your school timetable) If you do not have a scientific calculator at home, download the app Ncalc on your phone instead of using phone calculators A very confusing time for everyone. Let's work together and keep learning! - Ms Janelle Molyneux, Head Teacher Mathematics

17 Mullumbimby High School The Lyrebird Page 17 Term 1 Week 10 MONDAY 30 March 2020 Tips for parents to help gamers play - from our P&C Page Former Mullumbimby High School student Kirra Prendergast has kindly offered us the following tips for parents in regards to our children accessing online gaming: While we might be cooped up and isolated for a while any day now, plenty of gamers are going to see this as a free for all, which is concerning. The other side of the coin is that this is a way to connect with others when they can't do it in real life because of self-isolation. Here are some tips parents can use to help their gamers play a little more intelligently while we are isolating. 1. Parents, try to invest some time into their gaming, either as a cheerleader / fan, or a player. The benefits of being coached in their favourite game are very important. One reason is understanding the information on the screen, and another reason would be connecting with your kid. The tone of the conversation changes when they see you as a teammate and not an opponent. 2. Try to promote quality over quantity. In this case, suggest that they prioritise real life friends rather than their online friends for the next little while. Don't worry, they'll know how to connect with friends from school online. 3. Try to take a couple of days off gaming per week where you spend a little more time as a family being productive or planning something that can be done when you're out. In this case, even if it's watching movies on another screen, it's a different activity. 4. Help them understand that overplaying will take them beyond the benefits they think they are going to get from playing. Expect more frustration, less concentration and ultimately less fun. Check out the intelligent gaming guide here: Limit gaming sessions based on these criteria: A 3-hour session is plenty and beyond that they will start to feel the effects of overplaying. Stick to 3 hours as a max, take a day or 2 off, and they will find themselves enjoying their gaming time a lot more than if they were to over indulge during this tough time.
