1 The Aspen Hill Library Community News Published by the Friends of the Aspen Hill Library and the Aspen Hill Library Advisory Committee * * Spring 2015 * * Bonnie Benwick comes to Aspen Hill! Washington Post Deputy food and recipe editor Bonnie Benwick will speak at our Library Luncheon on April 25, You are invited to attend! Details on the back page - page 6. Library Gardens in March Meet Angelisa Hawes Angelisa, our new Agency Manager, grew up in Michigan. She attended Howard University for her undergraduate degree, and then returned to Michigan, where she worked in schools and in retail. She planned to go to law school, so she had studied Latin in high school, and was on the debate team. An internship at a public library brought her to Library Science, and she received her Library degree from Wayne State University. She lives in Takoma Park, DC, with her husband and daughter. She has worked in Library public services in Virginia and DC, and now here in Aspen Hill. Her public services career spans bookmobiles, senior older adult services, and children s services. In DC, she worked in various wards of the city, and was a branch manager. Here in Montgomery County, Angelisa chairs the County Library Juvenile Steering Committee, which provides training for the children s staff, children s programming, and new initiatives, such as the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs. Angelisa has found the Aspen Hill community to be very welcoming and one that really loves its Library. She notes the dedication of the many community volunteers in keeping the Library running and looking good, and the use and appreciation of the Library as a meeting space. Her wishes for our Library include more quiet study space, more electrical outlets, a dedicated children s programming room, and a computer lab. She notes that the new hours and additional staff are enabling the Aspen Hill Library to step-up its programming and service. She finds that Librarians change people s lives every day. Librarians give kids tools for early literacy, keep seniors reading, enable job searchers, help those for whom English is their second language, assist with finding health information, and provide help with hobbies and travel plans. For Angelisa, this is the best job ever.

4 Welcome Back, Chang-Yu! Chang-Yu Hsiao returns to Aspen Hill as Librarian II for Adult and Teen Services. While she studied for her Library Science degree at the University of Maryland, Chang-Yu worked at Aspen Hill as the part-time Library Associate for Young Adult Services. She left Montgomery County in the Fall of 2013 for a full-time Librarian position in Prince George s County, returning to Montgomery County as a Librarian at Kensington Park, and is now back to Aspen Hill. She is excited and happy to be back here with us, and is planning excellent programs for teens and adults. Chang-Yu also has moved to Aspen Hill, which makes her a member of our Community. Be sure to welcome your new neighbor! BUDGET ISSUES Libraries matter! The Friends of the Aspen Hill Library and the Aspen Hill Library Advisory Committee have been collecting postcards to request that Aspen Hill receive a newer, expanded, enlarged Library. Many thanks to everyone who filled out the postcards, and expressed your pleas and thoughts for our library. Postcards can still be filled out!! Find them inside the Library. Meet Patricia Buck Patricia Buck, our new Library Associate, comes to Aspen Hill from the Germantown Library. Patricia, with a Master s Degree in Fine Arts, started her Library Career in the Denver Public Library system, where she worked in a variety of positions, from circulation to cataloging. Here in the DC metropolitan area, she first worked at the Falls Church Library. In Montgomery County, she has worked at the Long Branch and Bethesda Libraries, and at Virtual Services, located in Rockville. Patricia has won several Library Awards of Excellence. Her most recent award is from the National Organization of Counties, for her work on Montgomery County Library outreach services. She loves the Aspen Hill community, finding folks to be warm and friendly, true readers though also engaged with technology and wanting to learn more. She enjoys her ability to develop relationships with the Aspen Hill Library customers. As a full-time Library Associate, she works at the Information Desk, presents programs, and helps maintain the Library collections. Charlie Brown Sadly, we report that longtime Aspen Hill Friends member and our Webmaster, Charlie Brown, recently passed away. He is greatly missed. Our condolences to his brother and family.
5 Who Is That? A continuing series on who are the people on the plaques that are scattered throughout our Library In the library s media room (many years ago it was the reference room) is a Montgomery County Government Proclamation declaring June 12, 1988 as Peary/Henson Day. Peary/Henson day was named for the co-discoverers of the North Pole: Robert E. Peary ( ) and Matthew Henson ( ). The two explorers have special ties to the Aspen Hill community. From , Peary High School was the public high school serving Aspen Hill. (Located at Arctic Avenue, the old Peary High School Building now houses the Berman Hebrew Academy.) Also, in 1989, by an act of the State Legislature, Matthew Henson State Park was established on 112 acres of what was once the Outer Beltway Right-of-Way on the southern edge of Aspen Hill, south of Wheaton Woods and Harmony Hills - between Viers Mill Road and Georgia Avenue. As part of the implementation of the 1994 Aspen Hill Master Plan, an additional 100 acres of adjacent land - between Georgia Avenue and Layhill Road - was designated as the Matthew Henson Greenway. The Peary/Henson Day proclamation was signed by Executive Sidney Kramer ( ) who served on the Montgomery County Council from , the Maryland Senate from , and as County Executive from His son, Ben Kramer, serves as a Delegate to the Maryland House from District 19, which includes Aspen Hill.
