2 Welcome to the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy 2013! For more than 50 years, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management has been a leading business school in providing professional, academic, and executive education to managers, executives and financial institutions. Within the framework of the Frankfurt School UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance we are proud to present our Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy for Frankfurt School launched the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy in 2010 in strong recognition of the financial sector s cruicial role in integrating climate considerations and sustainability into their operations. In 2012 we introduced for the first time an additional Summer Academy in Nairobi, Kenya to address the rising demand for climate friendly solutions on the African continent. In response to last year s overwhelming interest in our Africa course, we have decided to launch a second Summer Academy in Mombasa, Kenya, again offering a strong regional focus. The course offers plenty of opportunities to learn, to gain new insights, and widen your scope both from our well-experienced faculty and academy educators and from networking with other participants. We look forward to hosting you at our Summer Academy in Kenya! Achieving a low carbon, resource efficient economy will require the scaling-up of private sector investment into clean technology applications around the world. In this context, UNEP has worked for the past 18 years to facilitate interaction between public and private sector financiers, aiming to build capacities and lower barriers to investment in the scaling up of clean technology sectors. UNEP assists financiers to understand and assess the risks and the potential returns associated with green investing. The 2013 Summer Academy advances work in this area, including that associated with the United Nation s Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and its objective of doubling the share of renewables in the global energy mix by For this reason, we are pleased to once again support the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy, hosted in Kenya, and delivered by the Frankfurt School UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance. 3 The Programme in a Nutshell This year, the Centre is once again pleased to present a Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy in Kenya to address the rising demand for innovative financing for climate friendly solutions in Africa. One of the Centre s primary goals is equipping developing and emerging economies with the necessary skills to gain access to clean energy. To help achieve this goal, our Summer Academy programme supplies international decision makers, project developers and investors with technical and financial know-how through practical and theoretical coursework that includes core courses on policy and sources of financing, technical courses in project finance and project design, as well as an interactive training on effective project design and project development and real-life, on-the-ground case studies. Our training philosophy is in tune with the current research findings on optimal methods for adult-learning, whereby participants are treated as the primary source of expertise through active participation. Because of this, we will also facilitate an interactive session in which participants will engage each other on the differing perspectives and challenges in financing sustainable energy as well as a panel discussion. To facilitate a more tangible experience, a field trip and networking events are planned that will compliment the classroom curriculum. Coordinated and implemented by the Centre, the 5-day training course offers a comprehensive framework on renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) financing projects. Integrated knowledge is delivered by senior trainers and practitioners that combine both academic-technical RE/EE and banking knowledge through a mix of lectures, discussions, and group work. 5 Core Training Climate change & policy negotiations The purpose of this topic is to understand the recent international trends in climate change policies and environmental regulations, with a focus on the implications for clean energy investments. Sources and instruments of financing Project finance and its sources is a key pillar for a successful project or programme. Therefore, its principles in regards to public, private and carbon markets will be discussed in depth. Case studies of private and state banks, international organisations, private funds and other sources of finance will also be presented. Technical Course Project finance training Project finance is one of the central points of the Summer Academy and will provide best practices, including practical tools and methods to set up RE / EE projects. Topics to be covered include technical feasibility, regulatory considerations as well as an introduction to cash flow analysis and financial modeling. Project design for sourcing sustainable energy financing This interactive session suits the needs of practitioners who are working in project design and project origination or project development, either in the public or private sector. Dividing the participants into groups, our experienced trainers will equip them with the necessary tools to design a sustainable energy project or programme that will effectively attract financing. Knowledge sharing The projects designed during the previous session will be presented by the participants who will exchange new perspectives on how to design, implement and finance sustainable energy projects and programmes. Real-life case studies in RE or EE A set of case study examples of sustainable energy projects will be presented by project implementers from various perspectives: the debt and equity financiers, the engineer and the regulator. Panel discussion and institutional fair A panel discussion will be held at the end of the week on recent trends in sustainable energy finance. Panelists will include leading experts and practitioners in the field. 6 About the Organiser The Summer Academy programme builds on the framework of the Frankfurt School UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance and the professional certificate programme in Renewable Energy Finance at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management in Germany. The Centre is a strategic cooperation between UNEP and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Both partners recognise that climate change will pose a fundamental challenge to the world economy, and is already affecting many populations worldwide. Who should attend the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy? The financial sector plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. For this reason the Centre is committed to advancing the role of the financial sector in catalysing investments in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Located at Frankfurt School, the Centre combines research of the highest calibre with an orientation towards practical implementation throughout the project cycle. By applying findings and instruments in the field where they will be most effective, the Centre maximises its knowledge base to become a leader in climate and sustainable energy finance. 7 Administrative Details Tuition fees and accommodation expenses The total fee for the SEF Summer Academy is USD This payment includes the course fee, all training materials, full-board accommodation in single rooms for the duration of training as well as transportation for site visits. Handouts, documentation, and background literature will be assembled in a comprehensive participant handbook, which will also be provided on USB device by the end of the training. The operation of the Summer Academy is tuition-based and not sponsored by any specific donor agency with the exception of five scholarships offered by the Centre. Accordingly, participants have to cover all training costs and / or find a sponsor for their participation. This is also the case for travel expenses from the respective countries of origin to Mombasa, Kenya. Requirements The language of instruction will be English. No translation will be provided. Additionally, it is preferable that participants have already experience (theory and / or practice) in RE / EE finance. Application procedures The application deadline is September 01, Please note that we select applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. Nevertheless, we will try to form a group of participants with complementary experiences and backgrounds. The number of participants is limited to approx. 50, however, the participants will be divided into two groups to ensure a superior learning experience. You can apply online at: Scholarships The Centre offers 5 scholarships to eligible candidates. The scholarships will cover 75 % of the fees for the Summer Academy programme. Candidates are required to cover the remaining 25 %.
