3 About the Teacher Training Program The STEAA Teacher Training Program offers 3 courses/levels: Certificate III in Suzuki Talent Education Certificate IV in Suzuki Talent Education Diploma of Suzuki Talent Education These Certificates are recognition of training undertaken, completion of requirements, and the involvement of you and your studio in the Suzuki Association. At each level, the course of study includes: 1. Attendance at lectures, usually at the Suzuki Institute 2. Self-paced learning, consisting of one s own reading, working with a Teacher Trainer and volunteering assistance at Suzuki events. With appropriate documentation, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be granted for some units of study. 3. An instrumental recital. 4. Assessment tasks. Timeline for Trainee Teachers, Certificate IV: 1. Contact the Suzuki Institute Program Director at the Suzuki Institute. Complete an Application Form. 2. After acceptance into the Certificate IV Training Program, sign the Code of Ethics (Appendix K). 3. Connect with your Teacher Trainer (mentor and coach) for any required lessons, observations, consultations and performances. 4. Attend the Certificate IV course lectures mark attendance in this Manual. 5. Complete the Assessments and requirements as listed in this Certificate IV Manual. 6. Perform Recital Assessment Task p Copy the completed Manual requirements and send the original to the Suzuki Institute Program Director (after consultation with your Teacher Trainer). 8. Await notification that requirements for Certificate IV have been satisfied. It is a requirement of teacher membership of the Suzuki Talent Education Association (NSW) that teachers attend 3 days of training per year as part of their Professional Development and ongoing learning. Generally, there will be a 3-day Professional Development conference held once a year in the school holidays. Please note the details when they appear on the Suzuki website calendar. (suzukimusic.com.au). There is no point where we can say, This is enough. Through this continuing study, we will be better able to concentrate energies toward better teaching. 5 CERTIFICATE IV in SUZUKI PEDAGOGY Course Requirements and Outcomes ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Trainees wishing to gain Certificate IV in Suzuki Pedagogy need to have: Completed the Certificate III in Suzuki Talent Education Teaching. Certificate IV is considered to be the appropriate qualification level for participants who wish to work as teachers in the STEAA system. However, if you wish to teach beyond Certificate IV repertoire eg Book 8 violin, you will need to progress to the Diploma. STEAA expects that trainees will progress from the Certificate IV to the Diploma. This course is designed to take no more than three years to complete. If not completed within that time frame, application may be made for extension. Trainee teachers may only work on completing a course of study in ONE instrument (or SECM) at a time. OVERVIEW This course provides an in-depth study of Suzuki Method of instrumental teaching. It covers a wide range of subjects including Philosophy, Pedagogy, Performance, Applying Suzuki Parent Education Method, and Principles of Child Development in Suzuki Teaching. 5
6 COURSE OUTCOMES Participation in this course will enable trainees to: Further their study of Suzuki Philosophy and its application to music education Apply Suzuki Instrumental Pedagogy to all the repertoire Conduct parent education lectures Analyse the teaching strategies present in the Suzuki repertoire Identify the musical form and harmonic structure of pieces in the repertoire Understand and perform pieces from the repertoire in the appropriate historic style Establish a foundation of ongoing training and self analysis Demonstrate the ability to teach musical literacy to students COURSE STRUCTURE This course will involve 6 days of training sessions: Days 1-4 in January, Day 5 on a Sunday in Term 1, and Day 6 - two half days in the Easter holidays. Some hours of private lessons and online or self-paced learning will also be necessary for completion of the course and the preparation of assignments. Trainees enrolled in the Certificate IV course may study with a Trainer to prepare performances required for the course. Trainees also observe the Trainer s and others lessons and consult with them regarding the teaching of students, for a minimum of 15 hours (Appendix J). Trainees are also required to Observe and Assist at Workshops and Concerts, for a minimum of 15 hours, and to record their attendance on the provided sheet - Appendix J. 6
