3 1 About the service we inspected Inspection report The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information about all care services is available on our website at The Care Inspectorate is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all children receiving a care service. We want to ensure they have the best start in life, are ready to succeed and live longer, healthier lives. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it right for every child (also known as GIRFEC). Set up by Scottish Government, GIRFEC is a national approach to working in a consistent way with all children and young people. It is underpinned by the principles of prevention and early intervention. The approach helps services focus on what makes a positive difference for children and young people - and what they can do to improve. Getting it right for every child is being woven into all policy, practice, strategy and legislation that affect children, young people and their families. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of Getting it right for every child. They are: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible, and included. They are often referred to as the SHANARRI indicators. We use these indicators at inspection, to assess how services are making a positive difference for children. This service was inspected as a 'Quality themed inspection'. From 1 April 2016 we changed how we chose which quality themes and statements were inspected for better performing services, to be more proportionate and targeted in our work. In highly performing services, inspections will consider the four quality themes: Care and Support, Environment, Staffing and Management and Leadership. Longniddry Primary School Nursery is registered with the Care Inspectorate to provide a care service to 30 children aged three to entry into primary school. The nursery is a new build addition to the primary school in the village of Longniddry, East Lothian. The accommodation provides a playroom, parent page 3 of 10

4 Inspection report room, office and toilet areas. Children have access to an outdoor area and use the school playground regularly. Aims and objectives for the school were reflected in the nursery. At the time of our inspection these were being redeveloped to bring them in line with the schools developing ethos and were about to be shared with parents and children. What we did during the inspection The inspection took place over two days on 19 May and 23 May Feedback was given to the head teacher and nursery teacher at the end of the inspection. We carried out a 'themed' inspection. This targeted approach means that we looked at identified aspects focusing on children's experiences under each Quality Theme as follows: - Quality of care and support - Work carried out to promote respect and children's health. - Quality of environment - Quality of play environment indoors and outdoors. - Quality of staffing - Professional development and knowledge of current good practice. - Quality of management and leadership - Self-evaluation and monitoring. As part of the inspection, we took account of the completed annual return and self-assessment forms that we asked the provider to complete and submit to us. We talked to and gathered views of parents, children and staff. We looked at the way staff worked and interacted with children and looked at some of the documents used to inform parents about the nursery and support staff in their work. Taking the views of people using the care service into account There were 24 children present during our visit. We spoke to a number of children who were settled and very confident in the nursery. They were happy to page 4 of 10

5 Inspection report speak with us and tell us about the setting and the things they enjoyed doing there. Taking carers' views into account We sent 20 care standards questionnaires to the manager to distribute to relatives and carers of people who used the service. We received eleven completed questionnaires before the inspection. Parents all strongly agreed with the statement: 'Overall, I am happy with the quality of care my child receives in this service.' We spoke to some parents who were attending a meeting to assist the nursery with their improvement plan. They confirmed that they were very happy with the consistent quality of experiences and the nurturing environment provided for their children. Comments from parents included: - 'Excellent staff and communication.' - 'Our child is always happy to go to nursery and feel this reflects the high quality of care they provide at Longniddry Nursery.' - 'As parents we get involved as parent helpers and on trips. Lovely way to see our child in a different setting and her interacting with her peers. She loves nursery and all the staff and we haven't got a single thing we would change. Thank you all the Longniddry nursery team.' - 'I am aware that the answers are all very positive. This is because the head teacher and nursery staff have supported my child and ourselves since they started. Extremely safe, nurturing and child focussed.' Comments on Self Assessment Every year all care services must complete a 'self assessment' form telling us how their service is performing. We check to make sure this assessment is accurate. The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self-assessment document from the service provider. We were satisfied with the way the service provider page 5 of 10
