1 SNAMP Data Server Tutorial The server hosted by UC Merced is a data server that is used to share data among the science teams and with the public. To ensure the proper data disclosure, a sharing level is strictly defined and deployed for all of the data on the data server. A registered user can only view and download data that he or she is authorized to access depending upon the entity that he or she belongs to. A registered user that belongs to a science team has full access to his or her science team s data; he or she can upload, download, delete, modify, and change the sharing level on files owned by his or her team. The file structure is predefined by: site, year, and data level. A user should be cautious about where to upload their data on the server. The server is based on open source, and is more compatible with an open source browser rather than a commercial browser. We strongly recommend using the Firefox webbrowser to appropriately display the content of the website. Open any browser and type in the following web address: Register to get access to website: 1. Click on either the New User or Register link on the homepage (figure 1). Figure 1. Main page 2. Fill out the registration form. Make sure all of the required fields are filled.

2 3. Type in your password twice to complete the registration. (NOTE: You will be able to login; however, you will not be able to upload or download any files until the administrator or manager grants access.) Login: 1. On the left side of the home page, type in your username and password. Afterwards click on the Login button. Figure 2. Login If you are logged in, the login boxes will disappear. Uploading files: 1. Login to the website. Remember if the administrator has not given you access based on the team you belong to, you will not be able to upload or download any data). 2. Click on the Files link on the left of the page. You will see a list of six folders; each of which corresponds to the six science teams consisting of the SNAMP project. 3. Click on a folder to view its contents. (NOTE: you will see a check box next to the folder that you have access to).

Files page If you enter a folder or team that you belong to, you will see a row of function buttons at the end of the folder or file list as shown in Figure To upload a single file, click on the Browse button. 5. Then select the sharing level. The sharing level is defined as below. The UCST is set to be the default sharing level. Public: anyone can view the data. MOU: only the MOU and UCST teams are able to view the data. UCST: all of the teams are able to view the data except the MOU. Private: only your team is able to view or modify the data. 6. Click the Upload button. You should see your file name listed after the upload is complete and the page has been refreshed. 7. To upload multiple files click on the Uploads button next to the rightmost button on the first row. You will be able to upload multiple files by specifying them one by one as described in step 4 and 5. Then click on the Upload All button.

4 Figure 4. Function Buttons Downloading Files: 1. Login. 2. Click on Files. 3. Click on the folder of the team. 4. Click on the files you want to download. Changing the sharing level of an existing file: One can obtain the files current sharing level by placing the cursor over the icon of the file. 1. Check the box of the file that you want to change. 2. Click on the corresponding button ( Public, MOU, UCST, or Private ) to change the sharing level. Metadata files: Each file can have its own metadata. Clicking the info button of a file will display the metadata page. All users that can see the file are able to view its metadata. But only the users from the same team that the file belongs to, can modify the content of the metadata. At the end of the metadata page, there are four buttons that provide modification and export functions. If you are not authorized to change the metadata, the modification

5 function buttons are not available. The metadata can be saved as a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file to your local disk. Figure 5. Metadata page
