Unit Number Unit Name Person Responsible Tractor Trailer Truck Driver Training Mike Kiser : 1 Operational Supply the transportation industry with qualified commercial motor vehicle drivers. Southern Union's Truck Driver Training will meet established benchmark for placement as the career technical programs of 79%. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. A need for more qualified commercial motor vehicle operators has been expressed by the industry itself noting a turnover rate of 98%. Advertising, news articles, recruiters from companies have all emphasized the need for qualified drivers. Federal and state departments of labor show the current and future trend of this industry on the upswing. July 2014 N/A Providing students with the necessary skill sets and credentials for entering the field then through visits to employers, from recruiters, application processes and help from the Alabama Career Center, the placement rate should reach the state established benchmark 79%. faculty members will gather student enrollment, completer and placement data at the end of each sequence of training courses and compile the data at the end of the annual cycle. The Truck Driver Training program had 100% placement rate. The Truck Driver Training program instructors will continue to use the action plan. The Truck Driver Training program exceeded the established benchmark of 79% by having 100% placement rate for its completers.

: 2 Operational The advisory committee comprised of transportation employers, Department of Public Safety representatives and local businesses that depend on commercial motor vehicles will be reorganized. Goal 5 Maintain and establish relationships with other educational institutions, public and social agencies, and business and industry. Advisory committee participation in the Truck Driver Training has lacked formal structure in recent years. ongoing none Ask for willing participants to meet twice yearly to discuss needs and improvements that could be made for training commercial drivers. Meeting notes will be reviewed to determine if changes can be made to training to enhance the industry and the drivers produced by the program. The Truck Driving instructors identified several individuals who were willing to serve but were unable to develop a complete committee for the current year. Instructors will attempt to complete this outcome in Some improvement was made toward establishing an advising committee for the program by identifying several individuals who were willing to serve.

: 5 Student Learning Students enrolled in the program will understand new regulations, programs, and technologies which are being utilized in the commercial transportation industry. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. The student has to know about elements of truck driving that are beyond what can be taught in the classroom and lab for example, sleeping at truck stops, driving into Mexico or Canada,or operating a scalehouse bypass system.the current textbooks and instructional materials do not adequately cover these topics. ongoing $600 Acquire new classroom text books or instructional materials which cover the new regulations, programs, and technologies utilized in the commercial transportation industry. New textbooks and materials will be purchased which will cover new regulations, programs, and technologies utilized in the commercial transportation industry. The textbooks and materials will be inventoried and added to the class sources. New classroom textbooks and materials have been identified; however, budget constraints did not allow for the purchase of these materials during the current year. This outcome will be pursued again in Improvement was made for the program in that instructors have identified new textbooks and other course materials that will allow students to learn about new regulations, programs, and technologies.

: 6 Student Learning Provide students with hands on instruction with automatic on board recording devices. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. The College does not currently use automatic on board recording devices. New regulations will go in effect in academic year 2016 to 2017 the use of automatic onboard recording devices will become mandatory. June 2015 $600 The instructor will coordinate with one of several different manufacturers of automatic recording devices to instruct students in the use of the devices. Proficiency with these devices will be mandatory in the near future. Graded hands on testing can be used to determine the students proficiency with the device with all students must score a minimum of 80%. A simulator was donated in this assessment period, but due to the lack of regulations currently in place a course of study could not be developed. The use of this simulator will be implemented in Improvement was made in the program in that it now has an automatic on board recording device that the College will be installing into the trucks.

: 7 Operational To establish a relationship/partnership with the Food Bank of East Alabama to allow students in the Tractor Trailer Truck Driver Training program to deliver food from the Montgomery Area Food Bank to the East Alabama Food Bank facility in order to reduce the operating expenses of the East Alabama Food Bank and to give the students the experience or driving with a load in the trailer. Goal 5 Maintain and establish relationships with other educational institutions, public and social agencies, and business and industry. The Tractor Trailer Truck Driver Training program needed something in the trailers to provide weight in order to give them experience of actual hauling of a weighted trailer. The East Alabama Food Bank was having to pay for the food to be delivered to the local facility from Montgomery, Alabama. Summer 2014 NA 1) Southern Union Truck Driver Training students will drive the trucks to Montgomery, Alabama (approximately one hour away from campus) and pick up loads of food and deliver the food back to the East Alabama Food Bank Facility in Auburn, Alabama. The number of loads of food delivered will indicate how much actual training that the students received with a loaded trailer. The partnership was established, and the College was able to provide a valuable community service while giving students the experience of driving on the Interstate highway with a loaded trailer. Students delivered 42 loads of food to the facility. The College will continue to partner with the East Alabama Food Bank to help them keep operating costs down and to provide students with the experience of driving a loaded trailer. Improvement was made in the Tractor Trailer Truck Driving program by adding training for students in driving with a loaded trailer on an Interstate highway which simulates what they will be required to do upon graduation from the program.
