1 Davis Applied Technology College Curriculum Development Policy and Procedures Training Division Board Approval: 24 April Purpose 1.1. Curriculum development at the Davis Applied Technology College (College) is undertaken in accordance with all relevant institutional policies and procedures. This document clarifies the roles, responsibilities, and processes of curriculum development at the College. 2. References 2.1. College Course Development Policy 2.2. Competencies The specialized knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful performance relating to a specific occupation Council on Occupational Education The accrediting agency for the Davis Applied Technology College. As articulated by its membership, the mission of the Council is assuring quality and integrity in career and technical education Course Specific subject matter comprising part of a program for which instruction is offered within a specified time period Credential A diploma, certificate, degree or other official acknowledgement that a student has completed a program Curriculum Development Office An office maintained by Instructional Systems Design to provide technology and curriculum development resources to instructors in a private area outside of the classroom. The office is scheduled by the Curriculum Development Assistant and time spent in the office is approved by the Director of Programs Curriculum Course Outline The Curriculum Course Outline is used by instructors to divide course content into modules, to identify learning activities to be completed in each

2 Page 2 of 5 module, which development tool will be used to create them, to indicate which activities will be completed by students independently and which will be completed in class Curriculum Quality Checklist The Curriculum Quality Checklist is used by Instructional Systems Design and instructors to review curriculum according to designated quality standards Distance Education Courses Courses utilizing distance education delivery methods Distance Education Delivery Methods Synchronous and/or asynchronous instructional methods. Distance education may include correspondence study, audio, video, or computer technologies Distance Education Programs Programs that make available 50% or more of their required instructional hours via distance education Employer Advisory Team A group of at least three persons external to the institution who are knowledgeable of occupational education and employment needs relating to a specific occupation. Through regularly scheduled (twice annually) and documented meetings, the team provides consultative assistance to ensure that the program continually strives to meet the occupational education needs of the community Hybrid Programs Programs that make available 49% or less of their required instructional hours via distance education Instruction Planned activities directed by an instructor for the purpose of enabling students to acquire specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Instruction may be provided through lectures, laboratory or clinical exercises, or planned Work-based Learning Instructional Media Any print or non-print learning resources (e.g. books, manuals, periodicals, computer software, films, videotapes, audio tapes, slides, and others) and the equipment and services necessary to use them Instructional Methods Methods used by an instructor to enable students to acquire specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Examples include, but are not limited to, lectures, questions, discussions, visuals, exercises, summaries, case studies, electronic simulation, demonstrations, practical hands-on exercises, and virtual reality sessions Instructional Supplies Items needed for instruction Objectives of an Educational Program Statements that specify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be acquired by students through planned instructional activities Program A combination of courses and related activities (i.e. laboratory activities and/or work-based learning) that lead to a credential and are offered to enable students to develop competencies required for a specific occupation Traditional Programs Programs that require all course work to be completed on campus.

3 Page 3 of Work-based Learning Structured learning activities conducted in work settings that are components of educational programs (e.g., externships, internships, clinical experiences, instructional cooperative education, and similar activities). 4. Policy 4.1. Approved and current (updated at least every three years) course curriculum or syllabus will be on file in Instructional Systems Design for each course in every program during the period of time it is taught and will be made available to students at the beginning of each course Program curriculum will include a program orientation, which will be updated annually and on file in Instructional Systems for each program, and will be made available to students at the beginning of the program or if substantial updates are made. The orientation will include a minimum of the following items: Program description Program objectives Availability and use of the Student Resource Center Use of Campus Technology Advisement Employer Advisory Team Student attendance and performance requirements Availability and use of instructional learning materials and equipment General safety guidelines and practices (specific instruction will be in curriculum) 4.3. In order to be approved, curriculum development will meet the criteria defined in the Curriculum Quality Checklist and will follow the curriculum development process Curriculum can be modified at any time Curriculum developed by instructors or employees of the College for instructional use at the College will be the sole property of the College Corrections that need to be made to curriculum or textbooks sold in the College Bookstore with be made through Instructional Systems personnel Curriculum will adhere to the standards outlined in the College Safety Policy, the College Learning Materials, Equipment, Library, and Media Resources Policy, the College Copyright Policy and the College Assessment Policy Curriculum will be evaluated by the Employer Advisory Team annually following the College Employer Advisory Team Policy.

4 Page 4 of 5 5. Procedures 5.1. The instructor selects a textbook, reviews existing supplemental materials and verifies copyright compliance for any materials that will be used in the course The instructor downloads and uses the curriculum template following criteria defined in the Curriculum Quality Checklist The instructor divides the course into modules that contain similar concepts and includes activities, labs, and assessments The instructor submits the curriculum to the assigned Instructional Systems employee If the course includes web or media resources or is delivered in a hybrid format, the instructor meets with the assigned Blended Learning Designer to evaluate these resources and to determine development responsibility and time frame. As the resources are completed, the Blended Learning Designer develops the course and puts learning resources into the Learning Management System Once curriculum has been submitted, the following steps are followed: The Instructional Systems employee notifies the instructor that he/she has received the curriculum, provides a time line for review, and requests any information needed to order textbooks and materials used in the course The course materials are entered in the Course Materials database and a Textbook Request Form is submitted to the Bookstore including materials from previous curriculum that will be discontinued Curriculum is saved to the Work in Progress folder on the curriculum network drive Curriculum is reviewed following the Curriculum Quality Checklist Curriculum is sent to the faculty member for any needed revision The instructor uses the Microsoft Word Track Change feature to update the curriculum and returns revised curriculum to the Instructional Systems employee When curriculum is final: Module data and the curriculum completion date are entered in the student information system Curriculum price is added to curriculum for courses not delivered in a hybrid format Course materials and curriculum and material costs are entered in the Course Material Database For curriculum in courses that are not delivered in a hybrid format: The curriculum file is saved in the corresponding program folder

5 Page 5 of 5 and working files are deleted from the Work in Progress folder. A PDF file is created in the Finalized Curriculum folder The Print Center is notified that curriculum is ready to be printed and advised as to whether or not the new curriculum replaces former curriculum If the instructor chooses to discard former curriculum, the cost of those materials is charged to the instructor s program account The Print Center prints the curriculum and sends it to the Bookstore for sale to students Curriculum is sent to the instructor with notification that the curriculum is complete Curriculum is implemented.
