Unit Number Unit Name Person Responsible Business Management and Supervision (MST) Wanda Markie Hunter : 1 Operational To improve the accessibility of business courses, the Business Department will increase the number of online BUS course offerings by creating two course shells (one for Introduction to Business and one for Legal and Social Environment of Business). During Fall Semester 2013 and Spring Semester 2014, online course offerings for BUS 100 Introduction to Business and Online BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business had maximum enrollment. There has also been a 50 percent increase in requests for online courses submitted to the Business Department Chairperson by the Dean of Student Development and other administrative personnel at Southern Union. To remain competitive, development of online courses is critical to the accomplishment of the mission of the College which includes the provision of programs which are affordable, accessible, equitable, and responsive to the needs of those in the College's service area. July 2014 $6,000 In order to increase the number of online course offerings, course shells will be developed for BUS 100 Introduction to Business and BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business. The number of sections for BUS 100 Introduction to Business and BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business online will be increased. Online courses shells were developed for BUS 100 Introduction to Business and BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business but the number of sections offered did not increase. 1/6
The Business department will continue to analyze the business curriculum for additional online courses to be developed. Two new business management and supervision courses were developed in an online format for the Business Management and Supervision program. Although the online course offerings remained the same, the development of the BUS 100 Introduction to Business and BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business course shells will make it easy to add online sections of these course in the future.. : 2 Student Learning Seventy five percent (75%) of the students in the Introduction to Business course will demonstrate having an understanding of the financial activities of business by scoring a 70% or above on the exam pertaining to the content area related to the financial activities of a business. Spring 2013 Introduction to Business grades for Exam 6 showed 73% of the students scored a 70% or above on Exam 6, which is the content area related to the financial activities of a business. 04/30/ Introduction to Business instructors will use Canvas to provide students with additional study tools to help them to be more successful in the content area which pertains to the financial activities of a business. Recorded audio lectures, PowerPoint slides, and Youtube videos pertaining to the financial activities of a business will be made available to students through Canvas. Spring Semester 2014 Introduction to Business grades for Exam 6, which is the content area related to the financial activities of a business, will be analyzed to see if the additional study tools made available through Canvas improve student learning. 2/6
After analysis of the Spring 2014 Introduction to Business Exam 6, which is the content area related to the financial activities of a business, 80% of the students scored a 70% or above. The Introduction to Business faculty will continue to use Canvas as a tool to provide "in the classroom" students additional study materials for each of the six content areas of the Introduction to Business course. There was an improvement in student learning indicated by a 7% increase in the number of students in the Introduction to Business course who scored a 70% or above on Exam 6, which is the content area related to the financial activities of a business. : 3 Student Learning Eighty percent (80%) of the student in the online Legal and Social Environment of Business course will demonstrate an understanding of the legal and social environment for business operations and its subsequent impact on business by scoring an average of 70 percent on all exams. After a comparison of average exam scores for online BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business with the average exam scores of traditional in the classroom BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business, the results indicated the online BUS 263 exam scores fell below the traditional in the classroom BUS 263 in every instance.in the traditional classroom, the instructor is able to discuss and review the student learning outcomes for each exam. In the online BUS 263, as with all online courses, the responsibility of reviewing key concepts is placed upon the student. Also, many of the test questions are scenario based questions which require students to apply what they have learned instead of simply memorizing terms. Many of these scenario based questions are used as discussion prompts in the traditional classroom. Because of these discussion prompts, the traditional in the classroom students have heard the questions worded in the same manner as they may see on the exam. Online students do not have this advantage. 3/6
August 1, 2 0 To improve student learning in the online Legal and Social Environment of Business course, the Legal and Social Environment of Business instructor will add voluntary practice quizzes to the online BUS 263 course. During Summer Semester 2014, online Legal and Social Environment of Business student exam scores of those students who completed the voluntary practice quizzes will be compared to those who did not. Ninety two percent 92%) of the students who took at least half of the online practice quizzes (regardless of quiz score) scored a 70% or above on all exams. For those students who took less than half of the online practice quizzes, 73% scored a 70% or above on all exam. To improve student learning in the online Legal and Social Environment of Business course, practice quizzes will be made available on a permanent basis to improve student learning. The Legal and Social Environments of Business instructor will make the practice quizzes mandatory. Evidence shows the Legal and Social Environment of Business students who took the initiative to complete the online practice quizzes scored significantly higher on exams than those students who do not take the initiative to complete the online practice quizzes. By making the quizzes mandatory, a higher percentage of the students in BUS 263 Legal and Social Environment of Business course will understand the legal an social environment for business operations and its subsequent impact on business. The students who tool the practice exam scored 19% better than the students who did not take the exams. : 4 Student Learning Seventy percent (70%) of the students in Business Communications will be able to apply language arts skills to create and submit a "mailable" document in one attempt. 4/6
In the real world of business, a document would NEVER be mailed unless it is in proper format, grammatically correct, and error free (i.e. mailable). Using a rubric to determine mailablility, analysis of Fall Semester 2013 Business Communications Writing Assignments 1 5 indicated 66% of the students created "mailable" documents in one attempt. May 5, Prior to the first writing assignment, the instructor will require students in the Business Communications course to complete language arts activities which focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. These activities will be completed in the classroom. Using a rubric, an analysis of Spring Semester 2014 Business Communications Writing Assignments 1 5 will be made to determine if students can apply language arts skills to create and submit a "mailable" document in one attempt. Using a rubric to determine mailability, analysis of Business Communications Writing Assignments 1 5 from Spring Semester 2014 indicated 74 percent of the students in Business Communications created "mailable" documents in one attempt. Because of the improvement in the percentage of students would could create and submit a mailable document in one attempt, the language arts review activities will become a required part of the Business Communications course. Because these language arts review activities take up a great deal of valuable class time, the instructor will look at other means to incorporate these activities in the future. The percentage of students who can apply language arts skills to create and submit a "mailable" document in one attempt increased by 8%. Save to PDF 5/6
