Being in a centre and learning through ECNZ has enabled me to recognise the theory and child development that is discussed in the programme, and then share these new ways of thinking with my colleagues to strengthen my own journey. The Pouako support me both in class, through the interactive learning environment, but also in our online discussions. For me, knowing that they are there pretty much all the time to support and answer any questions about the assignments is awesome. Being an ECE teacher is fantastic, my days are never the same, sometimes you are the teacher and other times you are the learner. After forming these important relationships with the children, they are open with you and include you in their exploration and their learning. 9 Papers Ngā pepa Paper Title Overview UPG1 20 credits Te Hā o te Ao Māramatanga The teacher as Curriculum Inquirer Leadership in EC settings; multiple perspectives Research contemporary curriculum issues and trends, communicate research insights UPG2 20 credits UPG3 20 credits UPGD Te Hā o te Ao Kōhungahunga Infants and Toddlers Te Hā o te Waihanga Marautanga The Teacher as Critical Pedagogue Te Hā o te Iwi: Mātauranga Māori Teaching and Learning Graduate profile My background: I began the degree in 2012 when my children were 1 and 2 and a half. I had spent the last 11 years living overseas, but knew that I wanted to come home to Aotearoa to study. My tuakana runs a community based ECE centre in Newtown, and two of her team members were students at Te Rito Maioha. She suggested that I study through Te Rito Maioha as she could see the quality education and training that her staff members were receiving. My story: Studying at Te Rito Maioha has had a profound impact on my life. Not only has it given me an industry respected qualification, but it has, I believe, given me the best platform to begin my career as an early childhood teacher. Identity, relationships, perspectives, philosophies, pedagogy, professional role of teacher, learning environments and pedagogical leadership in infants and toddlers EC settings Curriculum design and implementation Planning assessment and evaluation Action, research, self review Ethical stances for curriculum Te ao Māori Tikanga Māori Te reo Māori and related theories of learning, teaching, assessment and research Te Rito Maioha did this by creating a learning environment where I felt safe to share my ideas, ask questions and take ownership of my learning. The lecturers, apart from all being passionate about ECE themselves, also made the learning interactive, engaging and authentic. They truly wanted us all to succeed, and because of this provided amazing support and guidance to make sure that this happened. Whilst apprehensive about the bicultural aspect of the course to begin with, I ended up taking a three year journey of discovery into my own country's history, heritage, and my place within it. I now feel confident and proud of the person I have become and the advocate that I can now be for the children in my country. I guess I was probably pretty green about leadership and I wanted to be able to think about what I was doing and why.
