In a physical game from tip-off, Houston started slow and entered half-time down to Tulane, 34-31, thanks in part to the Green Wave s Janell Burse s 14 points... The Lady Cougar offense got into a rhythm and came alive in the second half... A WIN THIS AFTERNOON... The Lady Cougars are looking to extend their season-high winning streak to four straight with a win over South Florida today... The Lady Cougars current streak marks the first time they ve posted three consecutive wins since last season when they won back-to-back-to-back defeats at UTEP (68-66) on HOUSTON IN C -USA YEAR-BY-YEAR Year Record January 4, against Saint Louis (53-52) on January 7 and against Charlotte (57-52) on January 9... A win today would also be Houston s unprecedented third-straight over a C-USA foe for the first time ever... They have won two straight against C-USA only one other time prior to this season: those consecutive wins against Saint Louis and Charlotte last season... Houston last posted four straight W s during a six-game winning streak from January 25-February 11 of the season... Both DePaul and Tulane are picked to win their respective divisions and compete for the conference title. NO EASY ROAD IN The Lady Cougars have another rugged schedule in , playing as many as 17 of 29 regular season games against teams that participated in post-season tournaments last year, including perennial NCAA powers Georgia and Louisiana Tech... This marks the third straight season that the Lady Cougars play at least 10 teams that participated in post-season play the previous season, with eight of those teams winning their first round tournament game... Seven teams on Houston s schedule qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season and six advanced to the NWIT teams on this year s schedule won 18 or more games last season and 18 teams finished.500 or better. SEASON OUTLOOK: A NEW EXCITEMENT This season marks the first of Curl's three-year reign that the team is comprised primarily of his recruits... Combine that with another strong recruiting season during this past year--one in which high school standout Chandi Jones and sophomore transfer Courtney Pastner joined the Lady Cougars--and Curl is pleased with the team's make-up and confident that the added depth will make a significant difference in winning... This year s roster features nine returnees, including five of them starters from last year, and four newcomers... Two of the newcomers--pastner and and Valerie Muoneke--arrive with junior-college playing experience under their belts... The six transfer players who arrived in Houston last season and had not seen action on the court prior to last season now have a season under their belts as well... With that, every area of play should improve, and Curl and his staff are optimistic about the experience that returnees and transfers alike will contribute. HEAD COACH CURL AND HIS FIRST-YEAR STAFF Houston head coach Joe Curl begins his third season at the helm of the UH women s program... Was named the fifth women s head coach in school history on April 8, This off-season Curl has rebuilt his staff and since they have been busy working to improve the women s program in trying to establish it as one of the premier programs in the conference as well as the country... Curl first bolstered his coaching staff by adding new assistants DeJuena Carter Chizer and Todd Buchanan... Carter Chizer played for the Lady Cougars from , where she was named to the First Team All-Southwest Conference and led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 525 points that season... Also added to the staff is Lesli Vollrath, who played for Curl at Blinn College, as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations... Last year in his second season, Curl and the Lady Cougar team surpassed the previous year s win total in overall games... They achieved their highest-ever seed with a ten seed at the conference tournament... In his first season in , Curl led the Lady Cougars to a 5-22 record, with a total of five losses being by four points or less.
