1 Name: Last First Period: HAMMOCKS MIDDLE SCHOOL Honors Physical Science Dear Parent/Guardian: Welcome to Honors Physical Science! I am very excited to be a part of your child s learning experience. This year, your child s science journey will be full of challenges and triumphs and it is my responsibility to make sure that he/she is challenged to learn and master all the principles contained in our science program. Science is fun and exciting! Throughout the school year, students will have the opportunity to participate in numerous hands-on activities. You may expect to perform one or two lab activities each week. In order to make this year an educational while at the same time an enjoyable one, your support will be greatly appreciated. This packet includes rules, guidelines, important dates as well as information needed for the rest of the school year. A lab safety contract that requires your signature is also attached. All students must abide by this lab safety contract to be able to work in the lab room. All students are recommended to have a planner at the beginning of the school year. It is extremely important that students learn to become organized if they have not yet learned to do so. Completing the planner on a daily basis will allow students to stay up-to-date in all of their classes and not fall behind in case of an absence. Assignments in my class will be written on the board for the entire week. Please make sure your child completes all assignments. Also, take a moment to read and discuss the information contained in this packet with your child and complete the contact information. 3 PHYSICAL SCIENCE HONORS This is a laboratory course that helps the student prepare for the other two required science lab courses in high school. You may expect to perform one or two lab activities each week. All lab reports will be completed in your lab notebook. Before a student may participate in laboratory activities he/she must complete the following three requirements: 1. Provide a Safety Contract that must be signed by both the student and parents. 2. Successfully pass a Safety Quiz. 3. Pay a Lab Fee of $10.00 Notebook Format Every student will be provided with a 2 composition notebooks; one for use as an interactive notebook, the other as a lab notebook. Students are required to have the notebook up-to-date, well-organized class notes, and the table of contents properly completed. The notebooks must be brought to class every day. Materials You are expected to bring these materials to class everyday! 4 Conduct and Procedures All students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings at the beginning of class. If you are out of your seat you will be considered late. All homework assignments should be ready for collection at the beginning of class. The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher does. Do not get out of your seat without permission. You will be assigned a seat, which will not be changed without the teacher s approval. No gum, candy, or food is allowed in class. No grooming is allowed, and appropriate dress is required according to School Dress Code. Clean up your area before leaving class. All trash goes into the garbage can at the end of the period. All paper must go into the recycling paper bin. Students may use the restroom before or after class and will only be allowed to use the restroom during class time if it is an emergency. If you are absent, you are responsible for making up all the work that you missed. Have the teacher s recognition before speaking. Penalties If a student does not complete an assignment due to lack of necessary materials he/she will earn a zero. BE ON TIME! After your third tardy you will receive a detention. Since gum is not allowed in school at any time, you will receive a detention for chewing gum. Results of poor conduct: Warning, Detention, Home contact, and/or referral. Grades are assigned for: Class work (1 grade or more), Homework (1 grade or more), Lab activities and reports (2 grades), Special projects (2 or more), Tests (4 grades), and quizzes (2 grades). A = B = C = D = F less than 1.0 = 59 and below

5 HAMMOCKS MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT GENERAL LAB SAFETY RULES Now that you are in science class, you are probably anxious to work in the lab. But, before you begin, it is important to know the safety methods that must be used to prevent accidents. There are laws and rules that all people, even your teacher, must follow while working in the lab. These laws have been made by your state and county governments to protect science students from both small and large injuries. Read the laws in the next section and learn them. A quiz will be given to determine how ready you are to participate in lab. MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD SAFETY RULES GENERAL Students are REQUIRED to wear safety devices and protective clothing and will take such safeguards as necessary to reduce or eliminate accidents and injuries. REFUSAL OR FAILURE by a student to use or wear such devices, or protective clothing or equipment, shall be grounds for appropriate disciplinary action, including prohibiting them from participation in class activities. EYE PROTECTION DEVICES Florida Statue REQUIRES eye protection devices to be worn by students, teachers, and visitors when the individual is involved in an activity likely to cause injury to the eyes. HAIR PROTECTION In educational activities involving flame, student s hair is to be appropriately BANDED, TIED, or COVERED to protect the hair from catching on fire. FOOT PROTECTION Bare feet, sandals, or footwear exposing the feet, are not permissible during activities requiring foot protection, such as chemical laboratory work. GENERAL LABORATORY SAFETY METHODS The experiments that you will do in science will depend on the type of science that you are studying at the time. These are some general safety rules, which apply to all science classes at one time, or another. It is important for you to understand that many pieces of science equipment and types of chemicals used in a lab can hurt YOU or ANOTHER STUDENT if proper use of these materials is not learned. The following list contains many important safety rules, but your teacher may often give you more specific rules before beginning a lab. These should ALWAYS be followed when working in the lab.

6 1. Horseplay in the lab can cause a serious accident before you realize what is happening, so you MUST have perfect behavior at all times. 2. While it is impossible to be completely silent when working in the lab. The noise level must not get so loud that you can t hear any directions that your teacher gives you. 3. Never mix chemicals just to see what happens. Never experiment on your own. Your teacher will give the proper directions for the use of chemicals in each lab. 4. Most lab equipment and supplies are very expensive, so it is important that you learn the proper use and care. 5. Always use safety goggles when working with the flame, strong chemicals, or hot objects or chemicals. Prescription safety glasses do NOT protect the eyes enough, so goggles must be worn over the glasses. 6. Never smell chemicals directly. Your teacher will demonstrate a wafting motion that is to be used to identify odors. 7. NEVER taste chemicals in the lab. 8. You should know the location of safety equipment, such as fire extinguisher, eye wash fountain, and safety shower. Inform your teacher of an accident. NO MATTER HOW SMALL. IMMEDIATELY. 9. You must wear shoes that protect your feet completely. No open toe or open heeled shoes may be worn in the lab. These types of shoes expose parts of the feet, which may be harmed by an accidental spillage of chemicals or hot liquids. 10. Lab equipment, especially glassware, remains hot for a long time after removing it from a hot plate or flame, so you should use safety materials like tongs or hot pad gloves to pick up the equipment after it has been heated. 11. Long hair, MUST BE TIED behind the head. This is to prevent accidentally tossing the hair into a flame. Hair will burn quickly. 12. It is dangerous to eat or drink from any lab equipment. There may be residue of chemicals in the equipment that could hurt you. NEVER EAT OR DRINK IN THE LAB. 13. After a lab is completed, you must carefully clean the equipment and the work area so that the next group can begin to work without cleaning after you. THE LAB IS NOT OVER UNTIL THE LAB HAS BEEN CLEANED.

7 HAMMOCKS MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE LAB FORMAT SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Write all lab reports in the lab composition notebook in blue or black ink. Pencil is only acceptable for graphs. 2. Do not use personal pronouns (I, he, she, we, and they). 3. Always use a ruler when creating tables and graphs. 4. Write using past tense when completing the Data/Results & Conclusion section. 5. Always use the lab format to complete your lab report. 6. All answers to written questions must be highlighted. Lab experiment number PROBLEM: is stated in the form of a question (do not use personal pronouns).example: What is the effect of color light on plant growth? BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The research information gathered from the textbook or lab sheet. HYPOTHESIS: A prediction of what will happen in the experiment. Must be an if and then statement and created before the start of the experiment and after reading the lab handout. MATERIALS: List all the materials necessary to conduct the experiment. Make sure you indicate quantity and size. Be specific. Correct: 1-Celsius thermometer Incorrect: thermometer PROCEDURE: List the steps that were followed in the lab in order to complete the experiment. DATA/RESULTS: Record the observations that were seen happening using a table or graph. Include data tables, graphs, and sketches if needed. Data tables and graphs should be labeled appropriately (title and correct units). It should be written in the past tense and stating what happened during the experiment. Answer any questions on the lab in this section. Note: Title and label diagrams and pictures. Measurements should be specific, accurate and units should ALWAYS be labeled! CONCLUSION: It should be written in past tense. The conclusion should answer the following questions: What was investigated? What was the hypothesis? Did the results support the hypothesis? What were some possible sources for error? How can this experiment be improved? How can this activity be applied to real life? Date

I will carefully read ALL directions before starting the lab. I will follow ALL written and oral directions exactly. I will only do lab activities while at the lab station. I will return lab materials and clean up my lab station before being dismissed. I will complete the required lab report in the appropriate format. I will complete all written work in blue or black ink only! I will keep an up-to-date notebook with dividers. I will complete all assignments on time. I will not chew gum; eat candy or food in class. I will not groom myself during class. I will pay attention in class. I will be responsible for any work I miss when I am absent.
