1 North Alabama Business Leaders Summit on Early Childhood Investment Speakers and Panelists Gloria Batts, Co-Founder Village of Promise Gloria Batts is a native of Huntsville, Alabama where she was educated in the parochial and public school systems. Presently, she serves as Co-Founder of Village of Promise. Village of Promise (VoP) was created as a non-profit organization to address the needs of children in distressed, high poverty neighborhoods with a vision to expand the success realized to other neighborhoods in Huntsville and Madison County over time. The goal of VoP is to support current successful programs and implement new, high-quality projects that improve the educational outcomes for children and transform neighborhoods. Gloria believes every child has the right to a superior education and to be nurtured by a responsible caring adult. Gloria has a twenty year tenure with the State of Alabama Department of Industrial Relations and is the former owner and president of Alpha Management Resource Group, Inc. a personnel staffing agency. She is the past president of the American Cancer Society Huntsville/ Madison County Division. In 1998, Gloria received the Democratic nomination for the office of Alabama State Senator and was narrowly defeated by her Republican opposition. She is a member of First Missionary Baptist Church where she serves in the Christian Education Ministry as Bible Teacher, and Deaconess. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and is the mother of one adult son. Phil Dotts, President, Public FA, Inc. Former Chairman, Business Council of Alabama Dotts is the president of Public FA, Inc., an independent Financial Advisor to public, nonprofit, and corporate debt issuers. Dotts formed PFA in 2000 after spending 25 years in corporate and public finance work, including stints with bank holding companies in North Carolina and Alabama and as a partner in a regional investment banking firm. Public FA has clients in more than 30 states that include states, state agencies, cities, utility boards, universities, airport authorities and housing authorities in addition to corporate clients such as Fannie Mae and Tenet Healthcare. Dotts is a past chairman of the Business Council of Alabama, which represents over 5,000 businesses in the state and currently serves as Secretary and on the Executive Committee. Dotts also serves on the boards of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, Exchange Bank of Alabama and First Commercial Bank. He also serves on the boards of Leadership Alabama, the A+ College Ready Governing Board, and is chair of Neighborhood Concepts, Inc., a Huntsville- based non-profit housing development corporation of affordable housing. He is a 1972 graduate of Davidson College with a degree in economics, a 1980 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University, and received a National Science Foundation award to study economics at the University of Minnesota. Dotts has been married to Kathleen, an English teacher at Huntsville High School, for more than 38 years. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah, both of whom were married in Dr. Robert H. Dugger, Managing Partner, Hanover Investment Group Advisory Board Chair, Partnership for America s Economic Success Dr. Dugger has had a long and varied career in business and public service. He is now the managing partner of Hanover Investment Group, a boutique private equity and investment analysis company. Previously, Dr. Dugger was a partner in Tudor Investment Corporation for fifteen years. Tudor is a global asset management company active in currency, bond, equity, and commodity market trading and venture capital investment worldwide. Dr. Dugger is an expert on government policy assessment and the effects of policy on domestic and global markets and financial institutions.

2 Prior to Tudor, Dr. Dugger served as Policy Director at the American Bankers Association, where he facilitated a panel of bank officials in developing a plan that became the RTC and the solution to the U.S. Savings & Loan problem. Dr. Dugger began his career at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in the early 1970s and served as a senior staff member of both the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee in the 1980s. Dr. Dugger's philanthropic commitments are in two areas - investing early in the lives of American children, and wildlife conservation in Africa. In the United States, Dr. Dugger is a founder of the Partnership for America's Economic Success, chairman of the Invest in Kids Working Group, and a Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development - all projects focused on ascertaining and communicating the economic growth and job creation value of investing early in the lives of children. In his home state of Virginia, Dr. Dugger is a board member of Smart Beginnings, a member of Governor Kaine's Strong Start Pre-Kindergarten Council, served as co-chair of Governor Warner's Virginia Early Learning Council, and is a founding board member of the Alexandria Community Trust. In Africa, Dr. Dugger is board chairman of Grumeti Reserves Ltd., a Tanzanian eco-tourism company organized to preserve the Wildebeest migration route in a 450,000 acre game reserve adjacent to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Grumeti's commercial tourism activities are done in partnership with the world's number-one rated hospitality company Singita Game Reserves Dr. Dugger is also vice chairman of its NGO affiliate, the Grumeti Community and Conservation Fund. Dr. Dugger received his BA from Davidson College and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Federal Reserve Dissertation Fellowship. The Honorable Paul Finley, Mayor City of Madison, Alabama A native of Kentucky, Paul graduated from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, with a B.S. in Marketing and is married to Dr. Julie Finley, an assistant principal at Bob Jones High School. They have three boys Tyler, Tanner, and Kyle. During his professional career, Paul has enjoyed multiple opportunities for success, ranging from his early days in door-to-door insurance sales to serving as Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Telecordia Technology, leading the company from a little known entity to a multi-million dollar industry leader. Paul then had the opportunity to join locally founded Advanced Optical Systems (AOS) where he gained additional valuable experience in government contracting industry. In 2004, Paul launched Fins Marketing to fill a need for sales and marketing expertise in the local business community. This entrepreneurial venture has allowed him to be more active in his boys lives, contribute time and expertise to the community, and support many local business owners in reaching sales and marketing goals. Paul, Julie and the boys are proud to call Madison home and look forward to serving the entire community even more in the future. Colonel John S. Hamilton, Garrison Commander Redstone Arsenal, Alabama Colonel John S. Hamilton is from Tallahassee, Florida. He entered active duty as a second lieutenant in August 1990 following commissioning through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Florida State University. He arrives at Redstone Arsenal having recently graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. His previous assignments include: platoon leader positions in the 407th Supply and Transport Battalion and the 782 nd Main Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division; Aide-de-Camp at the Defense Personnel Support Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; General Supply Officer in 1st Armored Division (Bad Kreuznach, Germany); Company Commander in the 123rd Main Support Battalion, 1st Armored Division (Dexheim, Germany); Division Parachute Officer, Support Operations Officer, and Executive Officer in the 782nd

3 Main Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division; Joint Logistics Plans Officer (J4), Joint Special Operations Command; Battalion Commander, 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd BCT, 82nd Airborne Division; and Assistant XO to the Commanding General, Army Materiel Command. His operational deployments include Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR (1996), Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (2002, 2005), and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM ( , ). Colonel Hamilton s education includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Florida State University, a Master of Science in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University. His military education and training includes Command and General Staff Officer Course, Logistics Executive Development Course, Support Operations Course, Jumpmaster Course, Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, Aerial Delivery and Materiel Officer Course, Ranger Course, and Quartermaster Officer Basic Course. Colonel Hamilton and his wife, Melinda, have two children, Walker (10) and Rebekah (8). Pam Hudson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer Crestwood Medical Center A Board Certified Family Practitioner, Dr. Hudson serves as Chief Executive Officer of Crestwood Medical Center. She is the first physician named as CEO of a hospital in our area. In her 25 years at Crestwood Medical Center, she has served in many other capacities including Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hudson is a graduate of Huntsville High School and received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her Family Practice Internship and Residency at the School of Primary Medical Care at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where she served her year as Chief Resident. She has advanced certification in Medical Management from Tulane University and held Diplomat status with the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians for over 10 years. Dr. Hudson has extensive experience in healthcare accreditation, physician credentialing, peer review and performance improvement. Dr. Hudson is currently the President of the Board of the National Children s Advocacy Center. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Huntsville /Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Hudson is also a graduate of Leadership Huntsville Madison County Class 13 and serves on several community boards including the Phoenix Board; Bancorp South Advisory Board; The ALS Association Alabama Chapter Board; and the John Stallworth Foundation Board. She is also a member of the Women s Economic Development Council and the Huntsville Community Chorus. In 2010, Dr. Hudson was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from UA Huntsville. Anthony R. (Tony) Jones, Lt. General (Ret), U.S. Army Vice President, Huntsville Site Executive Strategic Missile & Defense Systems Division, The Boeing Company Retired Lt. Gen. Anthony R. (Tony) Jones was named vice president and senior site executive for Boeing Huntsville in July 2008, responsible for overall operation of the Boeing Huntsville site. Huntsville is host to business activities that include aviation and missile defense, space, and homeland security, employing almost 3,000 people. Boeing is the largest aerospace company in Alabama and one of the state s largest private employers, executing critical defense and space programs, including the Ground-based Midcourse Defense program for the Department of Defense, and key components of the Ares crew launch vehicle for NASA. Huntsville also supports International Space Station, Brigade Combat Team Systems, Patriot

4 Advanced Capability-3, Aegis Standard Missile-3, Avenger, Arrow, and SBInet. Jones joined The Boeing Company in 2006 after a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant General. In his previous position as vice president for Training Systems and Services (TSS), his responsibilities included leadership, growth and execution for Boeing military training programs. These included Mission Training Centers with distributed, networked capability, aircrew and maintenance (fixed wing and rotorcraft) trainers and simulations mission planning and rehearsal systems, training support and other instructional training systems for both air and ground combat systems. Prior to joining Boeing, Jones served as Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va. There he was a senior leader responsible for ensuring the Army s success in accessing and training soldiers, developing leaders at all echelons, and developing capabilities for the future force. Prior to that, Jones was Chief of Staff at Headquarters, U.S. Army, Europe and Seventh Army, and Commander of the Army Aviation Warfighting Center. Jones brings a wide range of operational and management experience to Boeing seasoned by leadership and senior staff positions throughout his military career. His extensive aviation expertise was developed through a multitude of assignments in peace and war, to include Special Operations. In the Pentagon, Jones served as the Director of Current Operations for HQ US Army, and in the J3, Joint Staff, as the Deputy Director of Operations. Jones was commissioned as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program at Indiana University. He also holds a master s degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. Lee Marshall, Founder Kids to Love News Anchor, WHNT News 19 Lee Marshall is an Emmy award winning journalist. She has delivered the news to the Tennessee Valley for 13 of her 16 years in television news. Lee is from South Fulton, Tennessee but has made North Alabama her home. Lee joined the WHNT News 19 team in May 2011, and anchors WHNT News 19 at 6:30 every night with Jerry Hayes. Lee anchored the morning and noon news for WAFF 48 News for 10 years, she is glad the new gig is in the P.M.!!! Whether on or off-camera, Lee commits herself to sharing stories that make a difference. Many viewers know Lee not just for her TV presence, but for her dedication to local foster children through her Kids to Love Foundation. Kids to Love is a non-profit organization Lee started in 2004, which meets the immediate needs of foster children. Lee has impacted the lives of more than 100,000 foster children through Kids to Love s outreach efforts. Kids to Love TV segments have found Forever Families for more than 200 foster children. For Lee, it's personal. She was born into foster care and adopted by a loving family. That s why Lee makes it her mission to find every foster child a place to call home. Lee has received numerous honors for her work both in journalism and non-profit. The National Academy of Arts and Sciences presented Lee with an Emmy Award for her community service. She has been named an Angel in Adoption by the U.S. Congress and was a national finalist for the Energizer Keep it Going award in Lee is also an advisor to the National Foster Parent Association s Board of Directors. If that wasn t enough to keep Lee busy, she is also an accomplished singer/songwriter. With two CD s to her credit, she has shared her music from Alabama to Australia. Lee's greatest accomplishment is her family. She and her husband Jeff have been married for 16 years. They have two daughters, Ella and Emma. Scott McLain, Managing Broker Coldwell Banker Commercial McClain Real Estate

5 Scott is Managing Broker of the Coldwell Banker Commercial McLain Real Estate, and has been active in commercial real estate for more than 26 years. He is the active at the state and national level in the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), and has served as a member of Coldwell Banker Commercial s National Advisory Board. He is also Chair of its global Retail Group. McLain is a retail developer, advocate for downtown redevelopment, and proponent of adaptive reuse of existing real estate improvements. Very active in local, state, and national civic, political, and professional activities, McLain holds a degree in Public Policy from Duke University and a Juris Doctor degree from Cumberland School of Law. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design Advanced Management Development Program (AMDP) in commercial real estate. McLain has several times been named Coldwell Banker Commercial s top producer in the State of Alabama. Donald W. Nalley, Jr., Director Beason & Nalley, Inc. Mr. Nalley is an Owner/Director with Beason & Nalley, Inc., resident in the firm s Huntsville, Alabama office. He currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He became a CPA in 1980, Certified Financial Planner in 1987, a Certified Valuation Analyst in 1993, and received an Accredited Senior Advisor (ASA) designation with the American Society of Appraisers in He was formerly a tax manager with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. His 30 years as a consultant advising individuals and businesses, together with over 7 years that Beason & Nalley has focused on the government contracting industry has enabled him to better provide a full spectrum of services to the clients he serves. Mr. Nalley began his career with PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 1978, spending his first year in the audit department building a general foundation in accounting systems and processes. A transfer to the tax group gave him the opportunity to handle some of the firm s largest clients in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida office. After progressing to senior in 1981 and manager in 1983, Mr. Nalley joined Beason & Nalley in 1984 as the firm was buying out its first generation partners. He became a partner a year later. In 1987, he expanded the practice by offering financial planning services to the firm s client base and business valuation services in Mr. Nalley has worked and managed major clients and engagements in and related to individual income tax matters, including income tax, estate and gift tax; business tax matters, including federal returns, multi-state returns, and IRS audits; business valuation, due diligence and business value goal planning; and litigation support related to business valuation and accounting matters. He focuses on business value planning, small business valuation and litigation support. Mr. Nalley graduated magna cum laude and with honors from the University of Alabama with a major in accounting. During his career, Mr. Nalley has attended and instructed numerous lectures and seminars. He serves as a board member for numerous academic, civic and charitable organizations. Carlos D. Butch Pair, Major General (Ret) U.S. Army Butch Pair, a native of Alabama, graduated from Jacksonville State University with a degree in Business Administration in 1970 and entered the US Army as a Quartermaster Officer where he served in Germany. Later he commanded a Company at Fort Knox KY. He commanded again at Battalion and Brigade level and was selected for Flag rank in BG Pair was selected as Deputy CDR, Military Traffic Management Command, Arlington, VA. In 2000, he was selected as one of the Chairman s Ten and became the first Chief of Staff for United States Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, IL. In 2005 MG Pair was selected as the first Defense Business Systems Acquisition Executive, Business Transformation Agency at the Pentagon, Arlington, VA. In 2007 MG Pair was deployed as Director of CENTCOM s Deployment Distribution Operations Center, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait responsible for all inter-and-intra theater movements for Southwest Asia. In 2008 MG Pair served a back-to-back deployment as Deputy, Joint Task Force, Business Stability Operations, Baghdad, Iraq. He graduated from The National War College, The Army War College, and Syracuse University. He has spoken at numerous Universities, among them, Texas Christian University, Missouri, DePaul, Penn State, US Military Academy at West Point, Saint Louis University, and Southern IL University. Major General (Ret) Pair retired from Active Duty in April, 2009 after 37 years of service and returned to Alabama.

6 Butch and his wife Jean make their home in Hoover, AL south of Birmingham, Alabama. They have one daughter, Sacha of Homewood, AL. After retirement, Butch Pair joined Celerant Government Services, Inc. full time in July He is assigned to the Leadership team and reports directly to the President of the Company out of Boston, MA. MG Pair is also a founding partner in Mission: Ready Alabama, an initiative of the Alabama Partnership for Children. Tim Singleton, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer Worthington Federal Bank Tim Singleton Jr. is the President, Chief Executive Officer of Worthington Federal Bank, a $180 million community financial institution headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Singleton has had a 30 year career in banking including as Managing Director of the Federal Contractor Lending group for RBC Bank USA, City President for First American Bank Huntsville, Northern Region Senior Lender for Colonial Bank, Senior Lender for the Houston Region and Huntsville region and other leadership and sales management positions for Wachovia Bank (and through acquisition SouthTrust Bank). He graduated from the University of Houston in Mr. Singleton serves as Vice President of the Schools Foundation, President of the Hampton House, founder/lead teacher of The Upper Room (a Willowbrook Church ministry), member of the Committee of 100, and is a Leadership Graduate and the co-founder of Leadership s Connect program. Beth Sippel, Executive Vice President First Commercial Bank Beth Sippel is an Executive Vice President at First Commercial Bank where she serves as the Sales Manager and Retail Banking Lead. She is responsible for leading the overall sales program for the bank and accountable for the strategic, business and financial goals of the retail, small business, marketing and operations areas of the bank. Beth has 19 years of banking experience and is a graduate of Albion College in Michigan where she earned a BA in Economics/Management and French. Beth is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Women s Business Center of North Alabama and CASA of Madison County. Beth is the Board Chair-elect for the United Way of Madison County and served as the 2010 United Way Campaign Chair. She is a member of the Women s Economic Development Council (WEDC) and a Graduate of Leadership Huntsville Class 21. Beth is married with two college aged children and lives in Madison, AL where she enjoys gardening and playing tennis. Timothy Stewart, M.D., Senior Partner Huntsville Pediatric Associates Tim Stewart is currently senior partner for Huntsville Pediatric Associates, the largest pediatric practice in Madison County, and president of Fair Advantage Consortium, a physician group purchasing organization. Dr. Stewart serves on the board for the Medical Association of Alabama, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and the Alabama State Committee of Public Health. He is a past president of the Madison County Medical Society and board member for the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sam Yeager, Principal Bristol Development, LLC Sam Yeager is a native of Alabama and is an entrepreneur who has been integral in the start up of a number of successful businesses in real estate, senior living and skilled nursing, acute care hospitals and test and measurement technology. He is the co-founder of Bristol Development Group of Franklin, Tennessee which has developed over 6,000 apartment and condominium units over the last ten years. Mr. Yeager is a CPA who began his career with Arthur Andersen and Company in Atlanta, GA. He received his BS in accounting from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas in 1974.

7 He and his wife Angie have three grown children and they reside in Huntsville. History of Business Leadership on Early Childhood Investment In 2009, the Business Council of Alabama, Chamber of Commerce Association, Alabama School Readiness Alliance, and the Alabama Partnership for Children received a grant from the Partnership for America s Economic Success to host the first Alabama Business Leaders Summit on Early Childhood Investment in Birmingham. Partners also committed to long-term education and awareness efforts about the economic benefits of early childhood investments and the impact on education outcomes, crime, and economic vitality. Following the 2009 Summit, the message was shared at five Leadership Exchange Dinners across the state hosted by the Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, and the Alabama Partnership for Children awarded grants for regional summits in four areas of the state. At the Business Council s annual Governmental Affairs Conference, early childhood investment was on the agenda. In 2010, the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics joined the Alabama School Readiness Alliance, the Alabama Partnership for Children and numerous River Region partners in planning the second state summit in Montgomery. The Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama joined as a sponsor through a grant from the Partnership for American s Economic Success for the event in the capital city in early Today s event will launch the work being done in the community to implement the Blueprint for Zero to Five. Through a grant from Boeing, the Alabama Partnership for Children and the Alabama School Readiness Alliance will provide technical assistance and support for community leaders to implement this indicators-based approach and develop a comprehensive and research-based plan for the most effective investments in early childhood.
