Lets create a simulation with Captivate We are going to train a learner on how to use Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 Captivate step 2 Open Captivate and select record new movie. We will make a Training Simulation We will import a video resources and squeeze it We will import an.avi file Convert the.avi file to both a 512K_streaming.flv file and then a medium_progressive.swf file Captivate can use both the.avi and the.swf formats Breeze can use the.flv file Captivate before we begin Check your Windows PC setup Captivate step 3 Select Application and click OK. Open Sorenson Squeeze Open Captivate Don t worry about recording audio at this point we will do that after our Captivate capture or we will import some prepared audio content. Captivate step 1 Open Sorenson Squeeze Captivate step 4 The record specific window opens 4

Captivate step 5 Select Sorenson Squeeze from the menu Captivate step 7 Select the appropriate.swf and.flv compression Captivate step 6 Select the Training Simulation recording mode Captivate step 8 Check the compression settings Captivate Step 7 Import the.avi file into the job setting dialog box Captivate step 9 Double click each compression settings 5

Captivate step 10 Check the settings for video and audio values Captivate step 13 Lets review all the things we have captured with Captivate while recording the process within Sorenson Squeeze. We want to make a Training Simulation, more than just a demonstration or assessment simulation Within our captivate project we have the basic outline structure. We need to add more interactivity and measurable assessments. Captivate step 11 We will Squeeze the file. Effectively converting it from the original.avi source into both an.swf and an.flv format. Captivate step 14 What was captured and what was created for us. Slide (screen) captures Captions Click boxes A timeline To this we will add interactivity and assessments Captivate step 12 Compression time will take only a few minutes. Captivate step 15 Slide (screen) captures all of those things we were doing in Sorenson Squeeze were captured for us visually and given to us a canvas on which to further illustrate points, reinforce processes and clarify instructions or workflow. 6

Captivate step 16 Captions (text or rollover) tools or mechanisms to draw attention to or focus a learner on a specific task, process or workflow. Created manually or automatically they can be customized in appearance or localized for multilanguage support. Captivate step 19 Lets add a voice over at the point where we first import the source.avi, this should be slide #2. Select the Record Audio button to open the Record Audio window. Simply record into your microphone something like From the file drop down menu select Import source. Lets do the same for slides 3 and 4. Captivate step 17 Click boxes selectable areas that reinforce a function, workflow or process by requiring the learner to select a menu, button or area on the screen, providing feedback on that selection and then determining what should happen after the success or failure of that selection. Captivate step 20 Lets modify the reporting tabs for slides 2,3 and 4 We need to customize the interaction ID for each step with something that is simple and easy to understand by the instructor when evaluating the successful completion of these steps by the learner. Captivate step 18 A timeline A beautiful thing, this time based timeline allows you to better synchronize or modify the sequence of events going on in your simulation to best reflect that which you are trying to instruct your learner on. Captivate step 21 Double click on the click box within each of these slides and select the reporting tab and modify the interaction ID. 7

Captivate step 22 Measurable values within your Captivate application. Reportable ID s Objective overall goal of this content material Interaction measure of learner involvement Weight relative importance of a question We set these values by inserting Click box, Text entry box or a Button manually or Captivate does this for us when creating an Assessment or Training Simulation. Refer to the Captivate help system for more information. Captivate step 25 Quiz assessment question 1 Multiple choice question, question tab: Q: What version of Sorenson Squeeze are we using? Possible Answers: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.1 Options tab keep the defaults Reporting tab: change Interaction ID to Q1mc and the time limit to 30 seconds (00:00:30). Captivate step 23 Interaction ID s When not using a dedicated LMS/LCMS, I often rename the interaction ID to something very obvious like Selecting Import Source for our example in Slide #2 of this exercise. But if your LMS recommends a specific format please use that specification. Use a naming convention that works for you and stick to it. Captivate step 26 Quiz assessment question 2 Matching question, question tab: Q: What formats did we output from Sorenson Squeeze? Possible answers:.flv,.avi,.mov,.asf,.swf,.dvx. Options tab keep the defaults Reporting tab: change Interaction ID to Q2match and the time limit to 30 seconds (00:00:30). Captivate step 24 Quiz assessment We will now test our learners knowledge on the process they just went through using Sorenson Squeeze by asking them a few questions. Lets insert a few questions at the end of our current slides by selecting the insert menu and choosing Question Slide ; we will insert 3 questions of different types. Captivate step 27 Quiz assessment question 3 Short Answer, question tab: Q: What is the final button you click on in Sorenson Squeeze to convert the files you imported to the final.flv or.swf file format??? Options tab keep the defaults Reporting tab: change Interaction ID to Q2match and the time limit to 30 seconds (00:00:30). 8

Captivate step 28 The Quiz Manager, 1 of 2 Captivate step 31 Let publish. From the file menu select Publish From the menu select Movie from the dop down menu select Quiz Manager. On the Reporting tab select Enable output options and choose SCORM. On the Quiz tab under the quiz options select the Required drop down menu list and choose: Required the user must take this quiz to continue. Captivate step 29 The Quiz Manager, 2 of 2 Captivate step 32 Within the Publish window we will output a flash file (.swf) with elearning output enabled. There are many other options available to you under the Quiz Manager settings, we will discuss some of these, more information can be found on the Captivate help system, the Captivate product portal at macromedia.com. The elearning portal at macromedia.com also has information regarding these and related topics. Captivate step 30 Add another slide, a simple blank slide and some text telling the learner that the simulation and quiz is complete and they are done. Captivate step 33 What have we published from Captivate. squeeze example.swf An.swf file representing captivate content in flash form Squeeze example.htm An html file with all html and jscript for use with an LMS imsmanifest.xml metadata describing the content we created A folder labeled: SCORM support These files are needed to pass the tracking data via the flash player/plugin to the LMS API in a standards compliant format (AICC, SCORM 1.2 / 2004, etc ) 9

Notes on Captivate 1 of 3 Remember Notes on Captivate with Breeze Comm Server Plan your project and don t create a simulation on what your client wants. Create a simulation more on what Captivate can do and the capabilities of what your clients computer can do. Windows setup Display properties Set fonts sizes and font attributes for clarity and readability of text. Set to what you test and find best but changing from 96dpi to 120dpi makes text larger and does not impact the overall file size. Movie background image and color. Get rid of the desktop image or scheme and match the background color to that of the Captivate playback control area. Playback control areas are typically created after the fact, by resizing the movie to accommodate it. Select the background color for the playback controls at the Windows Display Settings level (mentioned above), the playbar can be displayed in a "custom" area that is created before actual recording by sizing the "capture area" to include the application window as well as a "blank" area of the pre selected color, to be used later for the playback controls. Create a Searchable Repository Publish to the Breeze Communications Server Creates a repository of all your assets Enable Include Breeze metadata preference The B.C.S. tracks the following aggregate reports Content effectiveness Content data reports The last time content was viewed Notes on Captivate 2 of 3 Remember Bonus Captivate Softskills Simulation Issues that impact your file size: While Windows "XP" color schema is pretty, with its many shades and gradients on title bars and menus, it is not necessarily conducive to good project production. In short, the more color gradients, the higher the video quality of your Captivate project will have to be set. So a part of the planning stage should at least include discussion of whether the movie might be better if the Windows "Classic" desktop were used, instead of the default "XP" setting (right click desktop > Properties > Appearance tab). By using Windows Classic scheme and while doing so, making title bars a single color instead of the two color option in most cases we can record the project, then change the Video Quality setting for all slides from "High" (default) to "Standard" (lowest), resulting in enormous savings in image file size, thus project output size. This can make a huge difference in the "stream ability" of the final product. The Windows XP default settings, the color gradients may be too many, and too close together, to allow reducing the "High" video quality setting without adversely affecting the background images in the movie. Use the Windows standard color chart, or at least to stay within the 256 color "Netscape Color Chart except when required to meet specs for logos or trademarked company colors, I suggest avoiding "custom" colors. Time permitting at the end of the Breeze section we will deconstruct a softskills simulation. Softskills instruction and training is a growing segment within the elearning market providing situation based learning with multiple options for response. Situational simulations can include Role Play, Sales Processes, and Business decision making and analysis. Notes on Captivate 3 of 3 Lets create with Breeze Issues that impact your file size: How much screen real estate do you have?? How will the simulation/demonstration output size impact bandwidth issues, considering the delivery method being planned? How will the simulation/demonstration fit on the end user's lowest common denominator screen size and resolution? Shrinking to fit always results in a loss of image quality, particularly with regard to text that is a part of the recorded background. It also increases the size of the finished SWF. Audio or not?: Bandwidth issues are paramount. I've seen simulation/demonstration with full audio, created for end users who might not have speakers on their PCs. Perhaps the simulation/demonstration can be more effective without audio? Even when audio is required, have shorter audio files been considered? Or very selective audio placed at Object level vs. Slide level, duplicating caption text?? 11

Lets create training with Breeze We are going to present information on, then test a learner s knowledge of Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 Breeze step 3 Lets add an audio voice over to our file select Record Audio from the Breeze menu. We will create material based on a.ppt file, add more informative content (audio, flash movies) and quiz questions. We will discuss tracking options Via Breeze (presentations courses curriculum) and LMS tracking and related standards and issues. Breeze step 1 Open the just squeeze.ppt file. Breeze step 4 First we need to make sure that our audio level is at an adequate setting for recording. These dialogs will check that and confirm the recording level of any microphone you may be using. If OK than the dialog will go GREEN otherwise you will get another dialog box to follow. Breeze step 2 The just squeeze.ppt file contains basic overview material on Sorenson Squeeze 4.1. This will server as the foundation of our Breeze presentation material on which we will test the learner. Breeze step 5 In the Record Audio dialog select the red recording button and read the text on the screen. The View script button would show any notes within the.ppt file if they exist; great for using as a script, for pronunciation or technical jargon. 12

Breeze step 6 During the recording process just speak normally and if you make a mistake just hit stop recording and begin again. If you import notes you can modify them and export the changes back into the.ppt file using the Export Script button. Breeze step 9 The insert menu has options for impacting the pace and playback of your presentation. Breeze step 7 Lets edit our audio file. Breeze step 10 Insert Silence is one way to impact playback allowing flash movies (.swf) to play; depending on what the flash content does and on the overall playback application controls. Breeze step 8 The audio editor allows us to modify our recording. Both the duration and timing can be changed as well as additional functions that impact the playback of our application. Breeze step 11 Insert Recordings improves your workflow allowing you to add or replace audio directly within the audio editor timeline, NO NEED to go back to the breeze menu in.ppt. 13

Breeze step 12 Insert command allows you to add some level of branching to the application. The default is Wait for User, Goto slide allows branching to a slide outside of the sequential slide order. Breeze step 15 From the dialog select the SQdemo.swf file Breeze step 13 Lets add a slide, at the end of our current set, where we can show a flash movie that demonstrates a typical workflow using Sorenson Squeeze 4.1. Breeze step 16 Once placed within your.ppt file position and resize the file as needed. SQdemo.swf is a simulation file created with Captivate that we can place onto slide 7. A captivate file placed within a.ppt file in this manner will not pass tracking data to the breeze server reports. It is just not architected to do so. Served from the Breeze Comm. Server on its own a captivate file will pass tracking data to the reports when using the AICC specification. Breeze step 14 From the Breeze menu select Insert Flash Notes on inserting.swf files into Powerpoint When NOT using the Breeze Presenter Plug in for Powerpoint, the best way of inserting Captivate SWF files into PPT slides is to use SwiffPointPlayer. It s a free PPT plugin and it does an excellent job of correctly sizing and playing inserted SWF files when slide browsing or in slide show mode If you have the Breeze Presenter Plugin then use the Insert Flash menu option. Using the SwiffPointPlayer to insert a.swf file and publishing to Breeze will give you broken or unexpected results and is not supported. 14

Notes on Breeze Content From the Learner s point of view using Breeze Presenter is an asynchronous experience allowing individuals to proceed independently. Breeze step 19 Within the Quiz Manager dialog select Edit Quiz Settings Created for you the developer are constructs that allow you to track certain types of interaction from the BCS or an LMS, later we will explore this. After inserting questions we will examine the measurable/trackable output and supporting files. Breeze step 17 Add another slide announcing that we are entering the testing section of our material. Breeze step 20 Within the Quiz Settings make the quiz required and match your setting to that set below, click OK. Breeze step 18 From the Powerpoint menu select Breeze and from the drop down menu choose Quiz Manager Breeze step 21 Within the Quiz Manager dialog select Add New Questions add 3 questions; 1 each multiple choice, Matching and Fill in the blank. 15

Breeze step 22 Our next step is to examine each question and their settings as we insert them into our project. Breeze step 25 The final question is fill in the blank, match your settings to that below. Breeze step 23 The first question is multiple choice, match your settings to that below. Breeze step 26 We need to make sure that we rename our questions using a naming convention that is practical and easy to understand. This makes it easy to track the results in an LMS or a report that uses the interaction name ID. This data is held in a trackdta.xml generated and stored via the publishing process. Breeze step 24 The second question is matching, match your settings to that below. Breeze step 27 Here is the trackdta.xml file with ID s in yellow. 16

Breeze step 28 On the BCS its easy to identify the questions as we are the OEM, viewing reports and data mining very obvious and intuitive via Dashboards. Breeze step 31 Custom report from Lotus LearningSpace (AICC) Breeze step 29 When viewing reports downloaded from breeze or data on your LMS via SCORM or AICC standards the naming convention is valuable. Even though we see interaction id in the report below, downloaded from the BCS, the name field is our re named ID value, the C column is unique to BCS. Breeze step 32 What data does breeze create for you? Breeze manifest.xml viewer.swf the flash movie that loads the content srchdata.xml searchable text data on the slides and notes trackdta.xml interaction data for the questions inserted timings.xml time to wait for slides with or without audio vconfig.xml UI elements of the breeze application imsmanifest.xml This is the packing list for all the files created Various.xsd files (xml schema) files that support IMS meta data specifications and standards Breeze step 30 Sample report from Lotus LearningSpace (AICC) Breeze step??
