CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will examine graphic design as used in advertising, corporate identity, video, billboards and print media. Utilizing Illustrator, PhotoShop and Quark software, students will apply principles of color theory, layout and typography to take their ideas from concept to finished print quickly and professionally. This course may be taken two times. Two hours lecture, four hours lab per week. 2 ART 158 Commercial Graphic Design Page 2 COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: Communication (personal expression and information acquisition) information competency 1. demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of art and design, board and computer designing, fonts, papers and printing processes through their application to project designs, group discussion, presentations and critiques in class. This is to enable students to apply in these standards to future designs and employment opportunities 2. apply college level vocabulary, commercial design terminology, and proper grammar to projects, during critiques and discussions, for the purposes of successfully navigating a transferable level course Creative, Critical, and Analytical Thinking 1. critically examine and evaluate visual projects, using college level vocabulary and proper grammar, to evaluate creativity, appropriate use of elements and principles of art and design, and problem solving ability as applied to art and design; this is to be accomplished through student participation and interaction in critiques and discussions; this enable students to become familiar with, and apply, these standards to their design projects for application in future classes and employment 2. apply elements and principles of art creatively to projects using various mediums through creation of comprehensive layouts and computer generated designs, enabling the production of portfolio quality designs Technology/Information Competency 1. demonstrate proper use of board and presentation techniques, scanning, and software programs Illustrator, Quark and PhotoShop through creation of assigned design projects; this demonstrates the ability to work within the parameters of these software programs necessary in graphic design 2. demonstrate an understanding, knowledge and sensitivity of type fonts through their usage in project designs and creation of original font; sensitivity to type is essential in graphic design 3. apply papers and printing processes information to project designs

Examination of the qualities of type fonts, their terminology and history
