CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION An introductory survey of the psychological bases and dimensions of human sexuality with emphasis on the socio-cultural factors involved in intimate relating, sexuality, and loving. Three hours lecture per week. CSU;UC CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION An introductory survey of the psychological bases and dimensions of human sexuality with emphasis on the socio-cultural factors involved in intimate relating, sexuality, and loving. CSU;UC COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. analyze and understand human sexuality from the standpoint of both the empirical or research tradition and the experiential or humanistic tradition 2. identify and explain major forms of heterosexual expression and the possible advantages and disadvantages of each 3. explain and distinguish between typical male and female sexual response
2 PSY 225 Psychology of Human Sexuality Page 2 patterns 4. explain and distinguish between the major stages of sexual development and expression during stages of the life cycle 5. provide examples of and assess the impact of sex role socialization on female and male sexuality 6. identify and explain the major types of sexual dysfunction along with their psychological, sociological and physiological antecedents 7. identify and explain the major types of non-traditional and atypical sexual behaviors along with their psychological and sociological causes and consequences REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Sexuality Today: The Human Perspective, Kelly Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Human Sexuality, Francoeur The reading for this course is: PRIMARILY COLLEGE LEVEL REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time: Study Answer questions Read required materials Write essays, research papers, lab reports, or journals DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSE: 2 hours of independent work done out of class per each hour of lecture or class work, or 3 hours lab, practicum, or the equivalent, per unit. Sexually transmitted diseases METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Lecture Lecture/Discussion Directed Study METHODS OF ASSESSMENT FOR DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSES: Students will be graded, at minimum, in at least one of the following categories. If "essay" is not checked, it must be explained why essays are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade in the course. ESSAY OR SUBSTANTIAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT Includes not only "blue book" examinations but any written assignment of sufficient length and complexity to require students to select and organize ideas as well as to explain them.
