CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION A course in tree care for persons working in public works or private industry: tree anatomy, physiology, pruning, cabling, identification, root structure and its effects on infrastructure, soil management and irrigation. The course is designed to prepare students to pass the Tree Worker Certification exam given by Western Chapter, International Society of Arboriculture. Three hours lecture per week. CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION Tree care for professionals desiring to pass Western Chapter ISA certification for tree worker, or other persons interested in proper tree care in the urban environment. COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
2 PUB 158 Municipal and Urban Tree Care Page 2 Computation 1. demonstrate, through oral presentation, written assignments, and examinations, the appropriate level of knowledge in the areas of tree anatomy, physiology, pruning, cabling, identification, root structure and its effect on infrastructure, soil management and irrigation to successfully pass the Tree Worker Certification Exam Creative, Critical, and Analytical Thinking 1. compare and contrast, in written assignments, the properties of the various soil types in the region and the impacts these variables have on tree selection and irrigation designs required in order to complete a successful tree planting project 2. demonstrate the ability to identify various tree maintenance issues, through oral presentation and written assignments, that require additional skill and knowledge above the ability of a tree worker, according to current industry standards Community/Global Consciousness and Responsibility 1. describe through oral presentation, written assignments, and examinations the basic procedures adopted in the WCISA pruning standards for early care of trees in an urban environment 2. recall and explain in writing the basic principles of tree anatomy and physiology including the function of leaves, roots and branches and the impacts on tree care, according to current industry standards Technology/Information Competency 1. demonstrate in writing the ability to identify 20 common tree species from a list and correctly spell the common names, as is required in the public works profession 2. list and describe, through written assignments and examinations, the proper use of various tree care equipment used in the field including chain saws, brush chippers, aerial devices, hydraulic loppers and pruners, according to current industry standards 3. describe, through oral presentation, Title 8: Article 12 of the CAL OSHA regulations pertaining to tree care and safe work practices in the field of tree
