Our aim is to work in partnership with parents, through a shared ethos and set of values, to prepare children for a successful future adult life. 4 history The foundations for King s were laid through a vision for a strong Christian school on the Gold Coast. The first class began in 1980 with 23 students in temporary premises. From that time, the school has grown steadily, so that today - with more than 1550 students - we are the largest Christian school in Australia. members of the College Board have served for many years. Their vision and goals for the school have remained consistent since our foundation. From our modest beginnings of one class on 26 acres of bushland, our students now enjoy the very latest facilities on the same campus. Our planned building program has created distinct and separate areas for child care & pre school, primary and secondary schooling while maintaining a close knit community across the school. This allows a smooth transition for students as they progress through their school life on the one campus. Dedicated facilities have been built to cater for a wide variety of curricula and co-curricular activities. These include computer laboratories, libraries, lecture theatre, music, drama, dance, and art rooms, science labs, industrial design and technology workshops plus sporting fields and courts. One of the strengths of King s is the consistency of leadership and vision we have enjoyed from our inception. 5 our PhilosoPhy We believe that the school community should be an extension of the home environment, reflecting the love and security upon which a child s development is so dependent. We see our role as forming partnerships with parents to educate their children. Within a Christian context, we aim to nourish the growth of the whole person - intellectually, physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. We believe that this growth should be firmly based on the student s growing personal relationship with God and other people. We believe growth is best achieved in a personal environment that has firm boundaries within mutual respect between parents, teachers and students. Respect involves treating other people as you would like to be treated yourself and a discipline program which aims for restoration of relationships. A high level of care is provided with the expectation that as students journey through the school, they develop self respect and self discipline. Our programs are designed to give our students the widest possible range of opportunities and experiences to achieve this goal. AcAdeMic All students are given the opportunity to develop their gifts and talents within the school environment and wider community. In the early years, considerable focus is placed on ensuring each student grasps the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy. If necessary, individual programs are created for students so that these basic building blocks of learning are well understood. As students grow in confidence and progress through the school, they are increasingly challenged and extended. One of our aims is to deliver a relevant, challenging and rewarding curriculum that stirs the imagination and develops a life-long love of learning. In the High School, a wide range of subject choices gives students the opportunity to prepare for the myriad of possibilities available to them in their adult lives. sport Sport and PE play a significant role in life at King s. Our specialist PE teachers run programs that introduce skills, as well as develop character and self discipline. King s is part of the Associated Private Schools (APS) competition. This allows students to compete against other schools in team and individual sports. 7 life at King s Arts Strength in visual and performing arts is a feature of King s. Throughout the year, students have many opportunities to display their artistic talents through art exhibitions, plays, musicals, rock eisteddfods, concerts and music or dance performances. Many of our students have won awards either as individuals or as part of larger productions. co-curricular Our extensive co-curricular program is designed to expose students to activities that they may not otherwise have access to. Each term, students select from an extensive range of activities that allow them to widen their horizons, develop new skills or extend their classroom experiences. christian living program Our mission is to Educate students in Christian leadership for tomorrow s generation. The goal of our Christian Living program is to produce students who will demonstrate Christ-like behaviour as they go about their daily lives. The program is integrated into the overall curriculum and each teacher is responsible for the formal instruction as well as imparting the spirit of the program. international students We have a multi-cultural society at King s where respect and strong, positive cross-cultural relationships are encouraged. 8 early learning PrograMs Noah s Ark Pre School and Child Care Centre is an integral part of the College, welcoming children and their families into the school community. Noah s Ark bridges the gap between home and school. In a caring Christian environment, our experienced child care staff provide a program which encourages children to be active thinkers, using their senses to make enquiries and to work towards solving problems. Adult / child interactions are based on the premise that all children need love and security, new experiences to challenge and enjoy, praise, recognition and encouragement, responsibility and choices. At Noah s Ark, we believe that the goal of effective guidance is to assist children to become confident, fully functioning individuals. A positive approach is taken as we work in partnership with families to assist children in their growth and development. Noah s Ark Pre School and Child Care Centre is the preferred point of entry into Prep. With its location on the College campus, children readily become familiar with the sights and sounds of the College. This familiarity eases the transition to Prep - the first phase of primary schooling. During the Prep year, children s learning experiences are further developed by early childhood specialist teachers, with a focus on basic literacy, numeracy, physical and social skills. Highlights of the week include specialist computer, library, music and physical education classes. 9 PriMary school The Primary School at King s is a world of discovery. We meet new friends and learn to build relationships that can last a lifetime. In a safe and encouraging environment, students discover God s world, they experiment and experience many firsts. The foundations of learning are formed and, once understood, students are challenged and inspired as they apply their new-found knowledge. Students begin to understand their unique place in God s world and develop their own special gifts while the virtues of respect, honesty and hard work are nurtured. The pastoral aspect of school life is a major component of our campus activity. Each member of staff has a commitment to the spiritual and psychological welfare of our students. A major part of our weekly chapel and Christian Living program is focused on this goal. Our academic standards are very high and gifted students are catered for in each year level. Booster groups are also offered to promote higher order thinking and to develop learning skills. A new world of cultural and physical pursuits opens up. Students are able to learn skills in dance, drama, music and art. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to showcase their developing talents both at school and external events. Physical Education and the development of sporting skills is part of the weekly program throughout their primary years. A competitive inter-school sports program, as part of the Gold Coast Associated Private Schools, is available and frequently our students achieve regional, state and sometimes national representative honours. 10 high school Life at King s is designed to help students develop their sense of identity, their faith and their personal responsibility towards others while striving for excellence in their academic studies. Academic opportunities, together with sporting, artistic and cultural pursuits form the backbone of the High School at King s. However, it is the development of a young person s character that will determine success in life. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the development of faith, strength, family values, and a sense of discovery, optimism, success and integrity. It is these elements that make the King s experience unique and produce graduates with a strong Christian character who are well prepared for adult life. Students develop and showcase their sporting talents through the Associated Private Schools (APS) competition. Often, this is a stepping stone to regional, state and sometimes national representative honours. The visual and performing arts are strengths of our College. There are many opportunities throughout the year for students to showcase their skills in dance, music, drama and the visual arts. All students are involved in the Pastoral Care program that aids their personal, spiritual and social development. 12 EarlY learning Programs Noah s Ark Pre School and Child Care Centre serves to meet the needs of the King s school community. Its location within the College grounds allows children to start and finish their education on the one campus. The Centre is owned and operated by King s Christian Education Ltd, which also operates King s Christian College. The Director is responsible for the day to day running of the Centre. Noah s Ark caters for children from two years of age, offering toddler and pre school programs. In partnership with families, we seek to engage children with the learning process, using hands on experiences suited to children s interests and needs. Families are most welcome to become involved in the daily life of the Centre, from helping with small activity groups and computer time, through to the sharing of an occupational interest or hobby. An Outside School Hours Care program operates from Noah s Ark including Before School Care and After School Care. Government fee relief is available for all Centre programs. 13 EarlY learning Programs prep Prep is the first year of full time schooling and eases the transition into the more formal setting of Year 1. Prep is available for children who turn 5 by June 30 of the year they start the program. The Prep educational program uses the Australian Curriculum to develop school based learning programs suited to the learning needs and interests of enrolled children. A unique program supports students developing social skills as well as their critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Within appropriate class sizes, Prep provides a semi-structured play based approach with hands-on activities in small work groups where the students develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills. A strong partnership is built between home and school which helps students to develop a positive disposition to learning. Students engage in specialist lessons such as PE where perceptual motor, coordination and athletics skills are developed. Library, information technology and music lessons are also part of the regular weekly program in Prep. A weekly Assembly is held in the Prep to Year 5 Resource Centre as part of our Christian Living program. Chapel is a favourite part of the week as children come together to learn about God and His love for them, through song and bible stories. Parents are welcome to join in these sessions. Our four air-conditioned Prep classrooms are well equipped with early learning materials along with computers, assisting students to develop basic computer skills. Joint activities with classes in Years 1 and 2 such as assemblies, Celebration of Early Childhood Week and sporting carnivals help to promote a seamless transition into the more formal setting of Year 1.

14 PrImarY school The early years of primary school lay the foundation for life-long learning. In Prep, through hands-on experiences, students are taught early literacy and numeracy skills; engage in fine & gross motor activities and computer sessions; and Christian values are woven into the curriculum content so that as they enter Year 1, they are ready to launch into their more formal years of schooling. Mastering literacy and numeracy skills is a major focus of the Primary School as these are the foundations of all learning. During Prep and Year 1, each student is tested by a speech specialist in order to ascertain potential issues that may affect the development of literacy skills. If necessary and in conjunction with parents, individual booster or extension programs are produced for students that cater for their unique needs. An academic extension program is offered throughout each grade level. As the student s skill level increases, they are stretched and challenged so that each child has the opportunity to achieve the highest possible standards of literacy and numeracy. The curriculum is designed to offer a core of essential learning that balances the need for explicit teaching with innovative inquiry based problem solving. A major focus across the whole school is our Christian Living program. The goal of the program is to produce students who demonstrate Christ-like character through their actions. Chapel services are often the favourite time of the week for our students. Chapel time is interactive with students involved with Chapel bands and the innovative and engaging program produced by our chaplaincy staff. 15 PrImarY school From Prep, students are progressively taught computer literacy skills. These IT skills are integrated into various learning areas such that students in the upper primary years produce web pages, newsletters, podcasts, webquests and blogs as part of the curriculum. Each Primary School class room is equipped with computers and a data projector, together with access to up-todate software, the internet and a database of digital resources. Visual and performing arts are a big part of life at King s. Music lessons from specialist teachers are part of the weekly timetable in the Primary School. Students are able to join dance groups from Prep and are able to join our instrumental music program from Year 4. During the year, there are many opportunities for students to perform in choirs, bands, dance groups, instrumental groups, eisteddfods and in the annual Primary School musical. Weekly sport and PE lessons help to develop coordination and motor skills. All students are taught basic swimming and water survival skills in Years 1-7. From Year 4, students can take part in our inter-house sports program and can compete against other schools in the Associated Private School (APS) inter-school sports program. Frequently, our students achieve regional, state and sometimes national representative honours. Participation in school camps provides many opportunities for growth. Camps begin in Year 3 with an overnight stay on the College grounds with Mum or Dad. Camps then become an annual event, with each one progressively stretching and challenging students. A highlight of a student s time at King s is the Canberra Trip in the final year of Primary School. After students complete Year 12, many talk about the Canberra Trip as being one of the defining times of their lives. On Friday afternoons in terms 1 and 3, the Primary School operates its Clubtastic program. Students are given a wide range of club activities to choose from. These activities are provided to give students the opportunity to be involved in experiences they might not otherwise have access to, or are an extension of their classroom activities.

16 HIgH school Educating students in Christian leadership for tomorrow s generation. King s has adopted the key elements of middle schooling in Years 8 and 9. Some of these include an integrated core curriculum delivered by interdisciplinary teams of teachers; as well as a range of flexible and relevant programs that are intended to challenge students. The Year 8 curriculum is designed to expose students to all of the key learning areas in order to provide a sound base for future subject selections. Students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Christian Living, History, Geography, and Physical Education all year. Other subjects are studied for part of a year and include Japanese, Supplementary Mathematics and English, Home Economics, Music, Design and Technology, Drama and Art. Students in Year 9 continue to study the core curriculum but are now able to choose a limited number of elective subjects based on their interests, abilities and career aspirations. [Information on elective subjects is available in the Year 9 Subject Selection booklet.] Year 10 is viewed as the Senior foundation year. Students commence the study of Senior subjects and are progressively introduced to the quality and quantity of work required in Year 11 as well as the expectations in regard to homework and study. In the senior phase of learning, students study English and Mathematics and four elective subjects. These are all based upon syllabi accredited by the Queensland Studies Authority. A major focus in all of the subjects is the development of advanced analytical skills, through an in-depth examination of content. 17 HIgH school Creative Arts are strengths of our College. Dedicated art rooms, dance, drama and music studios provide the ideal setting for students to learn skills and develop artistic talents. Throughout the year, students are provided with many outlets to express their talents both within the curriculum and in addition to it. These include: Easter Arts Festival, School Musicals, Chapel Band, Art Exhibitions, Rock Eisteddfod, Music Concerts, Open Day, Carnival Day, Awards Nights and Presentation Nights. King s students have a history of success when competing in visual and performing arts competitions. Sport and PE are integrated into the weekly timetable at King s. Sport is a vehicle to develop character, self-discipline and leadership. King s participates in the Associated Private School (APS) competition which allows students to compete against other Gold Coast schools in a wide range of sports. King s students are frequently selected for regional, state and sometimes national representational honours. As part of our commitment to providing a well rounded education, our co-curricular program is part of every student s schedule. Each rotation, students will select an activity from approximately 40 options. These activities cover areas such as performing arts, aspects of personal development, environmental improvement and physical activities. A full list of options is available in a separate document. The development of character is key to a person s success in life. Such is our conviction of this, that the development of our students character is woven into every aspect of school life. Our Christian Living program aims to not only help students grow in their knowledge of God, but also to develop Christ-like character traits that are demonstrated through their actions and attitudes. Many opportunities are provided for student leadership, both in formal leadership roles, and informally during every day activities. Each student in Years studies a Certificate III in Christian Ministry. A key element of this course is a practical component where students serve at their own church or for a community service organisation. Chapel Services are integral to the King s personal development program. Students participate in and sometimes run, weekly chapel services that are overseen by our chaplaincy staff. Our chaplaincy staff work with teachers to ensure that students receive excellent instruction and ongoing support of the highest quality.

As part of this partnership with home, the College offers students a range of services. pastoral care We are conscious of the significant influence a school has on each student s growth and development. However, we see ourselves in partnership with parents, deferring to them as the most important people in the life of their sons and daughters. Our pastoral care program aims to guide the development of Christian character within each child across the College. Our chaplaincy staff work with students in small groups and individually and can provide more information on the program. text books The cost of hiring textbooks required by High School students is covered by the annual consumable fee. Text books are available from our Student Services department during normal school hours. uniforms The wearing of the correct school uniform is compulsory. King s uniforms are available for purchase from the Uniform Store on campus. The Uniform Store is open on school days. It is also usually open prior to the beginning of the school year. For specific opening hours, please refer to the College website. A price list is available from the Uniform Store and a guide is available on the College web site. The Uniform Store accepts payment by cash, EFTPOS and credit card. bus service King s operates a fleet of modern school buses for the exclusive use of our students. College buses provide the convenience for busy parents and those living long distances from campus, of transporting their children to and from school each day. 19 life at KIng s More detailed information regarding the routes is available at The buses are used exclusively by King s students so that parents can be assured that safety and supervision of their children can be closely monitored. These buses also provide the added bonus of ready and inexpensive transport of our students to school excursions, performances, sporting competitions and carnivals. Bus fares are outlined on the Fee Schedule. These costs will be included on the fee statement each term. outside school hours care Two Outside School Hours Care programs are available at King s. The first is a Before School Care and After School Care program for children up to the age of 9. The second provides After School Care only, for children from Year 1 to the age of 15. Vacation Care is available during school holidays. Please contact the Early Learning Programs office ( ) for specific details regarding these programs. options for students and the latest menu is available on the College web site. clinic The school clinic is centrally located on the campus with easy access from every department. A nurse is on-site during school hours. The clinic is designed to cater for situations that arise during the school day. It is also part of the School s policy that all medication is dispensed from the clinic. Please be aware that the clinic is not intended to provide on-going treatment for medical conditions that originate outside the school. careers A full-time Career Pathways Officer is employed at the College. The Career Pathways Officer helps students make informed career decisions by educating and equipping students with relevant and current career information. canteen The College canteen is available for students during breaks in the school day. In the Primary School, canteen orders are placed at the beginning of the day and brought to the classroom. The canteen menu offers healthy

Our extensive co-curricular program broadens horizons and teaches life skills that will help lay the foundations of their lives. art King s Christian College offers students a progressive and creative experience in Visual Art. Students not only learn about the use of art materials and methods in Visual Art, they learn to develop a confidence in their own creative abilities. This creative confidence is developed by engaging students in tasks that give them an understanding of the techniques in a creative process. These techniques and experiences are guided by the teacher until Year 10. In the senior years of Visual Art, students have the opportunity to express their ability to conceive and actuate their own creative vision with the teacher taking the role of mentor. Digital Art also forms part of the curriculum. Digital Art students have access to an Apple Mac lab with the latest equipment, that will enable them to explore this modern medium through video or still images. Students are exposed to many opportunities to exhibit their work during their years at King s. There are several venues on the Gold Coast that display the work of Visual Art students as well as a range of internal opportunities in the form of exhibitions held at school. Events on the annual school calendar that allow students to display their skills in Visual Art include: Easter Arts Festival, The Senior Art Exhibition, Open Day, Awards Evenings and on display in the College library throughout the year. For students with a creative vision, Visual Art at King s is a progressive environment for them to learn about the almost limitless ways that imagination can contort and capture the world in which we live. Visual Art offers students the skills and the arena by which to expressively respond to their environment. DRama Primary School Drama opportunities are found in integrated studies, co-curricular activities, Chapel performances and musical productions. 21 co-curricular The study of Drama involves a balanced exploration of world and Australian drama, scripted and group devised plays, improvisation and polished performance and a comprehensive research of the history and current methods of theatre and performance styles. Drama encourages the development of creative, critical, imaginative and inventive thinking disciplined working the ability to work alone or in groups self-motivation being open to new experiences oral communication the ability to see things through to completion the exploration of ideas Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for public drama performances including: Easter Arts Festival, School Musicals, Rock Eisteddfod, Music Concerts, Open Days, Carnival Day, Awards Evenings, Presentation Nights and others. sport The PE program from Prep to Year 2 provides specific activities aimed at improving each student s physical development, personal health, general fitness and well-being. Activities include fundamental movement and motor skills (ie hopping, jumping), dance and rhythmic movements, game skills and perceptual motor skills. From Years 3-7, the aim is to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, improvement in individual fitness levels, the instruction of motor skills required for participation in sporting activities and the encouragement of sportsmanship and team sport participation. A wide variety of sports are included in the curriculum. Swimming, newcombeball, volleyball, running games and skills, soccer, t-ball, softball, team relays, royal life, recreational games, netball, European handball, athletics, touch football, cricket, sailing, basketball, Aussie rules, gymnastics and hockey are examples of the range of sports available to students. High School sport aims to facilitate the maturation of the individual by providing a range of experiences in both individual and team sports. Character development, self-discipline and perseverance are corner stones of our program which also aims to develop individuals who are effective community members. A wide range of sports are played in the High School including swimming, athletics, volleyball, soccer, tennis, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, basketball, touch and more. Both the Primary and High Schools participate in the Associated Private Schools (APS) competition. There are also representative teams students can trial for that have the potential to take students though to regional, state and national levels in their chosen sport.

22 co-curricular clubtastic co-curricular primary Within the Primary Clubtastic program, the children are given a wide and varied range of options including: athletics, adventure activities, boxing, sports rush, surfing, tennis, golf, ice skating, chapel band, chess, puzzle club, dance, sport activities, introductory guitar, multimedia computer group, orienteering, robotics, folk art, scrapbooking, cooking, needlework & patchwork, drums alive, drama, personal development & grooming, acrylic painting, and horse riding. The aim is to have a program that is interesting and enjoyable, providing opportunities for the children to experience activities that are either an extension of classroom experiences or those in which they will find satisfaction and success. high school As part of our commitment to providing a holistic, well-rounded and balanced education, the High School operates a cocurricular program as part of its regular weekly schedule. This program is designed to deliver a variety of exciting educational, creative and fun activities that allow students to participate in and appreciate various performing arts, aspects of personal development, environmental improvement and physical activities. Students have the opportunity to develop new interests and skills, as well as being able to undertake activities that build on current interests and skills. In some cases, students are offered the opportunity to explore a number of activities that may have been out of their reach for financial reasons or time constraints. As a result of these opportunities, students have the opportunity to grow in confidence, socially, culturally and academically. Students undertake at least two activities per year and activities include scuba diving, cooking classes, various fitness programs, surfing instruction, animal care courses, craft, golf instruction, public speaking courses, model building, Latin and ballroom dance, Bible study, rock climbing, computer courses, candle making, first aid courses, archery, hip hop dance and community service. The list is quite extensive - with approximately 40 choices offered each term for Years 8 and 9 and up to 50 choices for Years 10, 11 and 12. The activities offered change each term to account for student interests and to take advantage of newly offered opportunities. music Music is a classroom subject from Prep to Year 12. In the early years it is taught in a sequential and developmentally appropriate aural manner. Learning Music in this way has been shown to enhance mathematical as well as language abilities across the curriculum.

23 co-curricular Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to become involved in extra-curricular music: choirs and bands perform regularly for chapel and college events, participate in eisteddfods and enjoy workshops. Both the Primary and the High School regularly produce musicals and organise activities such as Battle of the Bands. All students have the opportunity for private music lessons with music tutors studying musicianship, piano, voice, guitar, wind, strings, drums and percussion. From Year 4, group lessons are available on instruments supplied by the school, and students may join a band or a string group. King s also offers Dance classes to students in Years 2 to 10 outside of school time. Dance is a challenging yet enjoyable activity for students of all ages. It encourages physical activity and fitness for life. Dance Dance is a Board subject offered to students from Year 8 to 12. It is a fun and exciting program in which students are encouraged to participate in a cooperative and supportive environment. Students are able to develop their abilities through class activities as well as through events such as school based performances and external competitions. Students are also given the opportunity to experience live theatre performances and to critically review the work of others. Three techniques are learned: Choreography - in which students create and perform their own dance work; performance - usually a teacher-devised sequence, in which students are encouraged to engage in

Discipline Discipline is useful only if it produces the fruit of responsible behaviour and the restoration of relationships We commend those who do the right thing, and set fair boundaries for behaviour. Students and parents give us the right to enforce the boundaries which have been set. Discipline is a lifelong process. The relationship between school and home is a vital part of this process and relies on open communication. Support between school and home reinforces the behaviour management programs that are devised for individual students. social Responsibility In both Primary and High School, students are made aware of their responsibility as an individual in the community and at home. Students are instilled with an awareness that the choices they make affect not only themselves but others around them. Their behaviour in class, representing the school in various teams, courtesy to visitors, even taking notes home, are part of being a responsible member of the school community. Understanding the important role the school plays in the wider community is a vital component in helping young people grow to be socially responsible. At all levels the school has supported charities such as World Vision s 40 hour famine, Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Salvation Army street appeal, selling Anzac Day badges and others. High School and Primary students have served people in aged care and those who are physically and mentally challenged through involvement with the Crossroads Ministries services. Working parties have been sent overseas as well as to Western Queensland. camps School camps begin at Year 3 with a sleepover in the College grounds. They challenge and broaden students horizons. Often, camps create some of the most memorable moments of students experiences at school. The Year 7 trip to Canberra is commonly recalled by students long after they leave school. 25 PErsonal development chaplaincy Chapel services are an integral part of the King s personal development program. Our Primary and High School Chaplains work closely with staff and teachers to ensure that our students receive excellent instruction and ongoing support of the highest quality. Students attend weekly Chapel services, enjoying messages from a variety of speakers relevant to their age and stage of spiritual growth. In addition, opportunities are provided for small group sessions eg, Seasons (grief support program); one-toone counselling and regular classroom visits including Biblical Studies lessons. Our classes begin each day with prayer and devotions, but every aspect of the curriculum is presented from a distinctly Christian worldview; instilling Godly values and attitudes that will benefit our students for a lifetime. Various mission activities give students the opportunity to practically express their faith and love for the Lord. christian living The college is proud of its Christian ethos, with students greatly benefiting from its strong pastoral emphasis. The Christian Living Program is an integrated part of the overall education curriculum at King s (Students in Years study a Certificate III in Christian Ministry.)
