5 2 PACKAGED SERVICES 2.1 ARCHITECTURAL HEALTH CHECK DESCRIPTION The Architectural Health Check (AHC) is a detailed review f the custmer s Pstgres database envirnment. Multiple Pstgres instances will require multiple AHCs 1 ; The AHC prduces a set f specific and actinable high impact recmmendatins that the custmer can implement t ensure that the system is ptimally cnfigured and tuned. Sme recmmendatins can be implemented within a shrt timeframe; thers are strategic suggestins that may take lnger t realize The AHC is based n years f Pstgres experience in high perfrmance and high availability envirnments. The AHC fcuses n the fllwing aspects: Technical Infrastructure (OS, hardware, and database) Indexes and tables Tuning parameters at the OS level and the database level (memry, WAL, backgrund wrkers, lgging, checkpint, aut vacuum, etc.) Disaster recvery planning (backups, high availability, replicatin, etc.) Best practices (table spaces, maintenance, partitining, indexing, etc.) The AHC is a highly interactive prcess that takes apprximately 40 hurs, with apprximately tw- thirds f that time being spent reviewing the custmer s Pstgres infrastructure. The remaining time is fcused n analyzing the data, and n the develpment and dcumentatin f the AHC recmmendatins. An EDB- internal peer review is cnducted prir t the delivery f the final recmmendatin DELIVERABLES The AHC prduces a detailed reprt cvering the analysis and the recmmendatins (see Figure 1 fr a sample sectin). The EDB cnsultant needs access t the custmer s DBA team and the business wner f the applicatin fr discussins, questins and answers. The EDB Cnsultant will als run custm develped and prprietary scripts n the prductin system t cllect perfrmance data, identify perfrmance prblems and develp recmmendatins. Tuning analysis is mst accurate when the system can be bserved under prductin lads r accurately simulated prductin lads, with the expected hardware prfile in place. Fr sme investigatin, administratr access is required. Depending n the initial findings, the EDB cnsultant will als need access t the IT architecture team, the IT Netwrking Team and the Applicatin Design Team t develp a cmplete set f recmmendatins. AHCs fcus n systems that are currently in prductin. Custmers wh need perfrmance evaluatins and architectural reviews fr pre- prductin systems shuld cnsider a custm cnsulting engagement. 7 2.1.4 ONSITE DELIVERY Fr nsite delivery f the AHC, the EDB cnsultant needs access t the prductin envirnment. The EDB cnsultant will be nsite fr three cnsecutive days. The remaining time will be used t develp the recmmendatins, peer review and delivery f the recmmendatins t the custmer REMOTE DELIVERY Fr remte delivery f DBA Services, the EDB cnsultant needs SSH access either directly r via VPN t the prductin envirnment. The remte access has t be in place prir t the start f the prject. Delays in the remte access will impact the cst f the prject. 2.2 RED HAT CLUSTER SUITE IMPLEMENTATION DESCRIPTION The Red Hat Cluster Suite (RHCS) implementatin prject fcuses n creating a highly available Pstgres infrastructure by creating an active/passive cluster using a shared strage. RHCS Implementatin is a prven service that creates a rbust infrastructure with very high availability. It addresses several f the mst prminent single pints f failure in a cnventinal Pstgres setup. The RHCS prject includes Hardware and O/S Cnsultancy: Advice n selecting the right hardware and sftware cmpnents Advice n the cnfiguratin f the perating system and the strage setup Database installatin and tuning Installatin f PstgreSQL r EDB Pstgres Advanced Server Cnfiguratin f tuning f Pstgres fr RHCS Cluster setup and testing Prject Flw Installatin f cluster cmpnents Cnfiguratin Test f failver and cluster switching Prir t the engagement, EDB engineers schedule a meeting with the custmers review the selected hardware and OS. 9 2.3 DATABASE MIGRATION ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION The Database Migratin Assessment (DMA) is a highly prven and very systematic assessment f an Oracle database t identify the effrt necessary t migrate it t the latest release f EDB Pstgres Advanced Server. A DMA prceeds as fllws: Discvery Review and Plan Select initial database(s) t assess - identify the best candidate database(s) fr initial migratin targets based n technical features used, gals and requirements, use case, and yur identified database inventry. This is ften dne during the pre- sales stage with the custmer. The Database Migratin Assessment Tl (DMAT) is executed against the custmer schema, and results in an in initial understanding f the relative cmpatibility between the custmer schema and the Oracle features supprted by EDB Pstgres Advanced Server. Using the DMAT, EDB perfrms a syntactical analysis f the schema t identify any bjects that may nt be supprted in EDB Pstgres Advanced Server. The bjects evaluated include Database Links, Functins, Indexes, Prcedures, Sequences, Tables, Views and Triggers. In additin t use f the DMAT, the cnsultant lks fr ther knwn issues that may nt be discvered by the autmated tl. Gather details abut the custmer applicatins that access the schema t be prted t EDB Pstgres Advanced Server. Prduce and analyze the findings in the reprt generated frm the Database Migratin Assessment Tl. Fr each bject that will nt migrate autmatically, EDB identifies if there is a knwn slutin in the EDB library currently a cllectin f ver 70 prven scripts, tls and practices. EDB and custmer discuss issues that cannt easily be revealed by autmated analysis t explre usage and ptential alternatives. Gather details abut perfrmance, uptime requirements, functinal regressin, migratin cnstraints, schedule. Flex Cnsulting prvides custmers the pprtunity t call n architecture, design and develpment expertise as needed fr a shrt- term basis. Custmers purchase a set f 1- day cnsulting blcks and they can pull n them as needed. A Senir Cnsultant/Architect is assigned t the prject and, schedule permitting - this cnsultant will fcus n the custmer s needs n a remte basis thrughut the prject. Requests t cnsume flex cnsulting days are made in advance and are scheduled accrding t availability and needs. If required, ther resurces frm EDB may als be leveraged after prir apprval frm the custmer. Flex Credit Days are designed fr shrt term needs. A minimum f 1 day and a maximum f 20 days can be purchased. Days must be cnsumed in minimum increments f 1 day. Cnsulting needs that require greater than 20 days f service will be SOW based and be defined as Cnsulting Services Engagements with specific scpe detailed in a SOW.
