4 Intrductin Dedicated Virtual Hst Services (DVHS) is a DET managed service that is a supplement t DET s current applicatin hsting, Agency Managed Applicatin Service (AMAS), AMAS-Hsted, and Agency Managed Virtual Services (AMVS) services. This service is based n tw implementatins; ne lcalized t the DET data centers and the secnd, a Dedicated Virtual Hst Services Remte (DVHS-R), fr remte sites. DVHS prvides individual agencies with the ptin t deply their applicatins and virtual guest servers n dedicated, clustered virtual hst hardware reserved fr the exclusive use f their agency. These dedicated virtual hsts are tailred t the agency s specific needs, allwing persnalized capacity management, islatin frm ther agency s wrklads, mre detailed mnitring, and greater transparency cmpared t the general purpse, shared virtual hst envirnments. DVHS-R prvides service specific t sites that require remte server hardware. It prvides individual agencies with the ability t deply their remte server applicatins (generally, File, Print and Active Directry) t either a Single Functin guest t Hst r a Multi-Functin guest t Hst architecture, thereby allwing fr mre granular administratin and greater licensing flexibility, ptential netwrk segregatin and wrklad islatin. Images can als be maintained n the remte hst allwing fr greater efficiency f image maintenance. In additin t these benefits, the rate fr this service may be mre cst-effective when cmpared t the general purpse, shared virtual hst envirnments and the dedicated remte server envirnments. It is based n the number f dedicated virtual hsts and guest servers rather than the number f virtual CPUs and memry allcatin as is the case tday in the general purpse, shared envirnments. Individual guests running in a DVHS and DVHS-R envirnment can still subscribe t ther DET service fferings, such as AMAS, but are billed differently (see Hw Services Are Charged at the end f this dcument). Billing is based n the life cycle cst f the virtual hst hardware and hst sftware rather than rates based n the allcated number f virtual CPUs and memry allcatin. The Dedicated Virtual Hst Services Remte (DVHS-R) prvides individual agencies with the ability t deply their remte server applicatins (generally, File, Print and Active Directry) t either a Single Functin guest t Hst r a Multi-Functin guest t Hst architecture, thereby allwing fr mre granular administratin f the File and Print servers, smething that is nt available with the current multi-functin physical server design. Billing is based n the life cycle f the virtual hst hardware and hst sftware. The DVHS and DVHS-R designs can accmmdate any f the DET service mdels. The DVHS and DVHS-R services d nt replace r supersede the rles and respnsibilities included in the service mdel f the guest server (AMAS, AMAS- Hsted, IIS, Websphere, SQL, etc.) Fr example, an agency may chse t migrate an existing multi-server applicatin supprted under a different service ffering and run it n their dedicated virtual hsts alng with ther agency managed applicatins currently running under the AMAS service ffering. DVHS Architecture The DVHS architecture is designed arund a three-layer sftware structure, cmbined with multiple virtual hsts, t frm a dedicated cluster f resurces. 6 Clustered virtual hsts are required t realize the benefits f virtual technlgy: Prvide guest server lad balancing and failver Perfrm live guest migratins between virtual hsts with zer dwntime, undetectable t the user. Cntinuusly and autmatically ptimize guest servers within resurce pls. Perfrm scheduled hardware maintenance withut scheduling dwntime and disrupting business peratins. Practively mve virtual machines away frm failing r underperfrming servers. The minimum cluster size is tw virtual hsts. Additinal hsts may be required depending n the specific capacity and perfrmance needs f the agency. N+1 (Need + 1) must be maintained at all times as determined by the mnthly capacity reprts. If capacity reaches 70% fr vcpu r vram, discussins will ccur between DET and the Agency t determine a curse f actin. VM allcatin changes culd be made r additinal dedicated virtual hsts culd be prcured as needed. Cnfiguratin f the hst hypervisr will be the respnsibility f DET. Again, depending n the type f service ffering the individual guest server utilizes, management and licensing f the applicatin server r ther sftware in higher layers f the technlgy stack will be the respnsibility f the agency r DET. Management f the actual applicatin cde and cmpnents is the respnsibility f the agency. DVHS-R Architecture The DVHS-R architecture is designed arund a three-layer sftware structure running n Windws 2008 Enterprise Server with either a Single Functin guest t Hst r a Multi- Functin guest t Hst architecture, thereby allwing fr mre granular administratin f the File and Print servers. This als allws fr islatin f the Active Directry server s that DET can manage the security f that applicatin withut inhibiting management f the File and Print servers. 7 The Dedicated Virtual Hst Services relieves agencies f the cncern fr management f hardware, warranty, and assciated infrastructure required t supprt the hsted server systems; it becmes the respnsibility f DET in the management f the Virtual Infrastructure (VI) built t supprt the hsted guest server systems. DET is prviding a VI fr the hsting f virtual servers. Benefits f the VI: Lwer perating system licensing csts Fr example, Micrsft Windws Server Datacenter editin allws a custmer t run an unlimited number f virtual servers n a physical server that has a Datacenter license. Ptentially lwer licensing csts fr server clients and applicatins Sftware vendrs that license prducts may license at the hardware level instead f the VM level (e.g., Tivli Strage Manager). Hwever, DET encurages agencies t verify the prduct licensing impact f utilizing virtual servers fr a specific piece f sftware prir t utilizing this service ffering. Business Cntinuity Business Cntinuity is the respnsibility f the requesting agency. Hwever, DET can wrk with an agency t prvide additinal disaster recvery capabilities (Example: VMware Site Recvery Manager) within a dedicated virtual hst infrastructure utilizing additinal technlgies that are nt a part f the standard service ffering. Mnitring Delegated near real-time perfrmance view f hst hypervisr and guest virtual server fr CPU, Memry, Strage, and Netwrk resurces. Additinal mnitring may be prvided by the subscribed service ffering f the virtual guest. Hw Services Are Charged The DVHS services are billed mnthly based n each dedicated hst requested and each prvisined guest, at a flat rate. Guests subscribed t applicatin based services (Websphere, IIS, AMAS, SQL DB, etc) are additinally billed in accrdance with that service.
