1 MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH SCHOLARS PROGRAM (MERSP) September 2014-September 2015 Course Director Program Coordinator Jason Booza, PhD Sharon Taylor (313) Program Description Society places a large emphasis on education, yet understanding the basic science of teaching and learning is neglected. That is, research exploring the effectiveness of curriculum, teaching, and learning strategies on student outcomes, has not been a priority in medical education. To train students and residents for the practice of medicine in the 21st century, we must continue to be innovative in our curriculum and teaching, stay current with new technology and be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of our programs through the practice of medical education research. To address this issue the Wayne State University School of Medicine has developed a Medical Education Research Scholars Program (MERSP). The purpose of this program is to enhance the expertise of faculty in the area of medical education research and improve the science of teaching, learning and evaluation at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Program Objectives 1. Develop knowledge and skills in the principles of medical education research. Scholars will acquire the knowledge, skills, and learn processes associated with medical education research, including methods to evaluate the education literature, qualitative and quantitative methods, statistics, survey development, data management and program evaluation strategies. 2. Develop the knowledge and skills in the area educational theory to enhance teaching and student learning. Scholars will learn the underlying methods of educational theory, including theories of learning, teaching, and psychometric principals.
2 3. Strengthen academic leadership in medical education research at the medical school Scholars will gain insight into techniques which can enhance personal skills in providing leadership in medical education research for their department and the medical school. 4. Advance the medical education research agenda of the medical school administration, basic science and clinical departments. Scholars will be responsible for completing a medical education research project. The project will be conducted in conjunction with a member of the Education Research Leadership Committee and focus on the Scholars career goals in medical education, as well as the needs of the medical school or associated department. ==================================================================== Program Requirements Attendance Each seminar will be interactive and assist you on many of the steps necessary to develop your education research project; therefore it is an expectation that Scholars will attend ALL seminars. If you are unable to attend, please contact Jason Booza. Projects 1. All Scholars must develop a medical education research project. Specific components of the project that are expected to be completed during MERSP include: o Development of a research question/hypothesis o Literature review o Methodological design o Data collection 2. All Scholars must submit the above mentioned research components to Jason Booza. Detailed explanations of deliverables will be provided during seminars. 3. All Scholars must obtain HIC approval. 4. All Scholars are expected to complete their research project and present it to the Academic & Student Programs Journal Club. Seminar Activities 1. Small group lecture on medical education research topics. 2. Small group interactive sessions to enhance small group lectures. 3. Individual and small group work to develop education research projects. 2
