1 SECTION COMPRESSED-AIR EQUIPMENT FOR LABORATORY AND HEALTHCARE PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Packaged, oilless scroll air compressors. 1.2 DEFINITIONS A. Actual Air: Air delivered at air-compressor outlet. Flow rate is compressed air delivered and measured in acfm (actual L/s). B. Laboratory Air Equipment: Compressed-air equipment and accessories for nonmedical laboratory facilities. C. Low Voltage: As defined in NFPA 70 for circuits and equipment operating at less than 50 V or for remote-control, signaling power-limited circuits. D. Standard Air: Free air at 68 deg F (20 deg C) and 1 atmosphere (29.92 in. Hg) before compression or expansion and measured in scfm (standard L/s). 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include rated capacities, operating characteristics, electrical characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories. 1. Wiring Diagrams: For power, signal, and control wiring. B. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer and testing agency. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: 1. Laboratory Air System Equipment for Nonmedical Laboratory Facilities: An employer of workers trained and approved by manufacturer. B. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent testing agency, with the experience and capability to conduct the compressed-air equipment testing indicated, that is a member of the Medical Gas Professional Healthcare Organization or is an NRTL and that is acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction

2 1. Qualify testing personnel according to ASSE 6020 for inspectors and ASSE 6030 for verifiers. C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. D. ASME Compliance: Fabricate and label receivers to comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. 1.5 COORDINATION A. Coordinate sizes and locations of concrete bases with equipment provided. 1.6 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Air-Compressor, Inlet-Air Filter Elements: Equal to percent of amount installed. 2. Belts: Two for each belt-driven compressor. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 OILLESS, SCROLL AIR COMPRESSORS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following: 1. Allied Healthcare Products, Inc.; Chemetron Div. 2. BeaconMedaes. 3. Powerex, Inc. 4. Squire-Cogswell/Aeros Instruments, Inc. B. Description: Packaged unit, factory-assembled, -wired, -piped, and tested; electric-motordriven; air-cooled; continuous-duty air compressors and receivers that deliver air of quality equal to intake air. C. The control system is NEMA 12 and UL labeled. Provide in the control system: 1. Automatic lead/lag sequencing and alternation. 2. Circuit breaker disconnects for each compressor internal to the main control cabinet and protected by the safety interlock of that cabinet. 3. Full voltage motor starters with overload protection. 4. Redundant 120 Volt control circuit transformers 5. Phase reversal protection. 6. Visual and audible reserve unit alarm with isolated contacts for remote alarm and cancelable audio. 7. HOA lighted selector switches 8. Panel mounted pressure gauge

3 9. Runtime hourmeters for each compressor. 10. When HOA switches are in Hand mode, system will operate on pressure switch and compressors will not run if lead switch is satisfied. 11. Provide visual and audible alarm indication for high discharge air temperature shutdown with isolated contacts for remote alarm. 12. A temperature sensor is provided at the outlet of each compressor head to provide hitemp alarm and shutdown that compressor. Systems employing a single switch are not acceptable. 13. Compressor motors shall be a NEMA rated, open drip proof unit with 1.15 service factor suitable for 208 or 230/460 volt. 14. All moving parts (fans, pulleys and belts) shall be fully protected by a OSHA approved enclosure. 15. All support structures shall be a minimum of 10 Gauge Steel. 16. The compressor modules and motors shall be fully isolated from the main compressor base by means of a four point, heavy-duty isolation system for a minimum of 95% isolation efficiency. Engineering data shall be provided supporting isolation efficacy and equal weight distribution between supports. Pumps not having this feature shall have a inertia base sized for that system installed at this contractors expense. D. Provide redundant medical air treatment systems including desiccant dryers, filters, and purifiers sized for peak calculated demand. Include dew point and carbon monoxide monitoring Medical air treatment shall include: 1. See schedule for dryer package 2. All piping shall be factory complete including all valves per NFPA 99. E. System piping shall be brazed except where unions are required for service. Vibration flexes shall be all metal and of sufficient length to achieve full isolation. Systems using rubber tubing flex connectors with hose clamps are not acceptable. F. Provide a corrosion resistant, ASME Coded, National Board Certified, receiver rated for a minimum 150 PSIG design pressure. Include a liquid level glass, safety relief valve, manual drain valve, and a screened automatic solenoid valve. During normal operation the flow of air will travel through the tank to allow water to condense in tank. G. The complete medical air package shall be pre-wired, pre-piped and assembled on one common base with single point connections for electrical, intake air, discharge air, and condensate drains. All elements shall be factory installed including source valve. See drawings for details. H. The compressors shall be an continuous duty rated scroll type with sealed bearings. The design shall be single stage, air-cooled, consisting of one fixed and one orbiting scroll sealed with PTFE tip seals between the scroll halves and rated for 828 kpa (120 PSIG) discharge pressure. Orbiting bearings shall be grease filled and permanently sealed type requiring no lubrication at any time. Units requiring relubrication are not acceptable. Noise level shall not exceed 75 db(a) for duplex system with pumps running at peak demand. Belt tensioning shall be achieved with a pivoting motor mounting base adjustable with one tensioning screw. Each compressor shall be equipped with a integral air-cooled after cooler designed for a maximum approach temperature of 7 C (15 F) at 37.8 C (100 F) and complete with automatic drain valve. The discharge of piping of each compressor shall incorporate an integral valve to provide load-less starting and shall prevent less than 1/4 revolution of reverse rotation of the scroll at shutdown

4 I. Air Compressor(s): Two-stage, oilless (nonlubricated), scroll type, with sealed oil-free bearings, that will deliver air of quality equal to intake air. J. Capacities and Characteristics: 1. Compressed-Air Service: Medical laboratory air. 2. Air Compressor(s): Two. 3. Discharge-Air Pressure: 125 psig (860 kpa). 4. Mounting: Freestanding. 5. Motor (Each Air Compressor): 6. Receiver: ASME construction steel tank. a. Orientation: Horizontal arrangement. b. Pressure Rating: 150 psig (1035 kpa) minimum. c. Drain: Automatic valve. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Clean compressed-air equipment, accessories, and components that have not been cleaned for oxygen service and sealed or that are furnished unsuitable for laboratory air and medical air applications, according to CGA G-4.1, "Cleaning Equipment for Oxygen Service." 3.2 COMPRESSED-AIR EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION A. General Requirements for Compressed-Air Equipment Installation: 1. Install compressed-air equipment to allow maximum headroom unless specific mounting heights are indicated. 2. Install equipment level and plumb, parallel and perpendicular to other building systems and components in exposed interior spaces unless otherwise indicated. 3. Install mechanical equipment to facilitate service, maintenance, and repair or replacement of components. Connect equipment for ease of disconnecting, with minimum interference to other installations. Extend grease fittings to accessible locations. 4. Install equipment to allow right of way for piping installed at required slope. 5. Install the following devices on compressed-air equipment: a. Thermometer, Pressure Gage, and Safety Valve: Install on each compressed-air receiver. b. Pressure Regulators: Install downstream from air compressors, dryers, purification units, and filter assemblies. c. Drain Valves: Install on aftercoolers, receivers, and dryers. Discharge condensate over nearest floor drain. B. Nonmedical Laboratory Compressed-Air Equipment Installation: 1. Install compressed-air equipment, except wall-mounting equipment, on concrete bases. Install units anchored to substrate in locations indicated. Maintain manufacturers'

5 recommended clearances. Orient equipment so controls and devices are accessible for servicing. a. Anchor equipment to concrete bases according to manufacturer's written instructions. 1) For supported equipment, install epoxy-coated anchor bolts that extend through concrete base and anchor into structural concrete floor. 2) Place and secure anchorage devices. Use setting drawings, templates, diagrams, instructions, and directions furnished with items to be embedded. 3) Install anchor bolts to elevations required for proper attachment to supported equipment. 3.3 CONNECTIONS A. Comply with requirements for compressed-air piping specified in Division 22 Section "Compressed-Air Piping for Laboratory and Healthcare Facilities." Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties. B. Install piping adjacent to equipment to allow service and maintenance. C. Connect compressed-air piping to compressed-air equipment, accessories, and specialties with shutoff valve and union or flanged connection. 3.4 IDENTIFICATION A. Identify nonmedical laboratory compressed-air equipment system components. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Division 22 Section "Identification for Plumbing Piping and Equipment." 3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL FOR COMPRESSED-AIR EQUIPMENT A. Perform tests and inspections. 1. Manufacturer's Field Service: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to inspect components, assemblies, and equipment installations, including connections, and to assist in testing. B. Tests and Inspections: 1. Compressed-Air Equipment Testing Coordination: Perform tests, inspections, verifications, and certification of compressed-air equipment concurrently with tests, inspections, and certification of vacuum equipment, vacuum piping, compressed-air piping, and gas piping systems. 2. Preparation: Perform compressed-air equipment tests according to requirements in NFPA 99 for the following: a. Air-quality purity test. b. System operation test

6 3. Equipment Verification: Comply with requirements in ASSE 6020, ASSE 6030, and NFPA 99 for verification of medical compressed-air equipment. 4. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and equipment. 5. Testing Certification: Certify that specified tests, inspections, and procedures have been performed and certify report results. Include the following: a. Inspections performed. b. Procedures, materials, and gases used. c. Test methods used. d. Results of tests. C. Components will be considered defective if they do not pass tests and inspections. D. Prepare test and inspection reports. 3.6 STARTUP SERVICE A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to perform startup service. 1. Complete installation and startup checks according to manufacturer's written instructions. 2. Check for lubricating oil in lubricated-type equipment. 3. Check belt drives for proper tension. 4. Verify that air-compressor inlet filters and piping are clear. 5. Check for equipment vibration-control supports and flexible pipe connectors and verify that equipment is properly attached to substrate. 6. Check safety valves for correct settings. Ensure that settings are higher than aircompressor discharge pressure but not higher than rating of system components. 7. Drain receiver tanks. 8. Operational Test: After electrical circuitry has been energized, start units to confirm proper motor rotation and unit operation. 9. Test and adjust controls and safeties. 3.7 DEMONSTRATION A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain air compressors. END OF SECTION
