4 BREATHEASY APP The BreathEasy app is an application on your smartphone that helps you track your asthma condition, as well as inform you doctor of your asthma condition. Mainly, the app asks you daily questions about your asthma symptoms, things that may trigger your asthma, physical activity, your rescue medication intake, your controller medication intake (if you have been prescribed controller medication), your peakflow readings, and other related information that influences your asthma. 4.1 Using the BreathEasy app For the BreathEasy study you are participating in, you are required to use the BreathEasy app on a daily basis. If you are unable to complete the questionnaire on a particular day, you will have the option to complete that day s questionnaire the following day. However, you will not be able to complete a questionnaire for two days before, three days before, or older. The rest of this user guide will highlight a few items that will help you understand how you will be using the BreathEasy app. We will begin by launching the app. 4.2 Launching the BreathEasy app/app main menu To launch the BreathEasy app you must click on the BreathEasy icon: It should be located on your smartphone desktop. Clicking on this icon should launch the BreathEasy app main menu page. Figure 4 displays the BreathEasy main menu page that you should see, with important menu items
Figure 4 The items listed on the BreathEasy main menu page are as follows: 1. Enter daily data This is the daily questionnaire that you are required to fill in on a daily basis. 2. Enter rescue medication usage This is where records of your rescue medication intake can be recorded throughout the day. 3. Enter peakflow meter readings This is where your peakflow readings can be recorded throughout the day. 4. Review partial unsent data- This is where you can see records of any data that was not sent to the BreathEasy database for your doctor to see. 5. Your BreathEasy chart This is where the data you enter can be viewed on a chart. This is the same chart that your doctor will be looking at, so it presents your data in a way your doctor will understand. For instructions on how to read your chart see Section
4.3 Entering daily data/completing the daily questionnaire The daily questionnaire is expected to be completed towards the end of your day, and will include questions related to your asthma in the following areas: 1. Peakflow What your last peakflow reading was that day. You will also be able to enter multiple peakflow readings using the main menu item Enter Peakflow meter readings highlighted in Section 4.2 and explained further in Section Controller medication If you are on controller medication, whether you took your controller medication that day, and if you didn t, why. 3. Rescue medication Whether you had to take your rescue medication at any time during the day and why. You will be able to enter multiple records of rescue medication intake for one day using the BreathEasy main menu item Enter rescue medication usage highlighted in Section Asthma triggers Whether you came across any asthma triggers that day, and what those triggers were. 5. Asthma symptoms Whether you experienced any asthma symptoms and what those symptoms were. 6. Activity How active you were throughout the day. 7. Depression What mood you were in for most of the day. 8. Anxiety- How anxious you may have felt for most of the day. 9. Sleep How you have been sleeping the past 24 hours. 10. Smoking- Whether you smoked that day and how many cigarettes/cigars/etc. you remember smoking through the day
Most of the questions have answer options you can choose from and therefore do not require much typing. For example, Figure 5 displays your daily controller medication question which you will answer by just clicking on the circles next to one of the answer options. Figure 5 Figure 6 displays your daily trigger question that will ask you which triggers you came across that day. You will answer by just clicking on the checkboxes next to all the triggers you came across. Figure
There are only a few questions that you will be required to respond to by typing such as those that ask you to enter your peakflow reading. Section 4.4 explains how to you use the smartphone keyboard to type responses. 4.4 Using the smartphone keyboard to answer questions The touchscreen keyboard on your smartphone will pop-up whenever you click on a space that requires you to enter text. Figure 7 shows an example of the number keypad that will show-up when you need to enter a peakflow number value. Figure 7 Figure 8 shows an example of the text keypad that will show-up when you need to enter text in a questionnaire text field. Figure 8 You can see that in the bottom left corner of the text keypad you can choose to switch to a number and symbol keypad by clicking on this key:
Using the smartphone keyboard: Step 1: Navigate to the Google search engine on your smartphone desktop. Step 2: Click in the textbox to type. Your text keypad should come up. Step 2: Type Richmond. You should now see a page on Richmond that Google has pulled up. 4.5 Exiting before completing the BreathEasy questionnaire When you are completing your BreathEasy daily questionnaire we encourage you to complete it fully. If for any reason you need to stop in the middle of the questionnaire you can click your smartphone back button which will take you to a set of menu options shown in Figure 9, below, that allow you to save and exit (Save Data And Exit), exit without saving (Discard Changes And Exit), or just don t exit and complete the questionnaire (Do Not Exit). If you save and exit you can access your data and finish your questionnaire by accessing your incomplete questionnaire through the Review partial unsent data BreathEasy main menu item highlighted in Section 4.2. Figure
5 TAKING AND RECORDING YOUR PEAKFLOW You will receive a peakflow meter at training and your instructor will train you on how to use your peakflow meter accurately. You will be entering peakflow on a daily basis when you are completing your daily questionnaire, and you can record as many peakflow readings as you want using the main menu item Enter Peakflow meter readings highlighted in Section 4.2. Some tips: (1) The best time to check you peak flow is in the morning when you get up. You can check it again at anytime later in the day if you notice symptoms. (2) Check your peakflow while standing. (3) Check the readings 2 or 3 times. Reset the meter between readings. (4) If you cough during a measurement, reset the meter and don t count that reading
6 SENDING DATA TO THE BREATHEASY DATABASE 6.1 Successfully sending your data At the end of your questionnaire you will send your data by clicking on the Save Data and Exit button shown in Figure 10 below. Taking this action will send your responses to a BreathEasy database that will display your responses on a chart for your doctor to see to help you manage your asthma. Figure 10 If your data is sent successfully you will see the screen in Figure 11. This screen also allows you to stop the transmission of your data to the BreathEasy database. Figure
6.2 Unsent data Any data that does not successfully save to the BreathEasy database will be stored on your smartphone. You can view a record of data that has not been sent to BreathEasy by clicking on the Review partial unsent data on the BreathEasy main menu item highlighted in Section 4.2. Figure 12 below shows you what you would see if data was not sent. You would see the Breatheasy Data record title along with the date and time the data was saved, but not sent. Clicking the records will allow you to complete all incomplete questionnaires and send the data. Please take note that you are only allowed to send data that is at most a day old. You will not be able to send data that is more than a day old. Figure
7 BREATHEASY MESSAGING From time to time BreathEasy will send you text messages to: remind you to fill in your daily questionnaire. share helpful information about managing your asthma and general health. alert you of any risky conditions related to your peakflow, rescue medication use, etc. share other health promotion and wellness information. 7.1 Opt-out of optional messaging You can choose to stop receiving some of the optional messages by accessing your BreathEasy app server preferences and clearing the checkboxes next to the various message types. Figure 13 displays the server preference page that will appear to allow you to opt-out of certain optional messaging types. Figure
7.2 Daily questionnaire reminder You can choose when to receive your daily reminder for completing your daily questionnaire by accessing your BreathEasy app server preferences and setting your launch time preferences. Currently your reminder is set to 8:00pm. Figure 14 displays the launch time preference field that you would use to set the time for your daily questionnaire reminder. Figure 14 Setting your daily questionnaire reminder: Step 1: Press the menu button while you are in the BreathEasy app menu. A server preferences tab should pop-up at the bottom of your smartphone screen. Step 2: Click the server preferences tab. Step 3: Click on Launch Time. Step 4: Enter your preferred reminder time using the military hour format e.g. 8:00pm in military time is 20:00 and 8:00am in military time is 8:
8 UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHART To view your data on a chart, click on Your BreathEasy Chart on the BreathEasy main menu page. The chart displays a summary of your daily data using symbols in a way that your doctor can understand your asthma conditions. You chart should look like that in Figure 15. Figure 15 The symbols on your chart can be understood using the chart legend in Figure 16 below. Figure
An explanation of the symbols is as follows: 1. No data is represented by a blank on the chart. It means you did not enter data for that day. 2.
